Geist is amazing. it has great 'resample from host' options - it can also resample itself.

Just watch some of their geist tutorial/overview videos and you'll go apeshit.

Agreed. Thanks for bring this ti my attention. It seems to be doing all the things I like in Machine...and the price of it with the M-Audio Trigger Finger is cheaper than the Machine.

Peace out.

?
You can record audio into it and drop audio into it. Unless you mean something else?

I am talking about when used as VST
yes you can record audio into when u insert it as machine effect into a DAW channel, but than you cant trigger it (at least not in Studio one)

I talk about that you press one button to enable sampling and being immediately abble to play the sample with drag and drop.

In Geist it is nice but not optimal,
1. open the sample tab
2. record
3. open that !tiny! popup and select the mapping mode.
4. Play           http://facebook.com/ansolas

Maschine will have the advantage that the Controller is specially designed for the software.           http://facebook.com/ansolas

no ones saying the maschine isn't good. By many accounts its awesome.

However, its expensive. $600 for that controller and software is IMO a little much, but then again I bought Omnisphere for $500 and that doesn't even come with a controller so maybe its not that bad.

However, Geist is much cheaper and very fully featured - and I don't see how you can honestly say its not 'optimal'

I don't think either of them are more 'optimal' than the other - they're slightly different products with overlapping feature sets. I'm sure there are some things that maschine does better, and I'm sure there are some things that geist does better.

Btw the Trigger Finger got terrible reviews regarding its velocity sensitivity. Speaking from the perspective of someone whose first two midi controllers were M audio gear...its pretty bad.

Do the knobs/keys/faders etc work? yeah ,they do. But they certainly don't feel inspiring to work with and the build quality is cheapy plastic crap.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I have heard of bad rep with the m-audio gear, but I still use an Oxygen midi controller (in the studio and in live sets) that I bought for 50quid 5 years ago and has been through very dusty outdoor festivals and indoor humid (as in beer splashes) mucky clubs and thrown about in airports in my backpack and it still performs to this day as it did when I first bought it.

Indeed it is cheap its plastic crap, the feel of the keys and knobs is toy like, but it still works (knock on wood).

Peace out.

Oh I agree that they are durable. Both of my maudio products still work just fine and the first one I was definitely not kind to.

I'd rather go with something that's both durable *and* nice to use though. An Akai drum pad is probably what I'd look at, as their products are both durable and have a really nice tactile feel to them.

They are 4x the price of the trigger finger though.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Don't get me wrong, Geist ist *awesome* and I bought it at version 1! ...but compare to a Roland MV8000,
Sampling (sample , cut, map, play) is much slower and less fluid.
If you have never worked with it you obviously have no comparison.
It is just funny that software has in some points a worse usability as hardware, which is in most cases compared to software inferior and limited.

~~

I tried the Machine Software yesterday again in conjunction with
StudioOne:
In DAW Host Mode you can't select any soundcard input,
you can just sample if you insert the Maschine FX into a channel.
(Gesit has Spitter which can be the sampling source of any Geist instance loaded, useful)

~~~
Something else awkward is fine tuning in Maschine/Battery:
Imagine... ,you have just sampled and mapped a sound.
The next step might be fine tuning.
To do this you have 2 choices:
1.) Play with the first hand the sample on the pad
use the second hand to move the mouse (tune knob)
use tghe third hand to press shift to be able to fine tune.
2.) open the sequencer paint in a sequence and than shift - fine tune
Approach 2 is for me more natural.
In Geist you have a dedicated fine tune knob
~~~

Not Maschine related either but:
Reason 6 has a very nice approch when it comes to sampling/resampling, it is just 2 clicks from sample/mapping to play.           http://facebook.com/ansolas

Not to derail this topic completely, but I'm just curious how you guys work with tools such as Geist and Maschine when you're producing psytrance. Do you get much use of it producing psytrance, or does this type of tools lend itself better to other genres, perhaps with less-straight drum patterns? (time signatures etc) Pros and cons, anyone? I'd very much appreciate if you could share your opinion and in what respects the use Geist/Maschine fits your workflow.

I'm interested in Geist and can definitely see its potential. I'm just not sure how much use I could get out of it producing psytrance.

i dont see how it would be more or less useful for psytrance as compared to other genres. I use it for psytrance but im still learning it.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I think psytrance could really do from some techno style drum programming and I don't mean just the classic swing rimshots.

I have a release on Kox Box's new label "Tago Mago" with a Disco Vandals remix of Frank's & Illinton's "Night Owls"

So I got a chance to see the layering involved with making the beats. None of them has mentioned what they used, but some of them stuff I can really picture working a treat on the style of psytrance I make.
Basically, anything with pads to assign samples on, and trigger/jam on top of a 4/4 track, can only be a good thing.

Peace out.

i use geist for all style, it give me what i like in ableton for drum programing but with better sound quality and into logic , it also have lot of great features , to get a overview check youtube fxpansion tutorials.
i use it a lot to program layers and kits..it also great in a creative way.
coupled with mashine controller it s the bomb but expensive.

for drum programing it s the best soft by far IMO

I actually resample and sample alot on the fly while playing with effect or other lines with infinite echo or reverb.
After resampling you have some very juicy samples but full control
