I look at it this way: since each new DJ coming into the booth has a different track selection aesthetic, they have to "earn their keep", whether they pause or not. That is- if they don't pause I can still notice the discontinuity so in some ways it doesn't seem to matter. Once they've "earned their keep" i'm in their pocket.

I like to begin with something ridiculous (aka stupid), or, something deeply ambient which subliminally brings in the groove and hence builds anticipation before slamming it in.

Otherwise i'm not to picky about the matter. The only time it bothers me is when there's a +15 minute gap because for some reason they couldn't get the next act setup properly while the previous act was playing. This happened in Turkey between Infected Mushroom and Digital Talk, and believe me, I was so ready for Digital Talk after 2 hours of I.M.

Over time i've learned to set my gear up in adverse situations so I can quickly get going and typically crossfade from the previous person into my stuff.

And if there is a pause, ah what the hell, clap if you feel good. It's all fun anyway.

Well I am not a DJ or at the party either, but I think there are different times and ways for people to show there appreciation. It does seem a little rock-star. Of course Mistress of Evil most likey has label regulation of:
“No Applause By Clapping Allowed Between Sets” or NABCABS sometimes shorten to BS

thats right and we'll flog you if you don't obey our rules, mwah ha ha. (ok, ok, only if you ask us too) (do i have to mention that i'm kidding here, i know isratrance doesn't always have much room for humor...)

anyway, maybe to revise my original statement, i just don't like absolute silence in between sets. it feels too much like starting and stopping. but if you want to let the track run out, then immediately play the next track, or break mix or whatever, i don't mind that kind of pause, transistion whatever...           Bringing Dreams to Life!

Wow this topic totally could have started a world war. Glad it didnt cuz I really wanted to share my 2 cents.

I prefer an event where all of the music is programmed to make an overall theme, or feel.

As a dancer: I Hate it. It spoils my trip and takes me out of my trance. When I’m dancing, I don’t really care who is playing as long as the tracks are good and they keep their tennis shoes out of the dryer.

As a promoter: I think the lineup should be programmed so that the genres of music and different styles can work together, better so that the next set doesn’t have to be so hard to lock in with the one before. I in the past have had my Dj’s set up the upcoming performer into their genre or leave them with a couple seconds of noise/ ambient sounds to mix into. I really just don’t like the pause in the music.

As a Dj: I know it can be hard sometimes… (to match up to some crazy track that you’ve never heard before) Nevertheless, I agree with M.O.E. It really is kind of Rock Star to stop the whole party for your set….is it necessary? I think No.

Im still enjoying my trance however it may come, this is just my preference.           I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

I really don't see any problem with it as long as it's short. It's sometimes cool to throw in a little bit of normalcy every once in awhile. Say....to applaud an amazing set that a dj is obviously deserving of, or to announce/say a little something about the next one on. I like to view DJ sets as a musical journey, but also as a performance, especially with live sets. Any live set that kicks my ass for 3 hours I want to give some applause for, regardless of my "level of conciousness." I really don't think 20-30 seconds is too much of a break in flow, and you can do it over a quiet ambient intro of the next song or something. I guess it really depends on the situation. At the last party I was at, we stopped the music after one DJ's awesome set and sang happy birthday to him. It was cool.

I enjoy the small outro for each dj. I believe they are each telling their own story.

Not only can ambient fades with outros/intros (if the tracks even have them) be enjoyable, they're often necessary. Yes, there is an overall journey and flow, but sometimes gears have to be shifted between musical styles, and each performer's "own story" is a chapter/portion of that overall journey/flow.

Now, stopping the music and trying to rile the crowd with some kind of fanfare is another thing completely, and fortunately I've never seen that sort of stupidity at a psytrance party.

And, well, I won't even get started on "DJs" that don't beatmatch or do any discernible mixing.

HAhahahahhahaha

this is already a classic debate.

So is it Tomato or Tamata? Potato or Potata? Chicken or the Egg?

The answer is 42!

I like Eklypz's orginal post.

I spin a lot of different genres of EDM (as some of you might know) from Techno to House to Breaks to Psytrance and everything in between. If I'm spinning something other than Psytrance, usually I can and will beatmatch my first record with the last DJ's record before me unless they're spinning hardcore or drum n bass. Then I find it impossible.

When it comes to psytrance, however, usually there's a really trippy intro that I like to begin my sets with, so there will be a BRIEF pause in between my set and the last DJ's set, but no more than a second or two.           http://www.psylicious.com

a dj's job/responsibility is to get the crowd of people to dance. if there are two dj's that spin back to back, it'd be paradoxical if there would be a pause between them. simply put, dude isn't doing his job. there should be no more than a 2-3 second pause, max. the next dj should have his cd in the available cdj. if the last track has a long ambient outro, why wait? start the song right away. don’t be gassed, don’t wait for an applause, get the party going.

all headliners deserve a pause before and after they go on. silence is the ultimate intro and outro.

if two artist spin back to back, there should also be a pause. recognition to the artist that just spun and recognition to the artist that’s about to.
the exception should be if the artist have collaborated in the past. for example, if say Kindzadza and Psykovsky are spinning, it would be phat if Kindzadza would mix his song into Psykovsky last, then Psykovsky come back to mix an Osom song to Kindzadzas las, then they both do there thing. it would be hours straight of there music. they are boys, there energy and the crowds energy, it would be great to experience. in fact, it would be a pity if they stopped between each other.

I think if one dj is playing a minor key and then all of a sudden you hear a major key mixed into it! thats more disrupting of my trance then the music stopping and letting the next story teller begin. And trust me us djs are not on the phone saying "hey dude what key is your last track in" cus its already work to put a good set together let alone trying to "work a flow" BULLSHIT! SHUT UP AND DANCE!!! take a break first though....=)

ME personaly I like to do a cartwheel onto the stage first then a short pause then a slow clap (like in the movies) then I pause again and say real loud...... ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBAAAAALL!!! then I play a Fat Albert remix of the "its a small world" track THEN.... a smaller pause THEN I play some PSY... oh yeahh it ROCKS and fuck everything else
