i just fiddled around with a ms-20 mini for half an hour today.
wanna know some pros and cons?
pros:
it's been a while since i had the pleasure to manipulate a ms-20 but as far as my memory serves me correctly the mini sounds 95% as awesome as the original (-5% cause it's the mini! ).
cons:
the knobs are shabby and waggly + hard core fine tuning/adjusting is also difficult cause the knobs are small and too loose for my taste.
the noise level is regrettably high especially on vco2 (which has f.e. the ring modulator).
i hoped it's just this particular model but my friend told me it's the same with the monotrons etc. as well. even my old analog synths seem silent compared to it!
if you like playing the kb then the smaller kb on the mini is a let down. i have relatively thin fingers and i can tell you it needs some getting used to.
conclusion:
they got the sound pretty much right but got stingy on the way and the end result is a disappointment.
i think you might get these in a few years 2nd hand for 300-400€ and the old ones will still be in demand           "no one ever sweats on a plug-in" -moby

interesting, much different review than this guy gives it:

on his demos I don't hear noise in the signal?            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

dunno about the noise but for the rest Outolintu description fit what i have read from guys who used it.

second hand it s sure will be a bargain but if the knobs are not solid not sure it will last long wihtout issu.

don t like knob that feel cheap at all, and bad construction quality but at this price...i might still get tempted later this year.. will try this and boomstar probably.. and see..or eurorack..or second Xs or..i have no idea of what i really need yet..

Yeah had heard this exactly from a mate who tried one. Said the knobs were absolute crap & the keyboard was really mini.

I'm sticking with Foundation 2.0 for now, the mini brute intrigues me but I'd rather save for some more modular gear or the Prophet 12.

Nord Lead 4 would possibly grab me although I can get the Lead 2X rack for a cheap price here.           Cuntus Maximus.

man if you are with modular, why bother with mono like this, just get a korgasmatron filter with some great vcos .. you will have a deluxe ms20..

for korg's sake i hope it's a flaw in a single item. but i bet they've cut some corners on the inside too to afford that price.
the hissing noise became obvious when i used vco2 only. it wasn't a "in your face" gritty lead sound but a softer bass sound. at times the hissing was really annoyingly loud...
in a nut shell:
it sounds like a synth but seems to be built more like a toy.

all i'm saying is:
try it out and test it (the one you're going to buy) before buying it!

didn't people complain of knob quality and stuff on the original as well? and didn't the original retail for like $400 or something? I mean, it was the late 70s early 80s so that's more than now but..idk

I have already paid for half of it, but on the extremely rare chance that I don't like it I'll be able to sell it

could be the unit you demo'd was bad, that happened to me when I went and demo'd a minibrute. sounded shit and noisy to me, got assaulted on reddit for saying so - people were very upset lol!

the knobs of the ms-20 are great compared to the ones on the mini. they are bigger and they don't wobble on their sockets and the overall knob quality is better.
the similarity is that they feel also a bit too loose when turned .
i like knobs to have a tiny amount of friction rather than turn too quickly if you catch my drift...
about the minibrute: no matter which one you pick up cause it just sounds like shit or rather it sounds fake (atleast to my ears). i guess i'll stay away from reddit then...
i hope the mini you've ordered works fine and that you can enjoy it for a long time
it IS a fun synth and certainly beats every other new monophonic analog synth in its price range!

I can't understand why it's so hard to manufacture a synth with solid sturdy knobs!?
That would be one of my top priorities to get them knobs smooth and stable.
The Nord Lead's are great, it adds to the whole experience of playing and tweaking the synth.

It's a matter of cost. The smoother the potentiometer rotation cycle, the more the cost goes up for that particular component. In the end, it would be nice to have pots like these which are buttery smooth, no wobble around the bushings, and an extremely high rotation lifetime but the cost to the consumer would increase the cost of that synth a lot more than Korg is selling it for.

http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/P260T-D1BS3CB100K/987-1335-ND/2408912?cur=USD

On average, the way pricing is generally calculated for devices like this is by multiplying the component costs by 5 to 10 times to arrive at the the final cost. For example, let's say they used that part listed above and they got each potentiometer at $1 each. When it comes time to price the synth for retail, the pots alone would add anywhere from $180 to $360 to the cost of the synth. Now let's say they use a pot that costs $0.10 instead. The price would increase anywhere from $18 to $36 instead.

The front panel components are always the most expensive part of any synth and will also be the place where a manufacturer will attempt to save money to keep retail prices within their target range. The analog parts are fractions of pennies compared to the front panel. Korg is a huge company and they will aim for the highest profits they can get from a device. I assume they will have to skimp somewhere to meets their margins.
