I admit it, I do watch "Survivor" on CBS every week.
Last week I was surprised during the reward challenge when I heard "My Head Feels Like a Frisbee" playing in the back while the challenge was going on. Ok, maybe it was not Shpongle, but, it was the salsa song that Shpongle sampled and used for "My Head Feels Like a Frisbee". Now I know that musicians sample a lot, and I know shpongle does sample a LOT, but I am finding more and more dissapointing to hear shpongle melodies so much. I've heard so many it takes away from the music a bit, especially when I heard it on survivor- now I am not sure what they actually write themselvs, and what they sample. Shpongle is one of my favorite acts, and they put things together very well. But what can I say, I'm a bit dissapointed.

Please click on the link below and you will see the clip of survivor that I am talking about - let it totally play thru as the music starts a couple minutes into the clip. And the clip is cut short so you won't hear the whole thing, but you'll get the idea. you will need real player.

sethspun i know its not the track, but it is the exact same melody - I already said the clip didnt have the whole song, but i watched the show and Im telling you it was note for note the same thing. The entire horn section in "my head' was played on this show.

You cant blame Posford if other people use the same samples later           Within this timeless gathering,

You don't get what I'm saying - I don't care who uses the sample - I'm saying whats dissapointing is that they didnt write the melodies to begin with - half that track is the horns that they didnt even write - thats whats dissapointing to me anyway

hold on just a sec! I think Brock just tried to slip a quiet one by us!

Dude, you watch Survivor??? Ohhh, that's like a character suicide! I'm shocked!!! I'm flabbergasted!!! Dumbfounded!!! Just kidding, of course.

I've a similar story. A friend of mine was telling me how in '98 they were watching the news on Bulgarian National Television and when the sports news came on they were shocked to hear an old Prana track blaring from the TV. It turned out that a friend of a friend was working for the station and he sneaked one by the editors.

Peace!

Ok, here I came to the rescue: this edition of Survivor is taking place in the Amazon jungle, which happens to be located (for the most part) in my country, Brazil.

The melody you talk about OA, is a famous brazilian track, overplayed in past carnivals. Raja Ram sampled it while spending time in Trancoso - and it showed up in a Shpongle track. Therefore, it's no surprise that it appeared in Survivor - and it's totally and utterly non-psy trance related.

bom bom! one more mistery solved ;-)           the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist....

ahh..I get you.

'Know the feeling, look at hiphop where theres now a big market for 'Sampled from!' records, where the tracklist has 'used by suchandsuch in thisnthat track' after every tune. Original 60's material off which one riff looped makes a whole rap track today. Exposes the lack of creativity some modern producers have, but in Posfords case I think half the art is in placing and twisting the sample.

Maybe I'll go back to my DJ name Plagiawrist if alligator-producers become popular again. Damn biters...I just heard another track with the 'this could turn a hare-krishna into a bad boy' sample SaikoPod used...
It can't be that hard to find fresh samples or to make your own, right?

Nice topic OA

I think all is said...

But I would like to add that actually I knew this melody before hearing the Shpongle Delirium..... and that I smiled like this when I listened to the album !

Nice recollection..

Cheers

ive herad that tune before. posford sampled it, changed it up a bit, blew the copyrights by changing it so, and walla. that tune is a popular one. Ive heard it in upscale lounges being played by the lounge bands. no biggie. a few psy songs are stolen but not only psy. WELCOME TO ELECTRONICA!!!

Fungus Mungus, please don't see any offence in the following words..

I don't really understand the utility of the term "steal" as I believe that such popular and over-aged melodies have entered in what can be defined as the Collective Memory...

And I find pleasant, intelligent, usefull that Artists, electronic or not, can pick up those elements of collective memory for (re)-create something new and something useful in the way listeners stay aware of the source of these elements.

And U said 'welcome to Electronica', I add welcome to sonic half-castings, feelings fusions and as Raja Ram said it in 1995, welcome to "Techno Colored Techno"

Peace.
