I feel the guitar thing has been waaaaaaay overdone. When I first started listening to SUN Project, I thought it was a novel idea to include some old buttrock style guitar riffs in the tracks. I even liked some of Skazi's guitar tracks on the Storm album. But to me it seems that everyone used a very limited set of riffs in their stuff and suddenly, its like your watching some bad 80's hair band ressurecting themselves in the trance scene. I love Tim Schuldt's work and think that he at least attempted to use his guitar differently in most of his work. I love any guitar work that doesn't sound like guitar. I am not the biggest fan of most classical and acoustic guitar, so the more melodic stuff that has that style guitar isn't my particular cup of tea.
I've seen how crazy the crowd goes when an electric guitar is used in a track and I can't deny it's crowd pleasing ability... (See a particular Chappelle show episode for my perspective) However, sometimes things are done way to death and should be left in the grave.
Dark Soho.... wow those guys were indeed awesome for their innovation and their ability to tell an emotional story with their music. Their guitar tracks always stood out as being more than some old van halen riff updated with some psychedelic sounds, but for me the mood of their music told a better story than the guitars. A very gothic feel, and right up my alley.
So for me, I feel we should move on in relation to the fad of guitars in psytrance and find some other sounds that can be used.
On a slightly different note, Horns. Saxophone, trumpet, trombone, you know.... I think they can be done really well, and it can stand out in a track. I haven't heard very many tracks that feature horns in them, but there are a couple that stand out in my mind...
Penta - Come in (short little horn stabs, but very effective... The first time I heard it I jumped out of my chair saying... That's a saxophone!!!)
Also there is a track by I believe Frozen Ghost and the track is sooo funky with that little horn riff he's got going there... It always brings a smile to my face.
But I can see how horns can be overdone or done improperly... (I have tried a couple of times to put horns into one of my songs and it never worked.)
Basically, 1. If the producer can make it sound less like a guitar, then it's alright...

Always! you can feel the vibes from the guitar, when the adrenaline rushes throught your vains, its just the best feeling you can get!
In my opinion electric guitars on trance is just another dimention...

A few weeks ago, I had a chance to see Mindelight's live act which featured a live guitar. I must say that I enjoyed it very much.
Psycraft uses guitars as well and I enjoy there music.
So, for me it really depends. I am not a huge fan of guitars, but if used wisely, it could sound nice.

Guitars may be good. But as a rule: the less the better. And please don´t use only one easy and overused riff like Alien Project - groovy.
I like Infected Mushroom - Blue Muppet.
In short: don´t use guitars.
Respect!

being that I am a guitar player, and I've also recorded a couple of tracks with guitars, I must say this is entirely about taste. one can love guitar heavy trance, one can hate it. "We Do Not Allways See Things As They Are. We See Things As We Are" -Ancient Chinese Proverb

I couldn't agree more. It CAN work if it's done orginally. And keep it to a minimum because it loses it's impact if it's overdone. Sometimes DJ's play 80% guitar tracks and it just gets boring after a while.

Well, yep a lot of artists wanted to sound cool adding guitars to their tracks (Skazi...), it became very "trendy" that's why i think there are eventually a few tracks who use guitar riffs right in their track...if you wanna hear a perfect use of the guitar, listen to SAIKO-POD - SILENT RUNNING, here a track with "useful" guitars and not to sound cool
