Sorry I didn't understand "there is sheet music out the" ....
But about the collective memory :
When an artist creates something whatever it is.... Music, Paintings, Sculpture, Architecture, Graphic Design, Performance, etc etc.. of course he keeps the intellectual ownership but somehow his creation escapes him because it becomes everlasting... even if it is physically ephemeral (Land Art for exemple...). By being photographed, in a newspaper or a magazine criticized, sampled, etc etc, this creation lives his own Life... And like a child, his "parent", the artist cannot control everything..
Sometimes such creations becomes so popular & in a way "common" that is becomes part of the collective memory... everybody knows a bit about it without having especially studied it..
To gat back to this melody : I had already heard it at popular events played by 'amateur' bands, for carnival, marriages, etc etc
This is why I consider it as being part of this collective memory.
Hope that this point of view his understandable...
BTW the "collective memory" term is not my "creation"  it is part of the Sociological vocabulary.
