DETOX, chess has a lot to do with emotions. Kasparov can't beat a computer (btw, come on Asaf, that was not a computer that was a freak of silicon-nature, but whatever) because he can't play with a computer's emotions (go and look up for yourself how Kasparov crushed Karpov - that wasn't chess man, that was psychology). And btw, Blue-whatever had a LOT of human help in beating Kasparov.

On to the DJ thing: it's all about emotion. It's so much more than just beat-matching and track-selection...
It's about reading the crowd, sensing their feelings and emotions, and through music, being a conduit of these emotions, reshaping them, taking them somewhere else, or just toying around.
It's about a journey, mind and body of a whole big bunch of people, so that, with help of music (be it psychedelic, or whatever), you achieve some place...
and excuse me, but no C routine can achieve that. Beat-matching, track-selection, very much yes. Emotional journeys (on a consistent, not random basis): no.

ah, and I've heard of ppl DJing using iPods (non-psy though).

Have you seen Cats and Dogs movie?

There is a scene where the big bad white cat insults all the people in its masters factory, fires them all and then says Cats Rulez.

Well in our case People Rulez           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

Guys, you totally underestimate a powerful set with mathematical precission and good planning, with a decent reaction to the crowd and excelent technique.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

assaf, feelings isn't math. you can't quantify it and measure it and react accordingly.           "We Do Not Allways See Things As They Are. We See Things As We Are" -Ancient Chinese Proverb

quite.. you could maybe program some random routine to mimic emotions, but you would only ever be doing just that (imitating). but we are getting to the fundamental questions about artificial intelligence right? just because a computer is indistinguishible from a human, does not make it human. but if no one can tell, then i guess who cares.. i just know that, luddite that i undoubtabley am, i would like to see a dj up there strutting his stuff rather than just a server. anyway, by way of analogy, a computer could easily be programmed to produce jackson pollocks - but that wouldn't make'em have any artistic merit, because the artistic process is more than just the end product, and this is true also to an extent with djing. (though i think it is a mistake to think that djing is 'really' an art for per se)           >>love will tear us apart...<<

Very much what I wanted to say!

And Jason got the point.
Emotions can't be coded (and plz, no '20 years from now' because really, it's not about sheer computing power - AI hasn't evolved much since its inception 40/50 years ago, and lack of funding and/or computing power hasn't kept it from it, neither has lack of human skill).

Bom!
