ambient rules cause you can play tracks at minus 16% or whatever needs to get done! you can drop the beat out and create this huge wash of sounds and then drop the beat back in totally fucking with the listeners and they love it, not like on the trancefloor where everyone is so damn picky! ambient is all about the flow! being able to work the tempo is also nice, theres more freedom in that. knowing your music is what makes you a good chillout dj, haveing a sense of flow, and having fun with it, also trying to trip people out with crazy sounds is fun!!!!!!!

I get that old one alot too. My usual response is to "each there own". I then I ususally kick 'em in the nuts and say "chill out to that"

Seriously though ... its all good and we play a part. Chill is a important part of the scene and thanks to people like yourself we have DJs who are willing to research the huge amount of chill tracks out there and play us the best . So just give em the middle finger and keep chillin'

How do you feel when somebody say`s to you that it`s not hard to play Chill-out because you don`t have to beatmix,or grade the B.P.M.(LIE!!!)and the only thing that you have to do is play 1 track after other track?????

Any comments about this blasphemy?????

I think for the next track i would gently drop the needle on one of my favorite neverending traditionnal indian ragas vinyls and cue a ''now, take a deep breath'' or something

Hi everybody !!!

It´s the first time I´m gonna talk about chill out in here...
Before I answer the question I have to give you my opinion and feedback from what I have seen around, because it´s based on that that my opinion is built. So I´m sorry if I cant summerize and give you all a short answer, but... It´s an interesting talk anyway.
Nice to be here with you !

I have been playing here in Brazil for 2 years , I live in Brasilia, so I´ve been to parties like Universo Paralello( 2001/2002, 2002/2003), and Trancendence ( 2002 and 2003) both at Chapada dos Veadeiros, my back yard, and Pirenopolis, recently on my 3rd carnival( 2002,2003,2004), on my front yard...

I have discussed this question over and over with many people and I tell them all that Im not a DJ. I say i have a good musical taste and I know how to operate a cdj. PERIOD.

I have to agree with OTT. ( If it is OTT , Olivier(FR) just gave me a cd of OTT, in Trancoso this summer, and he said I shouldnt give it to anyone in the near future, because this was going to be ´´out`` soon and this and that, but I myself had a track, a reggae one, #2 of the cd he gave me , already and for about 6 months at least... I was so proud of myself hahaha )

I couldnt agree more with everything he said in his post.

The Chill out area is so necessary in a party that lasts more than X hours, ( uhhh, just thought of a new topic for the forum kkk )
AS the main dance floor is.

Is because of the Chill out area that the party exists, in my opinion.
Why ?
Nobody, I mean NOBODY, can stay at the main dance floor for more than what ? 1 entire day ? I mean non stop dancing.
That is phisically impossible.
I dont know mentally, but I have had 2 years of Phisiology in my university ( Im a Psychologist ), I have been in this area ( festivals ) for 2 years too, and what I think is that it is impossible to be there , dancing, ( at least, not mentioning any drug use ) for more than a day.

Right, after this thought, I could say that it´s AT the Chill out area that the party really takes place, because it´s where people rest, eat, talk, smoke together, date, flert, blablablablablabla - an endless blablabla

Do I argue with ´´ REAL `` Dj´s about not being a ´´REAL`` Dj ?

Not !

Some of them KNOW the importance of the Chill out.
Some of them are learning about that now, recently.
Whoever has a different opinion, ok , but I think the Chill out is much more than just the party... wow !
They say trance is a religion, a way of life... right ?
Right. But agreeing with what I said before, that the Chill out is the real party, and everything happens FOR the Chill out and AT the Chill out, then....
The Chill out itself IS the religion and IS the Way of life...

If you think this way... you can perfeclty see the difference between trance and chill out.

Trance is trance, there are some stiles, they keep ppl moving, dancing, entertained, and all that.

But Chill out unites OH SO MANY thing in one.
Not mentioning all kinds of music that you can play ... ranging from ambient to Brazilian Popular music, from lounge ( what is lounge anyway ? I thought it was a room in a house or bar ... ?!?! ) to trip hop, acid jazz, and all that ...
Right, we´re talking about music.
From this point of view, the Chill out is already a lot more than the Main Floor.

To be able to keep an enviroment like that , during your set, is much more than keeping the dance floor going during one´s set.

I think Im NEVER going to become a Trance DJ.
I could do a thousand more things at the Chill out.

There is such thing as interaction in the main floor.
But the interaction I have seen at the Chill out, just to mention the one I ´ve seen last Sunday at the Moon Patrol party here in Brasilia, with the LIVE from Divina Metamorfose ( more or less the same guys of Hyperception - which play trance ) ...I mean... THAT was interaction.
I couldnt count how many musical instruments were there ....
I would play a track, turn it down untill they caught the beat, and they´d go on ... everyone... together... man...

and i played a track after the other. period.

I guess I prefer to go on not being a dj, and keep on participating on that kind of thing.....

yeah...

enough already right ? lol !!!

see u later

Hi There !!!
I think in chill out we have many possibilits , if u play Ambience , for sure you not gonna mix in the beat , coz the track dont have it , so u mix in the music_background , and this is not soo easy as much ppl think ....
If u play beat track , u mix in the beat , why not ?
A dj must do his work as the best way they can do .

Theres a lot of options ...
_Ambience
_Dub
_Trip Hop
_Break Beat
_Broken Beat
_Big Beat
and the list go on ....

Dub is impossible to mix , only if u had the same bassline and "similar" tempo and stuff, but the others is very possible , so if u wanna make better Go Practice .

I alredy saw many , many , serios ppl , Btw , Own Producer of the track that his plaing not mixing in the beat , its a option u can do . In my opinion i preffer on the mix , much more serios , coz many ppl really only press PLAY on CDJ .

thats it
my opinion /

or we could also say to Justin, that if u argue with fools they beat u by experience and bring you to their level...so forget those who dont know...for me personally, is much more challenging to link 30 tracks of good chill and create a story than to beeat match boom ts boom ts boom! the 4/4 beat is easy- once you got it-just goes ,with not too much thought.
but with chill...its different...u mix on the beat, on the highhats, you fademix so many different tunes, samples and so on...there is no limit...and u really really have to know your music well-thats the key! because its not just 4/4 from start to end (and i dont mean to downsize either efforts- i enjoy both, just find harder to create an excellent chill set)

It's all about creating a nice atmosphere...I have played both in chill-outs and dancefloors...
Sometimes i did beatmix in the chill-out...or played with some fx on the mixer...delay & phaser...with sound-fx or spoken words from fairy-tales...
There's much more creativity to be done in a chill-out...i even had people play with me on flute or guitar/sax...and fiddle with some fx-machine, while playing tunes...or using a synth...
U can play soooo many styles of music in a chill-out...it's up 2 U !!!!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of playing with Divinae Metamorphosis , a group that perfomes a Live in Brazil, that i recently saw in pirenopolis, .. but I didnt have the chance to do that in there...

But last weekend it was like, i put one song, and they start performing with all these instruments ( cant count how many ), and everyone else in the crowd who felt like it, would go ´´on stage`` and help out doing whatever they could...

Then I´d slowly turn the music down to a point, where they could take off without any of the music...

and on , and on and on...
man...

I have no words to describe this kind of interacion.. Hope to repeat some of that soon...

SEE U,

ooooohh it is possible to mix! and let me tell you its most rewarding!! it can either be beat-mixed or you can mix atmospheres too (with appropiate tracks) but anyway i agree with most of you, you can mix anything, with technique or no technique, old stuff (very old stuff!!) or the latest releases as long as you create atmospheres and have something to "say" or share with people that like to hang out at the chill out.
