i must be the only one that feels you dont need a sub ( specially for a big speaker like adam a22)

in a normal bedroom, speakers with at least 7" woofer are more than capable of producing enough bass for your average psy.
in my 4x7 room dynaudio bm5a are doing just fine.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

it can be a plus or a nightmare if not well placed and depending the room but a bigger woofer deliver less distortion i think .
on a good sub the sound can be way clearner down there and flater dependong the monitors used and if the room is ok ,but it s a bonus yes one could do wihtout but still better to have the option to turn it on/off. for many electronic producers a sub is must have ,s it show more the picture of pa system than nearfield monitoring, there si so much power down there than the dynamic range can extend a lot with the sub for me it result in more space in the mix and bigger sound. with a monitor that cut at 50 /60 hz in a room than dont have peak in low end, it s like missing 1/3 of the dynamic range from my experience ,everyhting will sound compressed and small, it make it hard to make big sounding mix for me

it could be a reason dunno but i think in psytrance a lot of mix sound tin maybe cause the guys hear nothing about what is going on in the first octave, they balance their track having no idea they are missing one octave of the spectrum maybe,in dnb and techno sub are way more popular and in both style they use more the lower octave resulting in mix that are balanced with more dynamic range and space and sound bigger, though in psytrance i m not sure it s very comparable, it s way more tricky to have good low end down there and good balance of the kick and bass energy in the low...it seems many don t like to have too much energy down there too

Update : went and compared Adams a 7x, Adam a8x, genelec8020, Dynaudio bm6. The a7 x are identical in the highs to the a8 x..., same tweeter, I recommend a8x if you don't have a sub, since I have a sub, I bought the Adam A7X, the clear winner. Colin recommended to listen to all speakers with vocal music, classic music and electronic, a very very good advice I might add, the Adams are after all nit only the clear winners in all three categories, they also cost less . I can't wait to set them up in my studio on Friday, and I feel like I have birthday !

My advice: get Adams, save until you have the $$ it IS well worth it !

you can t really know just by listening the one that will give you the best mix in your room it could be the one you didn t like much who know, all these monitors can work great for some producers ,even the crappy genelec 8040 everyone bash , some guys have great production using these

If you talk about production, I produce on Behringer Truth 2031 A... Really crappy speakers... I know...

A lot of that has to do with knowing the limitations of your speakers and developing the ability to compensate for their shortcomings, the reason I opt for Adam A7X is that they seem to be crystal clear, not necessarily flattering but clean, meaning I can hear out flaws in the mix very nicely. The Genelec seem to be very muddy in the mid range, Dynaudio seemed to have similar issues.
