Today I was thinking about police at parties. In different countries I have visited, the police have had different attitudes to the atmosphere and goings on of the parties.
In some places the police have tried to be intimidating and controlling, in others, they have been humble and chilled out. I wonder what makes police all over the world different.
Is the attitude of these enforcers reflective on that particular society?

Thats quite easy to answer.

If your gouvernment and politicians are corrupt, agressive, opressive and non-democratic then your Police will turn out corrupt, aggressive and non-democratic = arrogant, hardlined and sometimes abbusive and violent.

It depend how you define corruption but there's a big difference with the term "corruption" from country to country (even within The European Community).
Most countries have corruption on some level but when that corruption, misuse of power and authority, agression and violation of human rights show it's ugly face in the policeforce/gouvernment then there's something fundamental wrong with that country's "democratic system" and the politicians in power. Unfortinently more and more countries become more and more corrupt simply because the politicians have lost their sense of being the people's politicians. Instead they think about themselves and what they can get for themselves (political power). The worse kind of society is a society that let their politicians, religious leders, police force and/or Army dictate how people should think and live their lives.

This is a reality that too many countries seem to go toward these days

I don't think so...at least not in all cases.

I have seen a wide variety of police attitudes even within a single city. When I used to live in Austin (fairly liberal city in Texas), you could see the two extremes - some police (probably the majority) had the attitude that they wanted to shut down *every* party by any means necessary. They would harass and often abuse party-goers and organizers. But you would also see the ones that were super-cool. I can remember several instances where the cops would bust an illegal party - half the time, they would sympathize with the organizers and sometimes even apologize. A couple times they would chat with the organizers and try to think of places they could set up a sound system and NOT have to worry about being busted. A lot of police that were hired as security for larger events were also incredibly cool with everything.

In Germany, I have so far only encountered extremely cool police. I have seen them at festivals walking around, chatting, laughing, but otherwise leaving the party-goers alone (even despite open drug use). In the city where I live (Leipzig), illegal parties are a huge part of the electronic music culture. Loads of empty warehouses. Even if the cops know about it, if nobody is complaining, the party goes on. No victim, no crime.

It also depends on how the individual party-goer or organizer approaches police. I personally have no problem with police in general, so I treat them with the respect that I would treat anybody I am meeting for the first time. I have yet to have any serious problems with police, despite having organized countless events, many illegal. But the people that automatically have the "fuck the cops" attitude bring problems to themselves, IMO.

lol, if police here in Brazil walked on street without a gun i don't know if we would have too many polices lefting (alives!!)
==============================
Police in Brazil tries to do his job. But, earns SHITTY, has a low infra, old guns, no safety and as a consequence we have: scared and agressive p.officers, corrupted and some connected to the traffic and other illegal activities.
I'm not saying everyone is a bandit, but a lot of them are. And who's guilty? The government (90% corrupted, and understand corruption as, stealing, killing and etc.) who can afford better conditions to the policemans but doesn't.
Nobody confronts a policeman when he stops and begin to use his power against you. Policemen here is considered to be so danger as is the bandit.
Well i kept writing and lost my point. Fact is that i'm conformed with this situation, as most brazillians are. Words of revolution means nothing to me. I'll keep living my life praying to never cross with a f!@#$%¨&* corrupted policeman who wants to kidnapp me.

Peace. (and merry x-mas to everyone)

Yes, it is great that NZ police do not carry guns. Infact, unlike the US and other countries, it is not that easy to get a gun here, so when people here actually do commit lethal crime, it is usually quite gross cause they are using bizarre weapons. I do not think that there is a need for our police to ever get guns, this would just piss off the public, arouse us in unneccessary ways and maybe turn us into a more violent country than we already are.

Police here are kind of divided too. We make a joke that most of the power tripping ones were the ones who had no friends in school and never had a lay, so being a police person makes up for their sad begginnings, on the other hand the police are cool, standing around at parties, tapping their feet chatting to people about their night, then going home. It is very rare for police to be at parties though.

i was at a protest once where people were chanting:
"f#ck the police, f#ck the police!"

then it got pretty violent and people started to scream:
"where the f#ck are the police?!?!"

some dude had a "legalize marijuana sign..."
