Im not from the US myself, but I read about the scene there being really small - With events not getting more than 200-400 visitors.

Now I wonder, why do you guys think thats the way it is - After all, its a huuuuuuuuuge city compared to here - And I would think, people would not be "behind" in a city that prides itself of its rich culture and the idea of "the city that never sleeps"..

Was it always that small ?

Hope its ok I started a new topic about it, didnt feel right to derail that other topic

Best wishes

Its the same here in montreal except for huge festivals..

the answer, its probably because there are so many afterhour clubs and parties every weekend.. (the same situation here in Montreal).. The more parties you have, the less people you will get..

on the other hand we hardly have anyone that's not into trance at the parties..... so depends how one views the situation.

you could even say that the energy is always high due to that fact and the vibe is true.
is bigger always better? i dont think so - certainly not in this case..... take for example all of the commercialistic problems everyone else is having in the world... they do not even apply here, is that maybe a blessing in disguise?

all depends on the angle my friend. as a person who used to throw parties in ny city, i can tell you it can be frustrating for several reasons.... artists still want their fees (understandable), venues still want their fees (venues are a problem in my opinion since most have to be clubs or other organized indoor structures). those places are not the most condusive thing to the idea of a trance party, especially when i consider a real trance party in nature somewhere and in the open air. when people dont come in big numbers, an organizer usually loses money, that is very hard.
yet, as a dancer (which i have been enjoying ever since taking the burden of parties off my back) i can tell you that the community is tight. the "regulars" are people who you keep seeing and making connections with at pretty much every event. a much stronger sense of community and its operational mechanics.
trance is not for everyone, the marketing of it has altered the face of it around the globe and imo changed for the worse the idea it was suppose to bring to soceity - this did not happen (yet?) in new york.

From my experience at the US parties its pretty much like how Surrender put it. Bigger need not necessarily be better !! East coast/ west coast the vibes are simple and true.

I agree, especially after my experience in new york this past weekend, even though we may not have the largest scene here, there is definately a true sense of community...its small enough that there are many regulars who I have gotten to know well, yet still big enough that I still meet new people every time I go out.           ~gOa ist nicht nur musik sondern auch eine lebenseinstellung~

First of all, fridays party with MTM and Sun Control Species was awesome-o!
Yes it's a small crowd but you can tell it's people that love, care and really know about this music/culture/WOL. I've been staying in NY for about a month and a half and the parties I've been to have been great.
For instance, size-wise NY's trance scene is teeny compared to Mexico's 5000 ppl parties.... but overthere 80% of the kids are just into it for the drugs, mugging, breaking into the parties, etc....There is no respect for the real trancers at all and they don't really give a shit about the music. And that's a fact. Would you prefer that? I think not.
In NY you can see it's REAL. I truly prefer this kind of thing where you see good vibed people, happy people, peaceful people. Who cares about the amount of people? Sometimes less equals more. And from what I've seen, you have nothing to envy from the mexican parties....except of course the outdoors

So anyways... getting back to your question ...I guess my opinion is that a lot of people here just prefer mainstream/club oriented/hip-hop-booty-shaking music. Being single in the city and going alone to a trance party? I guess most new yorkers would much rather go to a popular club and try to get lucky whereas Trance parties hardly offer that kind of a chance. So yeah, that's my humble 'sex in the city' opinion.          A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

Hmm, a few years back (I guess end of 90's and early 2000-2001), NYC has by far the biggest and most parties in North America, with major artists playing pretty much every weekend. This era seems to have ended around the time Synthetic Sadhus stopped throwing parties. I guess alot of people burnt out/got bored and moved on to something else, hence the smallness of the scene now. Also, the scene in NYC predates the Mexico scene by a good 5-10 years, which would explain the more popular parties in Mexico.

I think there are still parties with major artists about every 3 weeks in NYC. The scene isn't _that small.. If you want really small scenes, try any other North American city (mexico exluded).

<sigh> it could be a <little> bigger.           ..it's just another party..

There are several reasons for the NYC psytrance scene being so small.

1. Lack of venues, in NYC there is the "caberet" law, it means any establisment that serves alchol must have a special permit from the police to allow dancing. So that means out of 10'000 bars and clubs in NYC, there are only 200 places that allow people to dance. Bars get huge fines from the police for having people dancing next to the jukebox all the time.

2. The 21 drinking age. Many venues for Psytrance parties are 21 plus to just go in and dance so alot of people can't attend parties, especially in Manhattan. Thanks to Guiliani and Bloomberg and the NYPD club or bar can get huge fines and jail time from the police for serving someone underage so most of them hire bouncers to check everyone's ID at the door. So alot of people can't bring there girlfriend/boyfriend to parties even just to dance.

3. Parties cost to much. Rents have tripled in the last 5 years for both commericial and residential, and hundreds of clubs and bars have shut down. The bars and clubs that remain have had to start charging alot more for admission and drinks. It used to be you could go to a good club in manhattan for 10-20 dollars cover, now they all charge 30-40 dollars. Same thing with drinks it used to cost 3-4 dollars, now it cost like 6-7 dollars for a beer. In 2000 you could rent a studio apartment in the east village for 1200 bucks, now the rent is more like 3000 dollars a month. Much of Brooklyn, queens, harlem, and New Jersey close to manhattan is also completly unaffordable, so most working class people live at least a 30 minute to 1 hour commute from manhattan. So parties during the week in manhattan have suffered, because it's such a hassle to go back into the city after work.

3. The smoking ban. You can' smoke ciggarettes inside, and you can't drink outside in public. Also, the NYPD has undercover cops that routinely go around arresting people for smoking pot on the street.

4. The word "trance" is a dirty name. There is a whole New York City rave scene (jungle, techno etc.) that has NEVER HEARD OF PSYTRANCE . You mention psytrance, and the ravers think of the horrible eltist eurotrance-pop "trance" that is blared out of the speakers at martini bars where investment bankers go to sniff coke.

5. Commericial parties at commercial clubs in manhattan. Usually it is a commercial promotion company ( usually run by people who did not grow up in New York) will find a club like avalon which is a tourist trap, and find a big name overseas act like astral projection, charge 35 dollars and call it a "trance party". These commercial venues have a huge regular crowd of mostly rich white yuppies from the suburbs that shows up each week because it is a trendy club that is splashed across the pages of every magazine. They don't care about the music or who is playing. They are just there to drink to much, hit on women and pick fights.

P.S. Trance parties in New York City are one of the few places in New York where you can talk with people you don't know. In New Yrok usually when people go out they go out as a group or couple that only talk to each other and do their damnest to ignore other people at the party. At trance parties however, I know everyone in the room and if there is a new person there we do our best to make them feel welcome.          "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security"
