I don't like to make generalizations, so I'll speak about what I saw and what I heard at parties.

A lot DJs here at Brazil play mostly unreleased music, and sadly sometimes even mp3s. In the DJs' CD cases I saw, most were CD-R instead of originals. Unless it's near the release date it is almost impossible to have originals with still unreleased music. So yes, from the best of my knowledge most DJs here play from CD-R instead of playing from originals, and they probably won't buy many originals, because it's already "old" when it's released.

On the other hand, there are some guys concerned about playing real good tunes, instead of focusing on playing unreleased stuff. Their cases are more colorful...

Many DJs will asnwer yes... But a good DJ has fresh stuff and also still benefit from older good music, and sometimes when they play a 2002 tune people come asking if it is unreleased, so there's not much difference.

Good music doesn't have expiration date.

Respect!

agreed wid full-on..
good music never expires but its true dat most of dj's play CD-R as every1 wants to play fresh unrealesed tunes & by the time a album releases a tune is alreday common & old but offcourse some tunes which are too good can be played over years & those have to be from originals..
like for me the albums which i like i buy originals & once which are ok wid only few good tracks r CD-R.

there is no secret that most (some?) DJs use audio copies for listening and DJing. I'm not talking now about copies that burned from your bought originals. For most DJs it's obligatory to have the freshest material in order to be progressive and play good new music at parties. am i wrong?
i'm sure that many DJs buy/get original CDs later but still don't tell me that your CD cases are full of just bought original CDs.

opinions are welcome!

Well jyxx there is a point in your words , djs (usually) trying to play newest and freshest tunes so more often we can see CDRs
in thiere cd cases.

About me - i keep my originals at home from 2 reasons : im also playing mostley from burned cds coz i like to test new tunes that i get from my artist friends on the dancefloor and to add a track from and original cd collection - so i will take the original cd - yes.
2nd reason -180 cd case (originals) better to keep at home and play only what u need from there.

thats why i am using 2 cd cases, 1 smaller for travles and gigs.

There are lot of bad ppl (unfortenatlly) who love to put thiere hands on a dj's cd case.

Peace

i will always use cdr and not original @ party unless its my album or something that i play alot of toonz out of.
just because i play 30 tracks dont meen i have to carry more then 6-7 cd's hey.. simple comfort thingo.

about colorfull case... well i think the music more important then the looks of the case ...

anyhow , dj who gets paid , must buy originals of the artist he play , even if he play the unr stuff still need to show respect.

i buy originals. but i only buy what i really respect and think is quality stuff-
not what some reviewer tells me is a 9 out of 10 so he can make his friend/artist buddy happy or the label guy happy.
i listen to the samples- while it may not be the best quality or the full track- i can find out right away if this is serious production or just some wannabe, or worse yet, a "top" artist in truly terrible decadent form...

so this means i buy only about 1 cd a month...
i usually make cd's if i am dj'ing so i can leave the originals at home.

sometimes there are tracks that people just never realized are on an album...

i think there is too much focus on the "latest" tracks and not enough focus on whether a track is a good song or not... quality is quality... disposable is disposable...

Superhuman! -Thats my keyword....

Allrighty, nice subject all in all... You read about all these labels (and artists) complaining about the sales... It seems quite obvious that alot fewer people are buying fewer cd's from more label's -That's kindda sad, right?

For the whole cdr vs. original, I as an artist can say that WE DO prefer that people buy the cd's !

When i play my rare and chaotic dj sets i carry with me a combination of released and unreleased music on cdr and originals... Keep in mind here that i dont play "pirate-trance" from the web or traders etc.
Some cd's you feel like bringing (because you have too many) other rare and special ones you keep at home behind locked doors...

Buy more music... especially the good stuff           www.parvati-records.com

Hehehe tkz for the reply!
Yeah...its very sad that the number of buyers are going few

but my point its not the pirate...

its this "special cds"..keep them safe!

i can rip an original to cd-r without loosing any db of quality ? (just to keep the original safe at home,in every place have some people who acts in bad faith...they see a different cd in your case and put THE BIG EYE,or by my fault,i can loose too)

now i'm in a good job,so i can buy a couple of cds in a month, what is very rare in brazil...because the shipping from europe to here its VERY complicated...taxes & taxes, specially at psyshop...and the national distribuitors dont have what i need.

I usually buy at beatspace & saikosounds..sometimes at psyshop

i know its a small thing, but my part of helping artists,i'm doing.

i guess you're pretty right here. but this fresh unreleased stuff is mostly for the dj's ego imo, not for the crowd. the majority of the crowd in parties ain't that uptodate and demanding so that it will be dissappointed when a dj only plays released stuff. maybe it just makes one cooler if one has a case full of cdr's with unreleased material to show to the other dj's. sounds like dick comparing to me. sad, innit?

Indeed... anyone can check the dates on the tracks I play in my sets... generally it is all from the last five years or so (except when I'm doing an old school set or a "history of trance" or something)...

As for the question of originals... well, I sure have a lot of them, but I am not too concerned about picking up a few copies here and there. I'm pragmatic. I seek to own everything I really like, and for the compilations where I'm only into a track or two (and they aren't available on Beatport or Cytopia) well, I don't mind picking up a few extras. That being said, the truth is that I very seldom have one of those swap sessions with a colleague... and by the very fact that I buy what I like, I don't even really use most of the copies I end up with. Hey, just being honest. I think it's good to strike a balance with this sort of thing instead of being dogmatic or fanatical about it... I pay my dues
