Question about Macbook pros

Hi Guys!

Im about to pick up the new 13" Macbook Pro and my problem is that it has only 2 USB ports. I am planning to replace it with my existing home studio setup and I need to connect atleast 4-5 usb devices being my soundcard, midi keyboard, midi controller, external hardrive and the occasional extra peripheral.

I dont have the cashish right now to get any firewire devices. I just need to connect all my old gear.

My question is, does anyone have experience using USB hubs? Any latency issues etc.?

Apple really needs to address this issue imo...

Thanks...

{EDIT} Ooops. just realised this should be in the equipment section. My bad...I hope the mods will move this.          StarLab - Label DJ/Artist for Digital Om Productions

Just make sure you get a hub that is powered (has it's own power plug) and you should be fine.           www.soundcloud.com/lunecell

I use a PC and my MOTU Traveler won't connect through a hub, only directly through the laptop. Everything else works just fine. So you should make sure you have a 30 day free warranty or something just to make sure it works first.

If you only have 2 usb outs though, you can always connect your soundcard to one and everything else to your hub. Midi controller latency should be fine.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

Connecting the soundcard directly and the other accessories to the hub sounds like a perfectly logical solution.

Think im gonna go with that.

If you need more native ports than one - this might get a problem (eg. Virus TI). As far as I know only one of the ports is native (full speed) the other one is shared with cam/keyboard/...

It's a joke, because the controller internally has many ports that are just disabled (one of the most retard hardware designs I've ever seen).           http://www.myspace.com/realtimeproject

Yes I have heard this somewhere as well that only one port is full speed. Wonder why apple hasnt addressed this issue. People are increasingly using this machine for pro applications and this flaw just takes the pro out of Macbook Pro.

there is no "pro" sound interface or converters in usb format , it s not really a problem but just 2 usb port is not much for sure...

ive got 2 cdj's, 1 soundcard, 1 mixer, 2 controllers and a mouse connected to my mbp without issues using a hub

Like someone said, get a good powered hub and you are fine.

Over twice the price and just one more port! Wish that was even an option for me.

I guess a good quality powered hub should be ideal with the soundcard going direct.           StarLab - Label DJ/Artist for Digital Om Productions
