Producers: are you cool with DJs using your music in a mix?

I think it is probably fair to say that DJs form the majority of the psytrance buying public. DJs are the conduit connecting producers to dance floors worldwide. Aside from playing music out for a crowd, DJs also record promotional mixes which are then put up for download on the net in MP3 format. I have recently heard some objections to this practise; there are those who consider DJ mixes to be "illegal MP3 trading." This is in spite of the fact that Isratrance, Psynews, Discogs, and pretty much every major electronic music community on the planet has a forum for posting DJ mixes. As far as I'm concerned, DJ mixes are an accepted part of electronic music culture--not just a "necessary evil," but something positively beneficial to the industry as a whole.

Of course, there are ways in which the promotional benefits of a DJ mix are neutralized. The failure to provide a track listing leaves the listener with no means of finding out more about the artists or labels showcased. Additionally, it seems very fishy to me for a DJ to charge money for a mix. But if a DJ isn't selling a mix--and if they make the effort to provide a track listing--is there a problem?

Now we arrive at the crux of the matter: are there any psytrance artists out there who object to DJs using their music in a downloadable mix when credit is given? I think a lot of us DJs would be interested in knowing if we should be avoiding the use of anyone's work.

im extra cool if someone use my tracks
it only meen they liked it
for their own benefit and ethic i do wanna think that the dj's own orginal cds tho , also for the quality.. i dont think dj that preform with mp3 can get very far , not to mention there are some laws in some countries againt this allready.
(he he he , law against mp3 , genious , next is law against boring formula copy / paste tracks lol)

for me that is no problem. i'd wee it as a form of promotion which is - especially in my case as an artist in the starting slot - highly appreciated! when credit is givne, that is - if not, it's not a problem, but it's not useful promotion then.           Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

No one else? Maybe the label owner that complained to me so vociferously is the only one with the problem?

^ that goes without saying

I think Basilisk is talking about mixes made available for download

Personally, I've been thanked by producers for playing their tracks in my DJ sets (and not just from promos)

Perhaps we need a list of labels that do not condone such behaviour as I'd not like to be in trouble for playing something I think is groovy, only to find out that they don't like it

Sounds strange to me, a label would complain about using their artist material in a DJ set, unless it was unreleased and they know you were not sent a promo, then you're opening up a whole can of worms, like suchabody said it was OK for me to play it and the lack of communication between artist, label and DJ friends

I've never heard of a label complaining though Basilisk. Would you care to elaborate further?

I think today once your music is released or out on the internet..keeping any expectations of your music not being used in a mix or anything similar is impossible. + why worry when you're getting free promotion?

For my music as Zuloop I'm happy to be played in DJ sets. Pretty sure Colin feels the same about our Voice of Cod stuff.

I just wish that DJ's had some kind of visual display to show what a track was... not from an artists perspective... but sooo many times times I've thought "MY GOD?!?!... what IS this tune?! I would have bought so many CD's off of the strength of single tracks.

that would be so cool and great promo for the artist as well. but i think basilisk is talking about sets being made available for download. depends on whether its unreleased or not to begin with. if its released i dont see how it should be a problem.           missing plug-in
