Penta - Horn Please (Auraquake, Mar. 2007 )

Track List:
1. Perfect Sunday - 148 bpm
2. Aerobica - 150 bpm
3. Stag Party - 150 bpm
4. Foggy - 150 bpm
5. Olympia - 148 bpm
6. Take Two - 152 bpm
7. Non-Profit - 154 bpm
8. Why Not? - 146 bpm
9. Here We Come - 148 bpm

This is the third album of Nikita Tselovalnikov, the well-known and respect night psy artist responsible for the Penta project and the Auraquake Records, the label that released this album.
The cover is more colorful than what I expected, but remains on the same "plain" style of the Auraquake releases. I read in an interview (at psynews) that it has to do with the design of Indian cabs, and also the album's name is related to some sentence written on Indian trucks. Cover:

Disclaimer: I like previous Penta releases, specially his first album and slower tracks like Dangerous Game and XML (finally managed to bought the VA - Radical Simplicity because it was sold out), which I always play on my parties (with good feedback). But it's no secret that I'm not into 150+ bpm music, so this should be read with skepticism. I enjoy both his previous albums, which had average bpm a little above 145. His first album, Pentafiles (my favorite), have 4 tracks at 146 bpm and two at 144. On his second album, Funraiser, we have 3 tracks at 145, 3 more at 146, two others at 148 and one at 140 which brought the average to a little more than 145, but when comparing it to his debut it was obvious that the music was getting faster, and this third album arrived to confirm this tendency, it has the faster Penta tracks ever released.

The first track was already released on the free compilation Looney Tunes, since it's not possible to buy this compilation I consider the track previously unreleased. Perfect Sunday (T1) is energetic and danceable with some funny elements; surely makes me bounce around. It's packed with some Penta's characteristic elements.
I'm going fast through the next 3 tracks: Aerobica (T2) arrives with a deep nightish bass and works really perfect for an aerobic workout (I tried and felt like I could run forever). I like it, sometimes it sounds like there is too much high-hats, but also there's variation in the high hats. Stag Party (T3) begins with funny Simpsons' samples, and has even funnier samples inside:

"- Cross your heart and hope to die?
- Yep.
- Stick a needle in your eye?
- Yep.
- Jam a dagger in your thigh?
- Yep.
- Eat a horse manure pie?
- Yep!"

Driving bass, crazy effects and a nice kick work: definitely a favorite. Foggy (T4) also has an excellent kick work, and samples from TV Series "Due to some violent content, viewer discretion is advised". Uhmmm, made me remember his previous album, which has Simpsons' samples and that "Next on Sci-Fi" sample. On Stag Party and Foggy for brief moments I can hear the atmospheres that I enjoy on night music, Penta's previous releases had them, but in this album they rarely appear.

Olympia (T5) comes back to 148 bpm, it's a very tight track, becoming steadier after its middle, which occasional guitar chords that add a little energy now and then. Next we have Take Two (T6), with 152 bpm and some bass variations that work very well for me. Interestingly it does not sound as noisy or dense as some slower stuff here.

Non-Profit (T7) is the faster ever released by Nikita. It has 154 bpm and over used samples from Sin City, but the funny thing is a sample of some guy dying in some video game "ahaa" and a car horn. Overall is better than what I expected, but not among my favorites.

Why Not? (T8) is the slowest track in this release, and is also one of my favorites. A deep and continuous bass line set the environment, some elements happening during almost 32 kicks and getting each time louder help to create a constantly tense atmosphere. Around its middle the track becomes more melodic and I start to smile. After the break there comes the samples and the track gets denser. Good ideas and flow in this track, really enjoyed the structure of the first half.

Closing the album is Here We Come (T9), a track that pounds at 148 bpm with piercing synths and sometimes dirty/noisy effects. It's also melodic, steady and sometimes too noisy, but I like it.

The album is concise, following a style but developing inside this style. The quality is as good as previous Auraquake and other top night labels' releases, sometimes too much things happening at the same time and too noisy, but overall nice. The music is mostly fast, the higher bpm will please a many people, but not me. I also felt a lack of purpose on some tracks; don't know if these tracks really lack a storyline or if I was not able to get it. It does not fit my personal taste as well as his previous album, but I can't say I don't like it or that I'm disappointed, and I'd like to hear it at a party.

Recommendation: I strongly recommend this release if you like night music around 150 bpm. Some will call it dark psytrance, but I'm being conservative and calling it night music. It's packed with Penta's trademark elements, like diversified samples and a good dose of kick variation (I love this). The release has 9 previously unreleased tracks, summing over 72 minutes of music. Check the samples.

Favorites: 1(!), 3, 8(!), 9.

It's time to move on to the next step in the psychedelic revolution. We've reached a certain point, but we're not moving any more.

^^
yes locus i feel the same way too, xml is also my fav penta track. Heard the samples online and all I keep thinking is what happened to all the melodies???
I liked the melodic experimental stuff in his early yrs. Anyway seems like hes really diggin the dark style and the samples sound like they would rock the dancefloor. I look forward to hearing him live for the first time in July. Its something ive been waiting to do for a long time now.

lokus, radical simplicity is not the name of a Penta track, but the name of the compilation in which XML was released (maybe you just made a typing mistake, if so ignore this).
