Ok.....the hub i use has been in constant operation in my studio and when out traveling for about 2 years. No hiccups whatsoever. It´s a D-link 4 port powered hub (also comes in an 8 port version)

It is true that only one port on a macbook is a "true" usb port in that it does not share with any of the internal stuff that runs on usb (mouse pad, keyboard, bluetooth etc.) the other one is a somewhat handicapped one compared and will in most cases not even carry the full power specified by usb. The fun continues when using finicky hardware that pushes usb to it´s limits (multichannel soundcards, Virus TI and such) Such hardware will almost always require direct connection to your computer and not run through even a good hub. Firewire was made for streaming media data so it makes sense to use that port instead when it´s there anyway. Additionally i´d like to point out that all the newly released macbook pro´s come with thunderbolt which, without getting too much into it, smokes any and all other external interfaces to date. You should see more and more hardware taking advantage of that, announced over the course of this spring.           Mastering available here:

The TI is to date THE most finicky beast i have had the pleasure of (occasionally) connecting to my macbook and it never worked well unless i had it plugged directly into the usb plug closest to the back. Ie not using a hub in between. Considering what access have tried to do with usb (seemingly breaking all conventions to make it work) it´s a wonder even midi over usb works on it. In my studio that block of german craftmanship is hooked up directly as well. Additionally this is the first device of 2 i have come across where the cable actually matters in terms of operability           Mastering available here:

Ok so I got a 7 port powered hub thanks to all your suggestions. It works GREAT!

Just wanted to clarify for future readers that audio interface connected directly to the port (the one closer to you when facing the screen) and the hub on the other works just fine.

To the hub I have connected an external keyboard, a midi controller, midi keyboard, external harddrive and everything is just perfect.

Not all USB hubs are created equal. Some have something called "Multi TT" and most don't. As far as I know this mainly matters when you are connecting USB 2 and USB 1 devices to the same hub - if you only have a Single TT hub the USB 2 devices can be slowed down.

Link dump follows:

Tom's Hardware explanation and benchmarking:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/usb-technology,677.html

The left and right USB ports of pre-unibody C2D Macbook pros apparently have different power outputs (unknown how this applies to unibodies):
http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/04/mac-usb-audio-woes-m-audio-says-avoid-the-left-hand-usb-port/

A list of confirmed Multi TT hubs:

I have the Cables Unlimited hub mentioned:

In conclusion, all of this only matters if you are pushing a lot of bandwidth through the USB hub. But if you discover sound artifacts or latency issues with a hub, well, this could be why. Keeping the audio interface on a separate channel is a pretty sensible solution since MIDI data is comparatively miniscule bandwidth-wise.
