Hello there psymates!

I was wondering if all these people who consider himself as a mind expanded person have in common the same concept of being mind expanded or not.

So these are the questions:

- What do you personally think or how would you define a mind-expanded person?

- What do you think is the difference between being mind expanded or not?

- What factors contribute for getting a mind-expanded "mind" ?

- Is it related to the music, maybe for experiences you realise in live, maybe psychedelic drugs, maybe a mix of many things?

Let's all check if we have the same concept of mind expanding, I know maybe it is hard to explain or reply the questions but I'm curious about this topic and I would like people help me understand better this concept. So please waste a bit of your energy on your replies, thank you

(sorry if it was posted before but I could not find it)

An 'expanded mind' is usually what someone uses to define himself as better than others. I think that the most it gives to people is a finer appreciation of aesthetic qualities, but definately not much in way of making people smarter or more creative. Sometimes psychedelics help bring out these things, but when they do, I'm a firm believer that what they bring out was already there.

If someone can explain to me what's the difference between an 'expanded' and a 'normal' mind, when NOT under the influence of anything (because then there is no place to compare).           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Nice point of view, I agree almost with all.
But I think that an 'expanded mind' isn't what someone uses to define himself as better than others. I think an 'expanded mind' knows the real values of life and gives importance to those things maybe less material. I think an 'expanded mind' knows also the 'greatness the world, life, the universe in general terms', I mean, it has less limitations than a non expanded one.

Don't know if you get my point or if I explain well, but I hope to listen more opinions.

PS: please delete my second post it was erroneous, thank you.

Expanded mind? Hmm, never heard of that. I think the next stage after the mind is -no mind-. It is the mind that fucks up everything in this world!

A little zen story:
here was a man who was full of fears and worries every day. He was afraid that the sky might collapse and crush him, or worried that the moon might fall and collide with the earth. Even when he was sleeping, he had nightmares about falling sun and stars crushing his house and killing him.

In this way he lived in insecurity every moment. While he was eating, he was worried that there might be a lot of toxin and bacterium in the food.
Wherever he went, he was worried that there might be ghosts wanting to enter his body.

Therefore, he got consultation with many priests, astrologists, psychologists and psychiatrists. Then, he got a conclusion: all these experts had the same fears and worries as he did: that's why they had done a lot of study in order to get rid of fears and became professionals. Deep inside of their minds, they were still carrying the same fear-next moment, maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, something might happen to them and take away their lives. These experts were also full of fears and worries for the future.
And then, one day one man came to this person full of fears and worries, saying that got a treasure of heritage. It was very mysterious and magical. If anyone put on this round-shape of sacred treasure, the falling sun or moon, even the falling sky would not do any harm to him, not to mention toxin, bacterium or ghosts. Of course, those who did not wear this treasure would not be able to escape from all this disasters or sickness of the death of life and soul. So this man of fears and worries paid millions worth of gold for this sacred treasure.
But he died the next day, because that night he was so scared of loosing this sacred treasure that he swallowed it down and suffocated himself.
There was another person with the same fears and worries. Yet he got a different and new information about the solution for his fears and worries. He was told that far a way in the east there was a kind of person able to make him enlightened. And after enlightenment he would be able to go beyond every thing, and he would become immortal as well. Just by following such a person, trusting him, all this fears and worries will disappear forever. By staying with him he would be able to live under the protection of heavenly glory, feeling safe and peaceful.

So this information and expectation became a new concept and new hope in his mind.
And this man with such a mind kept following that person who was selling the product of enlightenment. He kept staying around him, expecting, hoping and begging. He paid his money, time and youth for years just to depend on this person. In this way the term 'enlightenment' took over his life and his way of leaving.
With such an investment on the dream of enlightenment, 10 years, 20 years, 30 years passed by, and he already forgot him self. He was getting old and sick, going to die soon. Yet the sky, the stars and the sun never fell down to crush him and the ghost didn't come and the enlightenment didn't happen either.

Only the feeling of insecurity, the fears and worries were still following him, gradually suffocating and crushing him in his life.

well, usually expanded-mind is a very fancy term that the people use in front of other people to get laid, this is a problem in the trance scene coz everybody is using the same speech. So now many people is spiritual as well...so being an spiritual&openminded person is a very good thing if you're trying to get a shag.
Highly recommended

that to me mean and old person!

a babe have a unexpanded mind (not much to remeber, etc...), but he will still jump up and down as a dinamite until he does not get his mind expanded

the older person already expanded his mind so much that he is bored of mind expanded so he will try to forget about this and enjoy his time with the not so expanded mind ones

yogies practice meditation to expand their minds they merge with the all universe and at the last altered state after deep concetrating to the supreme...clean pure conciousness liberation of the spirit.Something like god, when the mind expands could be anything ,be anywhere, realisation for the reality of existence ,not mystic knowledge because mind is not able to understand the one the union.Sounds in trance parties is like hearing our own minds expanded psychedelic

a person / mind is formed by the experiences that person has been through... how 'expanded' someone is would depend on the range of experience, and movement on the planet (an further possibly) they have had through time. like buddhists would say... in order to reach the middle path (the place where a mind is open and expanded to everything) is by trying as many things on both sides / both extremes of the path.           www.facebook.com/DjJanux

the initial concept is not about ´expanded mind´... it´s about ´expanded consciousness´...

now, expanded, as a dualistic adjective, needs to be in comparison with something (in this case, contracted, or non-expanded, or whatever.. just as good needs to compare with bad, or light needs to compare with dark)..

now, there are basically 2 ways of comparing.. with oneself´s previous state, or with someone else...

The problem with comparing with someone else is that consciousness is not a very easy thing to grasp, not like normal ´physical´ things that you can count and mark and properly establish.. It is more subtle.. How would you compare with someone else, since one might have more consciousness of one thing, but less of another..

So we return to comparing with one´s previous state.. and that´s where I think it gets interesting.. To have an expanded consciousness, is to incorporate in the light of consciousness something that was hidden in the unconscious... That does not mean ´learning´ something like you just learned a new maths formula... This means something that you had hidden down in you, a trauma, an unnoticed prejudice or hate against someone or some group, some problem with yourself that you did not accept..

When you see that (which can be multiplied when using psychedelics with certain ´set and settings´), your mind becomes aware.. You see your Shadow (as Jung defined), some part that was ignored, some problem, and from that point on you will try to resolve this unresolved question, taking out consequently small somatized body muscular tensions you previously had, increasing your health not only in a mental way, but in a body way too (they are not really separate anyway.. They are, but they are not hehe)..

So that´s what an expanded mind is.. in comparison to what you were before, not with what someone else is...

but yeah, in general this concept involves a lot of ego fights, fighting for social territory (´I am better than you because I have an expanded mind´), when an expanded mind should exactly realise these blind games we normally play, and start being more conscious about all sorts of things..

very nicely said, sherlockalien

(imo) mind expansion

-is closely connected to wisdom and
-(mental, not economic!) liberalism
-effects deep and lasting (!) insight into the principles of causality (karma)
-makes you deeply understand that your construct of reality and truth is only one among billions and therefore you inescapably need the others to create this "reality"
-enables you to let go
-rises your awareness of (and living accordingly) the fact that everything that happens is a result of former series of acts and thoughts (and therefore must be as it is)
-strengthens your meditative skills
-rises tolerance
-reveals your compassion towards all beings

the "social fights" several of you mentioned is the extreme opposite of mind/ consciousness expansion. they are an indicator for closed mindedness (being trapped in the illusion of oneself)
