yeah people, come on !!!
Quit that senseless talk already...

This is the problem of the internet, not knowing what the person meant with his writing exactly and guessing the meaning of things that were said..

Chill out everybody !!!!!

anyway, is anyone going to Brazil´s cachueira alta festival this weekend ? have you seen the line up ? its great !

kisses ! :*

This thread is clearly coming to its natural conclusion, but having only just seen it I'll throw in my two cents worth..........

In the chillout the music is not the centre of attention (most of the time) as it is on main dancefloors. But for me, the essence of my chillout dj sets is to allow people to change the tempo of their bodies and minds to a more relaxed state (i.e. to chillout), allow them to chat to or to make new friends, while enjoying a cup of chai and a spliff. All this actually requires little more than putting on some basic ambient music (along the lines of the old album Twelve, which I think is on TIP). Without the ability to do this, the chillout Dj is not doing his job.
Then the real fun starts......
I like to play anything that puts a smile on the face of the previously mentioned chai drinking chillee, but more to the point on my face (if I don't like a tune, why on earth would I play it). This can be anything
Simple electronic downbeats (Total Eclipse -Violent Relaxation second disc)
More colourful psychedelic music: Sphongle, Entheogenic, and yes OTT;
Lounge (although this doesn't really float my boat)
Dub and simple reggae;
Stories - at the last couple of Baraka parties I have played Just William stories.....
Also, in the UK you can play an incredible range of 'World Music'. If its in a language that nobody knows then, a DJ can get away with playing cheesy pop (as long as its from Guatemala....)
And finally...(although this overlaps with some already mentioned)... tunes to get people dancing. Dancing in a good chillout is one of life's great pleasures, and i rate it alongside the main dancefloor. (tracks 5 & 6 from Sphongle remixed are prime examples)

Finally (actually), I don't care if you are mixing on fifteen decks with all the tunes in perfect time and harmony, while standing on one leg and blindfolded.... if it sounds worse than someone 'just sticking on a cd'. DJs who are more technically proficient should be able to create more interesting music, but let your set speak for itself.

How the music sounds to the chillee is the be all and end all of this debate

very interesting topic...

Being a progressive house/trance (ex)DJ myself, i was interested in the building up process, uplifting all the way... to communicate this eneragy to the crowd, which in return would also give me energy, i.e. flow of energies...

I tried mixing chillout few times, with friends, and i must admit, it was real fun, a hell of a nice trip...

and i was wondering what do chillout DJs feel when they spin, what do they communicate, how do they feel the flow of energy with the crowd?

all i can say is that i put in a lot of time and effort in making sets to get the right flow .... i personally dont care what people say .... being in india there are hardly few ppl who listen to chill ... and organising chill event being nearly impossible keeping the crowd in mind (they want pills no chills )

still i dont care ill keep making sets and playing for people if they want me to .... somehow the whole thing just dosnt bother me .....

Hi guys

I've been DJing chillout for a couple of years now and really love doing so - and I can't beatmatch (though I would like to learn, just to add another weapon to my brain-altering armoury!).

Just because I can't beatmatch - I don't own decks, and have never tried to learn - doesn't mean I'm a bad DJ. I put loads of thought into what tracks I like and when to play them, and put a lot of effort into making sure that they blend into one another consistently. I think that tune selection, both in preparing what to take to the party, and in what to play, must be at least as hard with chill - after all, there's a lot more music to choose from, and not all of it will mix into everything.

It's definitely possible to feel the vibe of the room and both respond to and guide it when doing chillout. I can't say what or how I do, but I do my best to 'get it' and either give people what they want, or give them something totally unexpected and surprise them. Maybe even educate them. You certainly don't get as much chance to surprise and educate people on the trancefloor (IMHO).

Maybe you should point this out to the naysaying beatmatchers, and also that you're having at least as much fun as they are - and are able to get a drink and skin up a spliff while you're DJing, too...

i like to watch tv while making chill out music at home.
it gives me perspective-like what i watch on tv i like to select a background tune for the visual
          I am the darkness that is the light and the stillness that is the dancing :)
