You reckon? See I more inclined to think the opposite; I don't think having one would limit the creativity of either budding or establshed artists simply because there just aren't any hard and fast rules you 'have' to adhere to. However this is exactly what might make the running of one troublesome.

As I said before, I think the main problem would be that a chill-out production section would struggle to be broad enough to cover the variety of individual styles so it runs the risk of becoming a bit of a mish-mash. You pretty much have the freedom to just write what you hear in your head and/or what your technical skills will allow. I mean, trance artists do too, but it seems to me there's a set formula before it would be categorised as trance by the officianado's and most producers stick to 140bpm, 4/4 bass etc.

With something like say, psydub, you've got artists as diverse as our cowbell-loving Mr. Ott, Youth, Pitch Black and Capsula, each of whom have very distinct, individual styles but who still fall fairly under the same descriptive category.

Ahhhh I dunno. Am I making any sense at all??? I'm probably thinking about this wayyyyy too much , when really I'd love to have a production forum for chill-out and am delighted to be wrong for assuming there'd be a lack of Official Interest in the idea.

I'll shut up now. Bring it on red people.

yes floatyhippyflower, I can't write much english, but for me the rules are musicals and not the dictat of bpm!
I love chill ambient for the quality of the sounds and the variety, so this is the best world I heard in art school: produce!produce!
so each way is good and countain it own creativity feeling! let's explore.....
we speak the same language
boom!

Can I just take this opportunity to point out that I have never knowingly used a cowbell in my entire life.

Thank you.

Hahahaha. I was going to say, there must be some rare Honky-Tonk cowbell EP by Ott out there that I haven't heard.

Then my next guess was that, maybe he was referring to the triangle, which nicely rounds out the highs of many of your tracks.

I'll bet if you pitched a triangle down (or a cowbell up for that matter), they might sound similar.

I vote that this be the first piece of technical advice we post on any new forum.

Ahh - now triangles I use.

Anyone seeking advice on triangle parts should listen to the soundtrack to the film "Bullitt" [starring Steve McQueen] or any other film score by Lalo Schifrin.

Lalo Schifrin pwnz the triangle.

My favorite triangle rudiment is the "cowboy cook" roll, where you frantically hit all the insides of the triangle in a circular motion until everyone comes running to eat. Although I've never heard it used tastefully in a track. Ott, now is your chance to make this glorious musical achievement see it's way into a neat little song.

But my major question is: What is the best mic position for recording a rubber ducky?

Under the squirty arse bit perhaps? Just make sure you have mic shield on it to cut out the sibilance and that your ducky isn't filled with water before you make it fart.
