Jimmy Hendrix is one of the fathers too.

Lot of good psychedellic rock bands was inspired in Jimmy`s music.

And this psychedellic world was influenced by this times. . .60s

Acid Mothers Temple are absolutely fantastic. Cool to see their name mentioned here. Have you heard Jim O'Rourke, Don Fleming, Sonic Boom or Godspeed You Black Emperor?

I've got to disagree with Panzer saying that hypno-monotony isn't psychedelic because it's sonic. You might as well say there's no such thing as psychedelic music. Psychedelia is much more than swirly shapes and fractal pictures. To me it's anything which affects consciousness, be that through music, art, drugs, whatever.

And do I stand alone in saying that Pink Floyd are a massively overrated pile of self-indulgent crap? The early stuff (Piper at the Gates of Dawn, See Emily Play), all the Syd Barrett stuff basically is amazing. 'Interstellar Overdrive' has to be one of my all-time favourite tunes. Dark Side of the Moon isn't a bad record either, but not as great as everyone seems to think. Anything following it though, especially 'The Wall' is absolutely hideous. The misogynistic overtones of that album are unforgivable. I have a female friend who after listening to that record felt shit for being a woman for ages. If you listen to the words properly you'll agree.

Check out 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola, and The Lost and Found for the best and most original psychedelic music you'll ever hear. The 13th Floor Elevators were the first band ever to be labelled 'psychedelic'. and they sound like no-one else on earth.

And I didn't know Goa Gil was in 'Family Dog' hats off to the man!           "One nation under a groove".

After the psychedelic assault of the early 70s, some sort of anti-movement emerged in the form of -progressive- rock, with bands like Yes, Genesis, Camel. A clean and sober sound replaced the freaky madness of before.
With the departure of Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd, this band could also be qualified as progressive rock.
See the parallel? History kinda repeats itself.

its pscedelic rock all the way
pink floyd ,jimihendrix , iron butterfly, king crimson ,beatles , janis joplins , Grateful dead ,
the doors , deep purple etc etc.

there is no shift or parrallel to psy rock, and pink floyd has remained psy and going away of syd hasnt changed many things yes the psy poetic sound > yes the voice , but psy element.... not .....well ......

psy rock doesnt have the categories like minimal progg or full on but its just psy rock or acid rock

ever been to the GD concert when garcia was alive? sure i missed ........ but its a psychedelic world bigger than one can handle ............... its not a party all the time for sure but a beautiful psy world where one can live everyday w or w/o the need for substances

hahaha just got carried away .staying with the post ........... "YES ITS PSYCHEDELIC ROCK FOR SURE "

Psychedelic Rock? Try anything from Soft Machine, Kevin Ayers's first solo album "Joy of a toy" and anything from Gong. About something more "modern" I would suggest Motorpsycho, a cult Norwegian band not that difficult to find in good record shops.
Enjoy!!!           ::Memento:Audere:Semper::

Well, one of my specialities is playing psychedelic sets at private parties that start off with the 60's stuff and ends with the latest sounds. Everything from Floyd, Barrett, 13th Floor Elevators, Electric Prunes, Hendrix, Doors, Gong, Soft Machine, Can, Amon Duul 2, Tomorrow, Jefferson Airplane onwards.......Btw, Quintessence came after the Floyd. Qunitessence had Raja Ram as a founding member, and Steve Hillage was in Gong, and is now System 7 along with Miquette, so yes imho, there is a link between psy trance and psy rock.           Turn On, Tune In, Trance Out!!!

imho ozric tentacles (especially more recent stuff like "waterfall cities" and "the hidden step") are about 50 times more psychadelic than 95% of modern-day psytrance i hear.

as for floyd et al, i've never really gotten around to checking them out.           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/
