Opinions on buying original

I don't know if this has been covered already...

I have always bought original copies of my media since day 1. In addition to supporting the artists and labels who produce the music I have always liked the idea of studying the cover art, credits, artist bios and so on.

Now that i am taking my craft out of the bedroom and into the party community, I am noticing that other artists tend to "trade" music. I met one individual the other day who had a rather large disc wallet filled with only copied media - not a single original to be found. That person wanted to "trade" for albums in my collection.

I don't realy feel too hot about this, but It's tempting given that those more experienced might be able to help me hone my skills even further. Artists (DJ's) help artist's, correct? I think it's a question of ethics - although I'm very proud of my collection and not inclined to "share". I'm not in residency yet, but I presume sharing among afilliated peoples is acceptable? Is it one of those situations that depends on the circumstances?

Hearing your experiences would be quite helpful. Cheers.

well, gotta say that i respect your way.
and true, it's not just about support but
also about the feeling of owning an authentic
copy with cover art etc. it's a materialistic
view but it supports the music scene. (guys
who want everything for free should try a party with music played on beer bottles snatched from a recycling bin without lights, deco & sound system. THAT'S a free party indeed ).
the dj who you're talking about is a leech earning money (if he's spinning for money)
with ripped material (if it's released music).

Well.It's very tempting off course.
Me personally (Don't hate me for this) sometimes I buy originals and sometimes I copy.
I can't live without getting new music every single week and unfortunately for us is very expensive to buy all cds original!

But still,I don't really beleive that many artists really mind about people copying their albums.Off course they prefer not to but what would you prefer:

Having 100 ppl.listening to your cd (the ones who bouth it original)?
Or else
1000 who copied it?
me personally I would prefer the 1000 so I can play in more giggs.

Well,
Metrolab,
Just listen to your heart mate and what ever you decide don't feel guilty about it.
At least you're honest.

I'd agree with that. I suppose after a few gigs I will figure out what works best for me.

It seems to me that the ethical approach is to buy original as much as possible but I can understand those who are not in a position to spend that kind of money. I purchase once a week on average (usually between 2-4 releases) and this can cost me between $140 - $280 US / month. But I can't really digest more than 3 releases a week anyway because it takes much time to listen, select, and practice with the tracks.

Agree with not taking your originals into any situation where they could become lost or stolen. Don't necessarily agree with building an entire collection for the purposes of gigging with only copied media as 'outolinto' says. But I'm not asking to be the judge and jury - just to get opinions from others. Thanks!!           ELECTRON EYES / MARK-EVAN (NOR. CAL)

Cool topic.. as a Dj, i buy ALL my music original, sometimes i get some promo, and sometimes CDR stuff (which i hate because it just looks so ugly in my CD case around all those original's).. hehe.. I have maybe 2 copied albums in my case that i traded with a friend that bought the original's.. I would have never bought those CD's in the first place because i only was interested in like 1 track from the Cd. I have over 180 original's and counting and i don't plan on burning my whole case just in case i forget one of my cd's at a party. I've heard of people getting there CD cases stolen at parties, and that's a bitch, but i mean, i buy my music for listening purposes and for mixing purposes, so i don't see why i would copy my original's. Vinyle Dj's don't rip the tracks on CD just in case the vinyle gets worn out.. but hey, if you feel you need to burn your originals to CD, by all means go for it, but don't use it as an excuse to hide all the downloaded ripped CD's among your collection.. hehehehe..           "VA - REWIRED" OUT NOW !! well, I have only original records

No, seriously - I mostly use records lately, therefore I buy all the stuf I play. Also, my cd case is not full yet, but its filled only with originals (allright, I admit - I have some copied as well:)).
Also, I dont make backups - I carry my collection with me.

And I think its not expensive, even more if you realise that atleast 80% of djs will rather buy 2-3 grams of charas instead of a new cd.

Well my problem is (And this really pisses me off) that in Malta we do not have any trance records shop so we have to buy all the cds online!
So what should I do buy cds everyweek and then throw them away cause nowadays it's very difficult to find a decent album or compilation so.....

Mind you,I used to buy all my cds originals till a couple of yeras ago but when I realized that out of every 10 albums I was getting 1 or 2 decent ones I realized that it's not worth it anymore.
I have quite a large selection of original cds which i define as crap!

Allways buy my records if itīs not a promo.
But I think the scene donīt release so much interesting music for the moment. I like the real psychedelic music. Itīs hard to find in the recordshops.

I donīt like that people playing mp3īs. It sound shit and it feels shit. Elektronic dance music ainīt only for your ears. Itīs for your body to.

Itīs sad when people work really hard to buy their records and there is some people that just download some tracks and get a lot of gigs with stolen music.

My opinion..           Where is Broccoli??

As someone said in another topics we always say that it's not fair downloading mp3s bacause it's disrespectfull but where do the artists get their software? Cracked software most of it!I produce music too and I got most of my cracked software from 2 very famous artists which I ill not mention their names onloine but you all know them and these 2 famous artists use only cracked software so....It's all a circle.

On the other hand I fully agree that mp3s sound like shit when compared to originals infact when I dowload or copy an album worth having as original I but it original only after I listen to it and like it but.

hello together!
quite interesting theme i would say:
I really like buying the originals! You get the grafic, the credits, all the info about the art and the mastered finished work!If i like the artists music for shure i will buy the original!its one of the most important parts in the "circle" of creating art!if you dont buy the original of the music you love, the label will never see money-in order to this the artist you like, also won't see money and so he/she will never be able to buy for example new synths to create fresh sounds! It's a circle, which should be respected!Maybe i am a bit strikt in this case, but i own a lable,i am music collector (not only trance ) and i love dj'ing!Mixing music and creating a story for the dancefloor is something magic for me!Doing a dj set with only "stolen music" should be forbidden:)-thats crap! And its really something different if you spin an original or an copy! The full quality you will always have only on the original product!
There is some difference when you get a promo directly from the artist. Those cds are really special but not only because of the fact that the music on it is maybe unreleased. No,you also have the handwriting from the artist on it and so those cds are unicates! If i play in my sets unreleased music and pick up the cd from the case,i also have the scene in my head from whom i got it,in which country i got it and so on!This is some feeling you dont have when buying an original!
But anyway and all in all together:copy kills the music you love ,if you believe it or not!
And mp3--ohh my god!mp3 is really the worst!doesnt matter how many kbs!use mp3 for your cellphones ringtone but nothing more!its really the most stupuid way to enjoy music!
Thats all!

A BIG MASSIVE booka and respect to all of you who understand the "circle"!

ps:the "dat mafia" was nice and something special with quality, but the mp3 mafia is a biiggggg shame-phhuuu

i think the topic is underestimated
there is no secret that most (some?) DJs use audio copies for listening and DJing. I'm not talking now about copies that burned from your bought originals. For most DJs it's obligatory to have the freshest material in order to be progressive and play good new music at parties. am i wrong?
i'm sure that many DJs buy/get original CDs later but still don't tell me that your CD cases are full of just bought original CDs.

opinions are welcome!           last.fm/user/jyxx/

I don't like to make generalizations, so I'll speak about what I saw and what I heard at parties.

A lot DJs here at Brazil play mostly unreleased music, and sadly sometimes even mp3s. In the DJs' CD cases I saw, most were CD-R instead of originals. Unless it's near the release date it is almost impossible to have originals with still unreleased music. So yes, from the best of my knowledge most DJs here play from CD-R instead of playing from originals, and they probably won't buy many originals, because it's already "old" when it's released.

On the other hand, there are some guys concerned about playing real good tunes, instead of focusing on playing unreleased stuff. Their cases are more colorful...

Many DJs will asnwer yes... But a good DJ has fresh stuff and also still benefit from older good music, and sometimes when they play a 2002 tune people come asking if it is unreleased, so there's not much difference.

Good music doesn't have expiration date.
