Penta played for an hour last Wednesday night here in San Francisco and it was one of the best sets from anybody I've heard in years.
I first saw him play in 2000 or 2001 at a festival up here when he still had a mullet and was new to the country and put on a crazy live set. Never heard anything like that.
I've seen him numerous times since then, but Wednesday night's set showed how much he's matured in his music. Really impressive to see that. Most artists seem to regress into sophomoric, easy full on or something. Not so with Penta. I heard sophistication and a certain wisdom that I thought could only be found in the older music.
He is playing at a street fair here this Saturday, along with my other local favorites from Russia - Parus. Looking forward to it. Weather is supposed to be beautiful.
