One artist that still is doing stuff and for me one of the forefathers of electronica is Alan Parsons...

I still occasionally listen to his older albums like Tales of Mystery and Imagination, Eye in the Sky, I Robot, Eve.... There are some instrumentals in there that are so proto techno/trance... I noticed he recently put out another album and even wrote a track with Posford!!! (I wish I was a fly on the wall for that production session) but hell yeah to Sly and the Family Stone and to the P-Funk... For me and the culture I came from, these guys were the shizzy... My mother made it a point for me to be well educated in the arts of funk... Some other psychedelic rock/soul/funk artists that really still get my goat..... Herbie Hancock...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

floyd? the doors? zepplin? it's funny this thread comes up, because yes a lot of rock from that era was indeed psychedelic. but today, it's called "classic rock!"
its such a foundation of modern rock music, people forget the psychedelic roots.

just goes to show you the evolution of culture: what's just outsider and freaky and weird, becomes cutting edge, becomes just cool, then becomes co-opted by mainstream commercial culture, i.e. uncool.

a lot of the kids i grew up with said things like "no good music was made after te 70's", they were all into classic rock, but would probably not be caught dead at a trance party. they would call that freaky and weird, he he.

but there are signs that even some psytrance is progressing down that evolutionary path... depending where you are, i'd say its somewhere between cutting edge, cool, and even starting to get cheesy.

this is why you gotta keep up, keep looking for innovative sounds. have no fear, psychedlic music isn't going anywhere...

on a similar note, the outdoor place where Goa Gil plays when in the area (SF) is purported to be where the Grateful Dead had played. i try to watch the Gil party there and imagine back 30 years when people were doing the same kinda thing, dropping acid, and freaking out dancing to some psychedelic music...

ahhhh
          sound is vibration

check out pink floyds first album ' piper at the gates of dawn '
pink floyd at that stage was led by syd barrett. the music is different to themed pink floyd sound.
unfortunately too much acid catalysed his mental difference.
the music is gnomely psychedelic! listen to it few times tho!

Genesis - early days w/peter gabriel... nothin more need to be said.

Mike Oldfield - had some trippy moments in his early works (hergest ridge and ommadawn).

Focus - manage to create some nice tunes along the way (but some bad ones as well...)

and a more recent addition
Porcupine Tree first releases (befor they'd start working with aviv gefen!).           Out Here We're Stoned....
