so lets see, what kind of jobs one can have in our trance world, i am talking about the kind of job you could support a family with... i for one am seriously considering shifting my main income to a trance-scene related idea/job and am wondering what is really out there, what sort of skills are required to perform these tasks in a proffessional way.

here are some i thought of, please list and explain the ones you can think of:

1. Artist - learn music, sound engineering degree.

2. Label manager - BA(BS) in somekind of business admin. or music admin related degree. perhaps a degree in communications is enough? maybe a masters in that.

3. Designer - A graphic design degree, fluent in 3dmax, bryce, photoshop... multimedia design, programer and video editor AA is enough from what i hear.

please come up with more           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

a friend works fulltime (well he doesnt got a feed a whole family...but the got a gf thats enuff ) together with some friends for organizers, meaning they make party and festival setups, doing mix at parties and provide the equipment.
pretty cool imo and they are all studied electricians and one audio engineer. they do not work in the psytrance scene tho.           Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

5.Party organizer - some people make a living out of it.

But why do you need this?
a job in the trance scene is the most unsteady thing in the world:
As an artist, you have to deal with people listening to your music yet not buying it as well as popularity and so.
As a label mannager, you have to deal with the same thing, knowing that if the scene would die one day you'll either be jobless or will go towards other directions (which you don't necessarily like).

but if you're up for it...

1. First you need to know if you have a talent for making music.... And remember that it takes much more than buying a computer and downloading the latest new plugins.... It takes years of endless pratice and very hard work to find your own sound..... Dont do the mistake joining the many many clones out there that haven't used much time or any hard work before they released their first track....
We all know that too many cooks ruin the food When that's been said.... good luck mate..... If you want to make money...DONT become an artist.

2. You dont need any degree to become a label manager in our little scene.. Just do as most do. Open up your own label and join the bunch of amatures out there (with a few exceptions). I am sure there's some money to make if you cheat your atists and keep the money for yourself but it's a risky business where most dont survive for long.

3. Again it takes years to become a good designer that can make a decent living. On top of that you need to find continous work and it's not easy at all.... Especially in such a small scene as ours. Freelancing is for people with a strong psychic and for people with good contacts. Contacts that take years to establish...

I'd say ... Keep your day job! But if you really want to become involved in the scene "profesionally" then do it.... Just know that it's damn hard to make a decent living... So whatever you do...good luck

I only know 2 graphicians that have anything resembling a full time contract, one being shiva space technology germany, and another 3D Vision. most do a lot of other (free lance or contract) work on the side.

Being an artist would probably be the easiest - all you need is an initial expense of buying monitors and then trying to copy GMS or Son Kite. No need for any degree, any musical studies, and usually, no musical knowledge at all.

Label Managing is easy - even some respected labels don't pay artists which are not famous. All you have to do is just find artists that won't sue you.

About being a graphic designer - I don't know about making money, but fractals and mushrooms with surreal-wannabe color schemes take no time at all to make, so you can always do this in a few minutes at home for some extra cash.

Too easy to make money out of this stuff. This is how most people do it. Not very complex, no need for a degree or even learning something seriously.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

i dont think a degree is required for any of the jobs you state

if u could poll all the artists, label managers and designers as to whether or not they had an engineering, business or design degree (respectively), i bet most of them would not.

for artists i would imagine 90% do not

for managers i would guess at least 75% do not.

for designers probably rather more do have a relevant qualification, but only because they do design work other than for the psy scene

most people in such positions probably got there through a combination of sheer luck/fluke/coincidence and hard work. regardless.... if i had a family to support i would NEVER, ever move my job into any of these fields. As it stands, I'm trying to make my way as an artist, with no family or commitments of any kind; and its only with the greatest difficulty, and a little financial help from my family and friends, and an extremely tolerant landlord, that i'm not homeless and starving right now.

there is no money in this game. at least not guaranteed money. you have to start out doing it for free, or practically for free, whilst having a 'proper job', and only if the trance-related stuff starts bringing in serious amounts of cash should you consider leaving that proper job.

btw kaz... if you are being dryly, wryly, cynically humourous, then very funny. if you're 100% serious then i'm really not impressed.           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/

well ok, maybe i made this too personal... i meant for this to be a general info thread for anyone who wants to enter the scene... i am in it. i have a successful (money earning) party production company here in nyc, i am not gonna write the name cause i will be accused of materminding this thread for self promotion hehehe. if anyone wants to check it out, feel free to browse to my website though, it is in my profile...
the thing is its not my dayjob, i do it on the side, for the love, its not great money, and its not the point... i was just wondering if people really know how hard it is and what is out there except for dreams...

i thank you for your answers, and urge more people to respond.

kaz, wtf? you should know better.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

4.- owners of cds/clothing/whatever stores

i always read lots of messages about theres not enough stores in some countries

5.- guys who made deco, here in mexico few people makes deco for living, we wish to see killer and more interactive deco

6.- security and i mean real friendy security, guys who really take care of the party and the ppl who attend to them

7.- what about the food at parties? maybe you people can do something about it, were so tired of that crappy instant -just add hot water shit, cmon we want real tasty food!!!!

if there are goups of RESPONSIBLE people with good reputation in what they do producers will start giving them the job and we will have less work to do and more time to offer real quality parties

there are lots of work to do in parties just look around, maybe if theres not for making a good life, i bet you can make good money and you help our scene, so everybody wins           http://soundcloud.com/portable-disaster-unit

Label PR and Booking manager

Don't need any degree, just a good knowledge of the scene and contacts.           Majority is never right!

You can't reliably support a family with any psy-trance related job. Not unless you sell drugs (risky) or you own a large store, like psyshop, saikosounds, etc.

Have to aggree with RaverGirl (and Triplex but thats another story ).

You cant live a familly by being a booking manager or a label PR but you can take it as a second job and make easily 1000 euros out of it every month which means easy extra cash with just some phone calls.

All you need to have in order to qualify for the 'job' (which is not easy to obtain) is good relationships and connections with the artists, being able to find them any time on the phone (cause email sucks big time) and being able to get low prices from them so that you can make the bigger booking fee possible. In busy months like December you can make up to 2500 euros from booking fees.Always remember to work with serious people and never fuck up the artists,if you fuck them even once then you are fucked up yourself for ever.

Like TiMMY said though a job in the trance scene is the most unsteady thing           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

I may have taken it to extremes - but at least one MAJOR label today has a history of paying to some of it's artists and not all of them. And yes, artists still sign there.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222
