If your profession is making music then you should know that it's a very uncertain thing, and to expect a living out of it is an attitude that will only make you bitter when you discover that your sound isn't so popular or your CDs don't sell. It's not the making music that pays, it's the selling... and the most successful labels and artists are those who invest heavily in marketing their product, at which point the exact nature of that product takes on less significance than the fact of its marketing.

Every musician/producer needs at least a potential alternative way of earning a living; 50% of my income comes from teaching. If you find yourself changing your 'art' to fit with what will sell then I'm sorry but you're no longer an artist IMO but a technician/craftsman. Don't worry though, there is absolutely no shame in that, and there is always a market for music for adverts, corporate videos and TV theme tunes. Much much more of a market than there is for trance, for sure, although you will need just as good a set of contacts (if not better) to break into it as you do with trance.

Sorry to hear about Moonsun's problems; hope you find a good solution that will keep you involved in the scene.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Gotta agree with Colin. Sometimes promoting yourself is more important than actually making good music. Unfortunately.

Too many labels seems to be an issue. It would seem logical to me to try to combine several of the labels together to attempt to win different fan bases and cut down the number of labels.

But more importantly, it's about the artists that are being hired to play for the label. I don't mean so much your label Moon Sun, just generally speaking. If there are'nt many big name artists then it will be difficult to sell cd's, especially since just about everyone has access to the internet and it's easy to download music that you like with out having to pay too much or nothing at all, for it.

However, I don't believe that downloading music is so much the problem, if you are able to use it to your benefit.

People downloading music from the internet is a reality, and if you complain about the downloaders and you have a label, then you probably didn't think things out to clearly before you started your label up or didn't want to believe it was going to be an issue, because you had to know it was a reality coming into the business.

However, there are other ways you can benefit from many people downloading your music. First off, it's a great way to get your music out there, fantastic exposure. People listening to it, deciding for themselves if this is an artist that they will support and possibly buy an album or compilation from one day. But I do believe a real opportunity lies once they are acknowledged as a good artist or dj. At this point, if you are able to promote your artists, through parties and festivals, and then collaborating with some of the other labels and organizers to do the same with you. This would help avoid some of the division within the scene. Which there seems to be alot of division as it is, in all aspects, from the genre's of music that is being played to age of the attendees at the parties to the bickering amongst the organizers within their country, large or small because of competition.

Good organization of parties and festivals with good artists and djs should attract a good amount of people and if used wisely can be a good way to promote the label.

Not only is organizing parties a good way to promote your label, but getting your djs and artists out there, playing in events, all over the world. Have your label tour through south america and north america one summer, europe another summer and etc.
You can collaborate with organizers and labels worldwide, to get the artists and djs out there spreading your labels music, and if you do this creatively enough there are ways you can do it getting your name out there.

Trying to always send out positive vibes out to everyone you meet, not just you, but everyone involved with the label. Word travels fast of good people. One day one person says something good about how great the energy of this person was, the next day that person tells his friends, someone posts it somewhere like isratrance for instance on how great of a person he and everyone involved is, next thing you know, a lot of people recognize the good people you are and that will only be a benefit to you.

There are many more ideas that you could do to promote the album, these are just some.

It WILL take Resources to get started, if you dont have that much, then it is pretty unrealistic to think that will be able to survive, and you should probably reconsider if you don't.

It will take time and patience, it is unrealistic as well to think that you will get immediate results as far as an economic standpoint is concerned. Little by little, moving forward, as long as your growing and the feedback is positive, i think this is the result one can realistically look for to begin with.

But i do believe it all begins and ends with the energy you put into it and the artists and djs representing your label.

Average energy and average artist and dj will get average results, and average results in the scene havn't been too good. So it's insane to think otherwise.

I wish you good luck Moon Sun Records, at least you gave it a go, and that is a lot more than what many have done.

Maybe there is still a chance somehow.

Nooooooooo

For a relatively new label, I really like your releases. Sad you can't keep going with it..finances are tough.

Good luck with wherever life takes you, and I hope someday Moonsun can come back..

Absolutely but even with the most powrful promotion and marketing strategies at your service...if what you make is not commercial, not catchy, not snappy...or if it's plain shite.
You won't have a chance either...is a comination of both.

As a label owner I can completely understand where MoonSun is coming from ... so what makes sense (to me) in these times of small sales, is for the artist to be the label. In other words, there may not be enough income from the sales to pay the artist AND support a label, but in a situation where the artist eassentially self releasing, its a little more managable (not 2 entities trying to share a real small income). Sure not every musician is interested in business, but it can be done.
