My 2 cents.

I was educated in classical piano and later in Jazz music.

Has the knowledge I got for harmonies, techniques etc. helped me. Yes certantly they have BUT you do not need to be educated musically to have a talent and to be creative.

These days there are so many technological possibilities for people to express their creativity without having to be the next Mozart. Agreed. There are people who should never have been released but is that not the case with anything in this world? There are quality and lack of quality.

The point is. NO you do not nessesary become a better recording artists because you got a degree in music just as you do not become a better Engineer just because you got a degree in Engineering. It's all about tallent, passion, creativity and not to forget good ears for music.

Some of the most successful artists never studied music and do/did not know the first thing about musical theory. Paul McCartney is one of them.

We took music theory lessons while we were producing on Logic trying to make our sound better. It takes a lot of time to get there but it's of course worth it! Theory is a very important factor in any music when you know it it makes life so much easier!

          Boom :)

A riff from a Neelix song was the best thing I'd ever heard at one point..I couldn't stop thinking about it and listening to it for months..

Then I got Z3ta+, only to realize that he'd used about every preset in the thing..

I doubt many artists have much of a formal education. I'd say that probably some, mostly morning artists, just kind of have a good sense of melody that you pick up on..
