Didn't see this tompic.

Nataraja Festival:

Craziest festival I have ever been too.

my story:

I arrived in Pohkara before the festival expecting pre-parties or at least a chance to camp out at the location and settle in. I get to the Himalayan star and only one guy, the organizer is there. We had a laugh about my punctuality as it was like 7am. The exodus to the festival begins 4 days later, I miss the first bus and have to wait another 24 hours, I went to Shiva on the lakeside, which is a great destination for all your chess and rambling conversation needs. The bus was maybe 5 or 6 hours of hypnotic nepali folk music and Booming all the way. Then there was a rope bridge crossing and another 30 min jeep ride. EPIC

I get there and set up camp, meet some cool people and run into an old friend from burningman and california. There is a good but totaly strange atmosphere as the local villagers meet their new temporary neighbors from another dimension. The chai shop plays terrible cheesy club music and tiesto until about 11pm.

The location is Superb, litrerally we are partying ontop of a bald mountain surrounded by terraced gardens and clouds. Their is free clean water, no showers, trench toilets and a small group of locals selling snacks for a reasonable price. The puja ceremony was well attended by local children and old folks. Suddenly they get blasted by new school goa played by yeti. It's a surreal site, dozens of little kids and old folks shimmying and bouncing around to trance. the music gets more intense and floor clears as the night goes on. I leave during kerlivins set, the music was awesome but I was exhausted. Too many drunk bro's dancing around me and asking me how to hit on chicks. Some of my friends got their a few things taken from their site, there was absolutely no security and anyone could just walk in from numerous trails.

day 2 - The festival is swarmed with people, probably 150 paying attendents, and like over 1000 local people from anywhere with 30 km. The energy is crazy, droves of old women squating on the dance floor, Trancers camping in the shiva temple. Much of the day I spend hanging out in my camp with some fine french folk and playing games with the local kids. I head to the dance floor as Loopus starts playing, His set is amazing, funky psychedelic disco and new wave sounding beats with tripped out break downs and melodies cropping up. Very cosmic funk. Lots of kids and families dancing and grooving to the lasers and beats. Then my friend Johan (Konvndrvm) plays, his style is super intense fast and pretty much clears the floor, but I enjoyed hearing some absolutely insane tracks(select project's golden brown). Saikozaurus plays, Samadhi plays. I wander off the dance floor and am harassed by swarms of drunk, aggressive young men from the sorrounding village and pohkara. One db keeps playing a flute in my ear. The festival has turn into a endurance test, with trancers scattered all over the harsh terrian. The night seems to collapse on itself, finally dawn arrives. There was some violence around the dance floor in the night becuase of somebody didnt pay or something, I didnt see it but I heard alot about it. Transdriver plays his music to a largely empty dance floor. What was cool about this festival was that you could comfortible listen to music from a number of adjacent hills, kinda like the whole mountain range was a giant acoustical experiment. the nutcracker theme echoing off Valleys and hills at sunrise = EPIC

The next day was filled with making ballon animals with kids and Holi festivities. It was really a unique experience to celibrate this holiday in this village, there was a performance by a local dance group and ofcourse some pigment getting smeared around.

The uneasy vibes seemed to have quelled by night fall the fest seemed to find a nice groove, Gido played a nice twilight groovy set, ekoplex played a very atmospheric groovy set.

I am pretty sure johan(konvndrvm)and Kiyanna played after atriohm and then maybe Arseniq, if you were wondering. I am pretty sure Trold was a no show. I went to sleep at some point late in the night and when I woke up pretty much everyone was gone... which was a total mind fuck. I ended up staying at the site another day and helped break it down. I am pretty sure the orgs lost some serious $. I ended hanging on the back of a jeep to get back, it took about 9 hours bc the suspension broke. The follwoing days there were a few small after parties in Pohkara where samadhi, gido and others played.

All in all this festival was one of a kind and probably will not/could not happen again. No regrets at all, but from a professional point of view this was a disaster. I mean I think everyone lost $ on this on, except one person...

I am sure I will get flamed for this long post.

be strong, thnx

ya one fight broke out there was one guy without a band which means he din't pay,i believe they asked him to pay and he refused, they were all drunk so only god and alcoholic violence knows whatever happened there.

The locals were dancing and being idiotic early on in the night but it was good after 11:00 pm onwards.

Thanks for clearing that up about who all played, the set's after atriohm were really good ..... the music was just great though awesome lineup with enough diversity.Totally agree on the echo around mountains that location was just magic with that huge moon and clear orange sunrise.           "Whoever said the best things in life are free... obviously grew their own bud"

Hey whatsup everyone.

Been waiting to chime in on this one, figured now is the time.

Nataraja was a great experience for my wife Kyana and I.

Yeah it had a lot of negativity attached to it, despicably low vibrations, mass confusion, no payment, poor sound equipment, no chill floor, NO FOOD, numerous fights, No tent provided, highly intruding locals whose presence was from start to end, who also stole items from us, and threw stones when trying to rest.

However the nature and the good times my wife and I had with the good freaks and family on the dance floor and surrounding peaks and troughs made up for everything.

The set I played happened to be intense music for 10pm and I guess people wanted something more happy.

The next night Atriohm had the best set of the festival despite him not feeling well. It was such an honor to play right after Atriohm for Kyana and I.

It was our debut set for our tandem act and it was out of this world to say the least. It was dark, funky, scary, intense, deep, meaningful, and the dancefloor was on fire when we were playing. It was a very proud moment for us both.

All in all - the nature gave us a bountiful amount of energy - we stayed at the shiva temple during the festival - cooking in nature was the only way to feed ourselves - but god did we feel like royalty. especially with the thunderstorm and view of Annapurna Range. The chariot ride on top of the Jeep from the mountain back to Pokhara really made us feel like King and Queen.

In hindsight, if we had to repeat the entire debacle - we would do it. no questions asked.

Bom
