New concept for Festivals: an idea worth pondering

Hello everyone!!

When I was sitting at a campfire at the Wonderland festival last week, I had an idea, but since I've never been active in the organization of a Festival, I would like to hear what you guys think about it. Perhaps it even already exists, or has in the past…

Here it is:

When I worked as a chief animator in Holiday Resorts in Greece, we used to do a minidisco for the children every night: we would welcome all parents with their young children to the disco and play happy children dance music with the disco lights on. The kids absolutely LOVED it, and of course the parents were sooo happy to see their kids sooooo happy. This was only 30 minutes every night, but it was the highlight of the day for these kids, often the highlight of the entire holiday.

Now, imagine a psy-festival, great location, beautifully decorated…
Wouldn't it be nice to write letters to some of the local schools and invite groups of children for a small minidisco in the afternoon before the festival begins that night?

We could say they are welcome from 18:00 to19:00 for example, free of charge, the parents can come along, and the bar offers no alcohol until way after the minidisco?
Festival guests can move to the side to clear the dancefloor for the kids, which could play with some mini-poi or get face-painted as little fairies? People can perform with poi, devil sticks, staffs, juggling or whatever… We can even have little games being played here and there, do puppet shows and sell "Minidisco CD's" or other souvenirs. Also, you would make a bit of money selling coffee, tea or drinks to the parents.
The kids will have the time of their life, and the (local) parents will experience the athmosphere of our scene, generating greater respect and tolerance for future festivals.
Psy-artists could try to make songs especially for the minidisco - a new style of trance especially for children!!! (not dark or too psychedelic)

Imagine: Electric Universe - Fairytale Forest (minidisco rmx):)

Of course the festival guests have to show their best behaviour when parents and kids are on festival grounds, but I'm sure we can manage that together!!!

What do you think???

PS: Here is a song I made for the minidisco!!! Not very psy…

How come there are 40 views and only one reply? Are these just people visiting the site but they aren't registered?

The idea isn't THAT bad is it?

why is it such a bad idea?

many festivals have kid´s area and stuff like that.. why not make a disco for them, so they can have their own fun?

But if something like this is announced I'm sure most people can understand, and wait with an hour with taking the drugs. This is why you do it only before the Festival. Also I think there will be enough sober guests around to keep disrespectfull drugged out people in line.

In the worst case, we could grant the children acces first, and after that the normal guests.

Besides, it's about time people start to think more open minded about drugs, and if they see what we "drug addicts" can organize, we might be able to destroy most of the negative stereotypes people have about us.

Imagine an off duty cop watching his child dance in total happyness - and we offered this oppurtunity for free!!!

In my opinion it's worth investigating these possibilities - especially if we ever wish to see positive change in this world.

uh most people are on drugs 24-7 while at a festival.. sure you could do a kiddie disco at the kids area.. but why on the mainfloor? it would defenitly not be something i am waiting for while attending a psyfestival. if you'd like to get positive attention from the locals i'd do it in another way..

and btw.. who do you think would like to make the kidsdisco versions of their tracks.. hehe .. just wondering.. dont think skazi will help maybe im..

The idea itself is fine but pls, be serious ... this is not possible for the present in most of the countries in Europe... u r talking for the children and their parents.. and what about the guests of the festival ? This is not an opera or ballet festival.. there're some substances (liquids, pills etc) still forbiden for good or bad by the laws...           ---

I guess some of you guys didn't read my post all the way:

-BEFORE festival starts
-respectfull sober guests keep an eye out for disrespectfull drugged out guests - how many can there be?
-give psy-scene better image to outside world & show people what co-operation, respect for nature and open-mindedness can achieve. Also, people will compare our festivals to the "festive" events organized by our governments/companies, and see that decorations are much nicer than big flags of sponsors.
-not all drugs are bad: Coffee, chocolat, cigarettes, alcohol: ALL legal drugs. What about medicine? People need to think about this stuff, but if they aren't shown an example of course they'll always stick to their preprogrammed opinions on stereotypes.

Besides, you guys act as if I'm proposing to take the kids through a tour of Brooklyn or Iraq... Do you have this little faith in the people within the Goa trance scene? Also, it doesn't need to be perfect at the first try, we humans can improve and learn from experience you know...

If this would become a standard festival procedure I believe many artists would make at least 1 child friendly trance song: it's a fun creative challenge - I don't know Skazi personally, but I don't see why they wouldn't give it a shot when this thing becomes a hit.

Of course you people who say it will never work could be right, but it's much easier to say that (without too much argumentation) than to try and think how this could become possible.

Regarding kids at a festival, I have a story for you about this African festival, which turned out to be one of the greatest events I ever attended! Here goes...

Halfway through the 10 day Solar Eclipse Festival in Zambia (Solipse 2001) the organizer (Fish) invited some local orphans to sing for the trance crowd. I estimate they ranged from 5 to 12 years. They came to the main stage at the end (!) of a day filled with psychedelic frenzy. Of course they had no parents with them, but there were some teachers or nurses present, and someone who conducted the singing.

At first they were staring at the crowd with their big brown African eyes. Then they started to sing, while their chant was recorded. The DJ then played the recorded chant over the sound system. You should have seen the looks on the orphans faces! Their dark stare converted into sheer joy. They probably didn't even know such a thing was possible. The DJ proceeded to put a beat under it, and mixed in a track with bagpipes (happy, though not very African). The kids and the trancers now danced together. Some kids were still shy, while some other kids were clearly more outgoing and gladly danced around with the freaks.

Probably their experience was particularly overwhelming because they never saw whites before, and now there were some thousands freaking out before their very eyes, some of them inviting them to dance. The crowd loved it, I could remember some women crying. In any way, it was an experience I'll never forget. Afterwards the kids went on to the bar where they were offered ice cream and soft drinks.

Well now, what to make of this. I can't deny that I had some strange feelings when I witnessed this scene. I couldn't help feeling the kids were getting exploited in some strange way. I mean, they were the obvious targets of empathy for even the most Hedonistic trance hippie: Orphans, probably many of them with HIV/Aids, in a bankrupt country in the warm heart of Africa, with very bad prospects of a happy future in the 'Western' sense of the word. Besides they are too cute to describe. Anyone who has ever played with kids in Sub Saharan Africa knows what I mean.

Probably these feelings of exploitation are a very European thing. I guess they did made a lasting impact on the crowd present and created awareness among the party goers for their meager looking future. But what probably matters most, in the end the kids themselves did enjoy it. They heard their own voices over a big sound system for their first (and last?) time of their lives, with a dance track mixed in and saw a huge crowd of freaks dancing to it and smiling to them. They were rewarded with kids currency (ice cream and so on) and I believe Solipse donated some money to the orphanage, although the festival didn't run a profit. (Solar Eclipse Festivals rarely do, but that’s another story).

I know this is not quite the kind of kids involvement you are aiming at, but I thought I'd share this with you

@ Flabbergast:

Thanks for sharing this inspiring story, it must have been a profound experience to witness something like that! These sort of things might just happen more often 5 years from now. I sure hope so!
