Hey guys, im looking for my first pair of studio monitors. I am quite picky with speakers and want some advice from psytrance connoisseurs as there is no shops around me to test any.
I have a budget of around au$700

I also need to know what size speaker you recommend. I am leaning towards the 8" because of usually not needing a sub and they are still loud, which is what i want.. but still want pristine sound quality. I mainly will be using them for for producing zenon style dark minimal prog psytrance, and minimal techno.

Here is a picture of the dimensions of my room.

Thanks in advance

Hey,

you have many demands and small budget

There are many solutions to your problem, but first things first:

-Is your room treated?

-How are you positioned in the room?

-Do you own a pair of headphones?

1st solution: in your budget range, is to get a pair of tannoys http://www.thomann.de/gb/tannoy_reveal_601a.htm

Solid monitors, best you can get in that price range! They have 6" woofers, so this means that you can seat closer to them, and have them on lower volume, so you are triggering the room resonances less (room nodes). The positioning is important in this case, make a research! Or buy SOS: The Studio SOS Book! Good info in there!

And get a beyerdynamic DT 880 pro http://www.thomann.de/gb/beyerdynamic_dt880_pro.htm

Extremely honest headphones, if you pair them with a good Headphone preamp you will get even better results!

This combo will work!

I am assuming that you already have a decent sound card!

2nd: Event monitors! (close to your price range)
http://www.thomann.de/gb/event_20_30_bas_left.htm

This scenario requires a moderate to good sound proofing of your room, and will cost you time for research, and money to build! It will get you out of the bedroom level, into more semi pro listening environment!

3rd: Adam a7x + sub! will not comment on this, i dont like them but they are popular among psytrance producers!

It is only my opinion that this is the best that your money can buy in 2013!

thanks for your reply bro.

i was meant to ask that, where do you reckon i am would be best places in my room?

I am in the process of finding a 2nd hand rme babyface.
the next thing after monitors will be acoustic treatment.

I can get some event 20/20 that are more in my price range.. have you listen to them are they decent? some people say they prefer over the 20/30.

and i only got some cheap akg k44 headphones.

For that price you could get some KRK monitors, they are really good ones!

best solution is go to a shop and buy what sounds best. and when you found something you like ask them to try them at home before you buy them.
believe me you will be unsatisfied otherwise.

from my experience: 8" is to big such a small room.

i'd suggest these:
http://www.thomann.de/de/eve_audio_sc205.htm
or maybe a size smaller...
i don't like the adam sound and i don't like the krk sound, dynaudio is also quiet thin to my ears (hififorum calls them dünnaudio=thinaudio in german)

cheers

I can only suggest the rookit krk.
For the price, i think they are the best.
Of course they're not like 1000 € ones, but still very good and for a young producer its still a scop

or the alesis http://www.alesis.com/m1activemkii
The're would probably be the ones i would buy now if i have not had the krk.
I like the alesis a bit more because the seem to be a bit nearer to a linear output, also the bass is more warm (good for noisia stuff) than the krk. But KRK has a more direkt bass, which i dont like PERSONALLY that much after 3 years

KRK is fine! with every setup what's more important is how much you know them anyways. using the same volumes (like a preset) to listen to music helps develop some references faster.

It's all down to taste

ahhhh this choice is soo hard.. i think im just going to wait and do the couple hour drive to the nearest music store when i can.

although the event 20/30's are on sale atm for $799 a pair.. has anyone had any experience with these AND the 20/20's.. is it worth the extra money for the 30's?

No chance (with any monitors) to get a quality sound without treating a room of such measures.
8" is ok for that room with treatment, 7" or even less (maybe with a sub) could work even better.

I'd go to a shop and hear/compare there what you like.
Than go back put that monitors in 60°-60°-60° triangle to your ears as the center sweetspot on that wall down in your draft, so that you provide the longer way= 5m distance for the wave to spread out.

Than good idea would be to download the REW 5.0 eq roomwizard, create a calibration file and make some messurings with a linear mic (there is some linear behringer around 50 € on thomann, good enough for measures) to see where your problems in the rooms are (in what frequency range and where) as well as the room modes.
Than maybe dig deeper into helpful articles about diy building low and mid absorbers and especialy bass traps. And absorbers for the corners. That way you can improve really your room accoustic.
Good monitors are not really that much worth in an untreated room. Good headphones before a treating of room could be good idea.
You could close the curtains if you have some at the window and want all a bit cleaner.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

event any time that pricerange. i dont like equators d series, though their q range might work (never heared them). anyways not my cup of tea, i´d prefer the event 20/30, 3 way at its best for those bucks!! will get them myself soon i got the bucks

i totally agree on dynaudio gear beeing far too thin, dont like them. even if a lot of ppl swear to krk.... dont like them either. adam beeing far overrated, just like the dynaudios, dont like them. for genelecs 2 way systems, they sound somehow good and got some good response, anyways they seem to be not that true to my ears, comparing on different systems (higher pricerange). i like their 3 way systems but that pricerange i´d go for different stuff....
one thing i wasnt able to check until this very moment but always wanted to give a listen is the tannoy precision 8d.... anyone familiar with them? i know slightly off that pricerange and hard to get .... sorry if too offtopic ^^

bare in mind this is just my humble opinion, which might be provoking to one or the other

7"-8" is just fine with your room imho.

i wrote some topic few years ago for a cheap solution for room treatment. it will improve your room acoustics a lot at pretty much no costs, anyways just some cheap solution which for sure wont replace proper room acoustic gear. but one thing´s for sure, it will help a lot if you spend all your money on monitoring system now and cant afford traps and panels and such, even selfmade....
had a look for the topic, cant find it, so feel free to read it over at triplag forum.

http://triplag.com/4room/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6652

its really just some basic improvement you can get for pretty much no bucks except for the beer and maybe rent for mic&cables n such.... a good store wont take any rent for the stuff, just your ID and a deposit maybe, which you´ll get back after returning their stuff. its years old, anyways works fine....

hope kinda helped, cheers           FUCK GENRES, LOVE MUSIC!!!!

I´m not saying acoustics don´t matter, because they do so very much! Having said that i have mixed tracks in a horrible room that was empty save for the actual studio gear and had a very distinct decay that was audible as reverb. The music in question was the GOW part of the Tits on Fire and that turned out rather great. Point is if you really want to make music you just start by chucking in a pair of speakers and having a go at it. DIY acoustics are cheap and cheerful and can be just as good or better than store bought solutions. Look up how to make broadband traps. It should not take very evolved carpentry skills to get something put together that´ll work great. Oh and being biased i´d suggest a pair of Adam´s (without sub!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Agreed, except for the "without sub", get a sub with your A7X, use it on a very low volume setting and you will see why when you a/b it ;-) you will be way happier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for the replies guys.
i wish i could afford adams, especially with a sub, heard some pretty good reviews. But i think i might just go the event 20/30's. More in my price range.
Or do you reckon i should get the 20/20's and put the extra money into a better soundcard?
