SHUT UP AND DANCE!!! take a break first though....=)

ME personaly I like to do a cartwheel onto the stage first then a short pause then a slow clap (like in the movies) then I pause again and say real loud...... ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBAAAAALL!!! then I play a Fat Albert remix of the "its a small world" track THEN.... a smaller pause THEN I play some PSY... oh yeahh it ROCKS and fuck everything else

LOL! Right on, dude.

I swear some trancers have become such whiners ... oh there is a small gap between DJ's (boo hoo). Comeon guys this is ridiculous - whats next - you dont like the color of the t-shirt the djs are wearing cause it messes up your trip. Puhlease. Whatever happened to showing your appreciation for the DJ's by giving them a small gap between their sets and applauding them. These people work hard - for very very little money and you guys cannot even have a small break between sets to show your appreciation. Shame on all you who are complaing about this!! What the hell is wrong with you people?

We're going to bring you out to nyc just for that... if I don't see a cartwheel then you have to pay for your plane ticket.

I always ambient mix out from the dj before me...

I'll also ask if he knows around where the drum drops out and what key it's in if he knows...

If it's a live set before me... then yes a few second break, and if the crowd starts clapping, then I make it longer.

There should never be dead air between dj's.
Dead air is different than an ambient (intro) mix.

only between live sets should warrant a pause... but we're used to one live headliner here, guess if there is like 8 live sets back to back... probably don't want too much dead air. When there is only one live headliner, it's more like a concert than a party. (guess I'm used to the club scene a bit more) and there is the antipication of them going on and the exitement of a killer set when it's done.

guess it depends on the situation and who the dj is... I mean, if you're playing some party and 50 people showed up for a 1000 seat room... Probably don't really want to stop the music and try to get them to clap... you'd have to wait for half the crowd to get out of the bathroom or back from a smoke break to hear it...

If someone is playing after me, i'm not usually around for the clapping anyways (time to join the party) I'm usually out of the next guys way and give him lots of time to mix out. I also have it written down and tell and show him where the song breaks down to basic bass and kick for beat mixing or where the song breaks down to ambient for an ambient mix, and also tell him the BPM (I try to leave them on a standard 145 bpm track with and easy mixout) and what key it's in.

Some guys mix out, and some let it go...
the guys that mixes out the track, 3 minutes in during the melody, kinda get on my nerves. I find it a bit rude, it's almost saying this song sucks, but I don't let it get my back up about it...
I've done my job by job as the dj by then anyways...

anyways...
my 2 cents.

Oh ya, one other thing... and If I find out the harmonic resonance of the room, I'll also let them know what it is...

At the Blacklite Forest show, they applauded after every dj. It's cool, but IMHO, not really neccessary. I guess it just depends on the people or situation... maybe it's a cultural thing.
No one ever claps for the chill djs.

We screamed, we hooted, we hollerd and it was awesome!!! The energy was at that level so it felt completely natural. The DJs had a big smiles when it happened, and honestly if anybody said that doing that was wrong they'd sound like a fool.

Its all about the right place and time.

This is pretty interesting to read about. In m personal opinion, most DJ's play for at least an hour (hopefully 2 or more) before someone else comes to fill their position. Unless the party is STRICTLY regulate as the the specific sub-sub-sub-genre of psychedelic trance which is to be played, I see no problem at all with a transitional/intro mix from the next DJ, considering she/he doesnt allow a massive gap of silence or try to skitter-mix in their tune.

People dont complain when a live act takes a second to fire up their groove after a DJ (considering its not an obscene gap) an I feel like DJs should be held to no greater standard, from a performers point of view.

Its all love, and some people have an interesting story to tell, which may or may not transcend the data encoded into the track the person before them happened to be playing.

Also, there have been occasions where the person playing before me asks that I let their final track play to the end, in which case Im happy to oblige considering those tunes are usually very intense/sentimental tunes.

just a reminder that this is a discussion forum, and i don't think its fair to dismiss opinions that you do not agree with as "bitchin" or "whining". Obviously there is a difference of opinion on this matter, which is fine, its good to disagree, variety is spice but please, don't frame your arguments against another by belittling them, or dismissing their valid points as whining. thank you.

It's nice that we can all share our opinions on this matter.

It makes me elated actually. And Im glad you brought this up because apparently its a hot item and lots of people have lots to say about it.

I for one dont care as long as its not like more than a minute, mistakes happen, dj's cant mix in, a stoner hits the power surge. Whatever the case is. Clapping after a really long set is permissable by me too, but then again not too long lol.

I think Kiva was kidding, I have been known to be wrong before though.

Spice is definitely life. For sure.

Peace and Grease,
J

personally as a DJ I prefer a very brief pause. But then again I like a party where all the DJ's arn't playing the same bpm or style of psychedelic music.
I can see the appeal of continous flow - but I prefer a bit of drama in my night, ie - pauses and waits for new and interesting course.
Ofcourse trippy ambient interludes are always great. It's not about ego - it's about anticipation. Some people like to be aware that a change of DJ and style is comming. Especially if they think the currendt music sucks.
Our parties tend to include psy - progressive/ techno and some full-power, which is IMO sounds better with the brief pauses in between.
Besides a change in BPM's of 10 ie prog too full-on or vice-versa does not sound good without a break in between.
NOw if you want the whole night to be one continous track - book all the same stlye DJ's and don;t break between them - but who wants continuity in a psychedelic scene?
