Artists make music for people ... in a nice way - a DJ respects the artists and is a tool to allow people to listen to in an environment where it's great to listen to it - LOUD!           Kittykat

I think its great to hear a DJ playing my tracks. Means i did a good job producing it. I of course hope the Dj has bought the track (either cd or seperate track).           http://www.facebook.com/nasa.tranceproject

Of course I am happy when DJ's play my music whether at a party or in their DJ mixes.

However, If a DJ is uploading a DJ mix or giving it away I definitely want to be credited in a tracklist. I love doing a random google and finding one of my tracks in somebodys setlist.

Any DJ who sells their mixes without permission of the producers are rip off artists..

Unreleased music should not be made available to the public by a DJ in any form.

I think that the today way of how music is selled, and promoted, if somebody's music is somewhere is already good, because it makes promotion....

Most of psychedelic artists nowadays gain their life on live gigs, so if they are more known is just more bookings who come....
I think nobody today still think to earn huge amount of money ba cd selling... and digital online music sells are not so huge as somebody can think

Thank you everyone for contributing to the discussion. From this we can establish a few simple practises for DJs making downloadable mixes:

- support the artists and labels you feature in your mix; buy originals!
- don't use unreleased material without permission.
- properly credit artists and labels with every mix.
- don't charge money for your mix.

Sound fair enough?

I am still curious to know if there are any producers or labels not down with having their music featured in a mix...

would artists mind if you made a mix, burnt it to cd, and handed it out on the street for free?

of course it would be recorded as one continuous track... professionaly design and track list... I have been wanting to do this but thought to ask first...           --- Love In Light, Dance In Darkness ---

no response? c'mon... this is serious question, I don't want to do this and get busted for copyright or something... I've done some research but it seems a pretty vague and grey area...           --- Love In Light, Dance In Darkness ---

Oddly enough... going back to the label owner who got me thinking about this, he considered a CDr mix to be completely innocuous because it had little in the way of reach... whereas "illegal MP3 trading" (his bizarre way of referring to the act of putting a DJ mix up for download) was considered very damaging to industry efforts. Go figure.

@ the journey man project - i went for a festival last year and i remember there being free promo mix cds around. i dont remember anyone really saying much against it so i doubt anyone would really mind. i guess in the situation the only thing that really might be worth paying attention to is the inclusion of any unreleased material. artist's consent would be the only way to get around something like that i believe. but for released material i dont see it as being much of a hassle.

Well that would be a subjective answer from artist to artist i guess. When you have a relatively new/upcoming artist, what he most needs is promo so i doubt newbies would mind because it only does them good. As for the veterans, they do need promo but not in this manner since a satisfactory number of people have heard their sound & acknowledge them as an established artist.

It also depends on whether your talking about released or unreleased music? Most established artists wouldn't be too comfortable with their unreleased tunes floating around before release even though it happens many times - most times it being the artist's fault for carelessly handing out tunes. Once again for newbies this would only mean promo so thats the other side of the coin.

If the track is signed however it boils down to the label and contract with the artists, based on who has what rights and so on...

All this offcourse in a very Utopian sense and does not happen in reality...

Its interesting that trough the time reading this topic and thinking about theme of it, my good friend from Tokyo contact me on MSN and tell me that he was at one club last night and listen my tracks by one DJ who played that night. First thing which is coming trough is: "Fuckin' awesome!!!", and in that moment i realize what should i write on this topic.
Of course that i like to hear at the dance floor, recorded DJ sets, radio streaming, whenever! Its really great feeling that you know to someone appreciate your work.
Today, as we all know pirates music take over whole music world. many labels are closed, many of them become digital, CD are less, vinyls are more less then CDs. Thats sad. People dot have money compare on that how much albums and compilations is "OUT NOW" per one year. Everyone who learn to start software become "artists" over night. Some friends open label and release that music with out charging for tracks. "Artists play" at "festivals" and whole scene become one big atomic bomb (composed of everything). Of course that pirates will rule the music world! I cant blame anyone cause dont have money for CD and play my music downloaded from internet. Even if he recorded mix with my tracks and put as promo on internet. I do that also. Everyone record promo DJ sets. Its not bad at all. I agree that DJ should not charge DJ set if he play with pirates but if he buy CDs of course that he will charge his DJ set.
Here we come to other, lets call, problem. What if DJ dont want to risk to rune or lost his originals and make copy of it on burned CD? What if its unreleased promo tracks of some artists who are his friends? What if its buying music from digital downloads? You cant prove that, can you?

That sums it up. I like to hear my music in dj sets, it's always cool to hear how the dj has mixed the track in, and out.           ________________________
