hey guys.. i see the topic went to discussion about specific drug "features"

it wasnt the question! :*)

i think the music is art, like somebody mentioned here and i do not think one must be on drugs to compose psytrance, but i do agree - this genre suits best the atmosphere of "high" mind
just someone gets "high" because of drugs and other one opens his brain by other ways... it depends on the listener and the artist
yet.. its sad to admit: i do not know any human, who likes psytrance a lot and never uses drugs.

How about you? Do you know many people like that?

Of course there is connection with drugs! Always was!

psychedelic trance is strongly connected with psychedelic substances.

techno is with xtc

rock is with alcohol

For any kind of music , whatever you are gonna listen you consume some kind of drug The first drug is the music itself! And Then there is the synthetic or organic drug , which again can be used to enhance you and drive you faster to the limits!
Music = Drug
Music + Substances(Alcohol,tobacco,Xtc,Ketamine) = Drug (Enhanced Version)

Psychedelic trance its a psychedelic experience !

This music uses sound effects , melodies , rhythms to enter to trance , to feel psychedelic similar like for example the mushroom or lsd experiences.

So the combination with certain drugs make this music more powerful and the psychedelic experience stronger.

So you can either enjoy the mild psychedelic effects of the music and have fun , dance like most people do.

Or you can combine music with certain substances where you will go beyond the dance and fun experience , to reach a deeper meaning in the experience.

It is to be a total hypocrite to say that trance music doesn't relate to drugs. I will state myself again - if there was no LSD I hardly believe there was trance as we know it and for sure no goa trance as we knew it.. Moreover the most amazing psy-rock ( some call it art-rock ) was achieved due to different hallucinogenic substances... There is nothing bad to it ppl As one that did it a lot at certain time, today I am sober as my grannie for a long long time and I admit that I wouldn't perceive this music as I did, and I do today if I wouldn't drop some acid! It is not shamefull and moreover, the problem with drugs is not the USE of them but the ABUSE of them. Those that USE them wisely get a lot from it.

Drugs always were and always will be a part of any cultural movement in atleast the last 200 years. Even Lewis Carroll, the writer of Alice in wonderland was Opium addict. Not to mention Jazz that was influenced by Marijuana in the 20's and 30's and (almost) everything that was created in the 60's and forth.
Come on ppl, don't be hypocrate.

Yes, I listen to music, not to drugs.

2) would there be psytrance genre at all?

Would be questions are useless, I believe. There's a nice Isaac Asimov short story about it worth reading. Can't remember the name in English right now.

As for facts- historically both LSD & Extacy played a part in the musical and cultural development of psytrance/Goa trance. No one can deny that.
I do agree with Kitnam that a trance experience need not be one involving drugs, most trance experiences in human history were not involving drugs, though a lot were. But even when they were, drugs were the means, not the end- the trance state and what it achieved were the ends. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case with most ppl experiencing a trance state in our psytrance modern day experiences, which I feel is a shame.

whatever the answer to the original question, it is unfortunate and true that the authorities often convince themself of the converse ie no psytrance = no drugs. stop the parties they think and people won't be taking drugs. bs! obviously.           >>love will tear us apart...<<

How many of you started taking drugs at party’s or in situations where psytrance is related or involved? I didn’t, and I bed most of you didn’t too. Of course drugs are part of the scene. As in every music scene. But Trance was not a music scene when I first went to a party. It was in April 98 and was like we had someplace special to went every month (in Portugal there were only 2 organizers by then, and party’s used to happen in a monthly basis more or less). It was like some ppl had finally found, quoting Timothy Leary, the ancient symbiotic relationship between neurotransmitters, vegetables, and the brains of primates in a wonderful and magical environment. One thing that stroke me the most was the sense of freedom & happiness that everyone was experiencing. Yes, the drugs were different then. I even remember being very sad the first time I saw a guy doing coke at a party.
I've been doing LSD for 15 years. Never had a bad trip. And I used to listen to some very deep and introspective music while I was high, like Joy Division, Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins (Victorialand is a masterpiece, btw) Coil, Diamanda Galas (brrrr....).
I got a respectful and friendly relationship with psylocibine and lysergig acid. Never alone and never when I’m moody or pissed.
So, for me, drugs got nothing to do with party’s or psytrance, they were already being used a long time ago. But I always found the trance scene very similar to those ancient tribal gatherings, were a community used to celebrate live, dancing to hypnotic beats in the heart of mother nature.

PS: Zombi Cocktail, in Portugal techno party’s are loaded with E, coke, alcool, etc.

Zombi: it's free of drugs in Israel only because meth is rare here. And Plastikman is considered the most extreme acid music ever invented (yes, surpasing psytrance). Not MDMA usually (even though that happens a lot too - not with hardcore techno for sure though) - but any music can be music for drugs, it's the people that want the drugs, not the music.

I'll just add a short comment - I believe the major difference between the 'classical' psytrance attitude and that of the music from Finland can be summed up simply by the fact that the classic psytrance movement was built on acidic foundations, and Finland is all about mushrooms (... or so I've heard from a few of the more well known artists from there). And it didn't surprise me that Ticon are the beer-and-pizza type guys either.          http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222
