I´m buying an Audio Interface and being a very happy E-Mu customer with my 1212 PCI i was planning to get the new E-MU 406 USB...

Is it worthy to spend the extra $ in a Motu or RME? My setup usually uses only 2/3 hardware devices connected to the PC (synth, compressor, effects)....

As i said y E-MU 1212 is amazing...zero problems and zero latency!

Any recommendations besides the E-MU for 500euros tops?

thanks for the input...

RME babyface.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

Hi Login,

the RME costs double the price of the E-MU....is it really worthy to go the extra mile for the Babyface or the Motu UltraLite?

What about Focusrite or Presonus?

I have a fireface UC and it was a big improvement from my focusrite saffire USB.

I can have a latency at 256 samples of less than 6 ms.

That being said I feel all interfaces below 300 USD have very similar performance, once you go up to 500 and higher differences become bigger.

RME has very very good drivers, the performance is great and the included software makes a total bliss to work with hardware or external audio(if you have to do it). Also the pre amps sound very clean.

Then are you on a PC or mac? I had read that motu's doesnt have good performance on pc via USB.

I say you order the motu, try it, if you dont like it go for the RME.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

dont you have firewire = more choices.

ive had the emu1212 too, and i didnt like it.
now i have this thing http://www.thomann.de/gb/echo_audiofire_4.htm

and its perfect... i checked out the stats of other interfaces in this price-area and the recommended echo won the race.

the babyface seems very expensive.

(the echo also have latency at 256 samples of less than 6 ms)

Looks promising...

I never worked with Firewire before and i'm not sure the Laptop i'm buying has that capacity...it's a Lenovo ThinkPad L412 i5....the specs dont show any firewire connection.

What was the issue with your 1212? I have mine for 3 years and zero issues...my homestudio is basic but still with up to 3 devices connected through the card i never had an issue nor recognizable latency! I think emu really gives value for money that's why i was thinking about the new emu 0406 usb...

i never saw such a shitty software before the emu1212m.
it starts with the installation and ends with the most crapy driversoftware...
the sound was ok (i didnt record with it).

i guess you will travel or do DJing, otherwise i see no reason for a laptop.

i dont know about the emu0406. what do you want to do? recording, just using vst´s?

I agree the installation is somewhat crappy but i never had issues with the drivers...guess i'm lucky!

You're right, im getting a laptop because i start to play more and more and i'm tired of asking for my friend's laptop who is tired of having loads of awkward software in his laptop but also i want to abandon my current studio setup (with desktop) and work only or maily from the laptop...

i want to run through the interface my synth, multi-effects single rack and maybe a compressor (havent decided if i'll keep the compressor or not...it's expensive as hell)

Is it ok to use a USB/Firewire adapter? I'm affraid that it will lose performance....

personally i wouldnt use an adapter on your main interface.

so in this is case (USB) i also would get the babyface.
check this out:
http://www.rme-audio.de/download/sheets/babyface_e.pdf

but again, if you have not buyed the laptop yet,
think about a firewere solution. you will save some
money with it.

I think it's cheaper to upgrade the Lenovo and get the T410. This one shows a 1 x IEEE 1394 (FireWire) - 4 pin FireWire ....and it costs only 150 euros more...This is the correct interface to connect a Firewire device right?

I was impressed with the Echo Audiofire... though i'm a bit affraid of latency issues. The babyface costs 600euros and i can get here the Echo for 295euros. Moreover the better Lenovo has better hard-drive (7200 rpm) and better RAM technology...

I think i'll give it a try, i can always return/exchange the interface within 2 weeks if i dont like it....

cool, im also planing a studio for my friend right now,
and the return/exchange option is essencial

Damn! I was so much into this setup (Lenovo + Echo 4)but the Firewire is really for 4 pins and it's not easy to find a pc laptop with 6 pin firwire...

I can always get an Express Card for Firewire 800 (6 pins) i just hope it wont affect anything...the Lenovo has this option!

My main priority is to have a stable setup so i can focus of composing/producing...i really have no interest in solving technical issues or finding the best available solutions for a certain problem...

4 pins do not support power.
the echo is powered by the 6 pin firewire,
or u can use its 12V power
http://www.thomann.de/de/media_bdbviewer_AR_109015.html?image=8

there exists such a thing:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Firewire-Cable-IEEE-1394-1-8M/dp/B000747OHQ

but i dont know if this solution would work.
as i read, the only difference from 4 to 6 pins is the supported power supply.

IEEE 1394 = frewire 400
IEEE 1394b = firewire 800
the echo audiofire 4 works with the 400, i dont know if 800 works.

the additional 2 pins in the firewire port are just for bus powering..tho, its not a good idea to run the echo bus powered , i actualy had some issues with artificial sounds when i just moved my mouse and stuff..then i used the power supply and all problems were gone..

i now use a fireface 400 with a firewire 800 to 400 adapter since my macbook only has firewire 800 and its stable..no issues here..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-
