Meet Xcience (conjunction of Exact Science) the midwest's newest psy DJ crew and soon to be event orgs.

As a mission statement, all DJ's current and future in Xcience are the cream of the regional crop. All excel at the exact science of smooth mixing and transitions. All can create a seamless set that takes the dancer on a journey, and while not limited to a specific style, all fill a complementary roll with one another. A full nights journey can be composed fully of Xcience DJ's.
Another premise is all members of Xcience, play on a physical medium. CDJ's and Turntables. No Traktor, No Ableton, No Seratto, No laptops and visually matching wav files. We are DJ's for DJ's sake. Conisours of the art if you will.

In choosing members of the crew, besides the above criteria, Not more than 1 DJ was pulled or chosen from any particular existing crew, so as to not make Xcience appear a subsect of another crew. We are a separate entity and while we welcome the chance and opportunity to work with others, we also want to be able to stand on our own. Regional considerations also played at part in the process of decisions.

With out further a-do your members of Xcience are :

PARADIGM -twilight full on
AKTIF - neuro
MEGHAN - night-time minimal
CLANDESTINE - night-time power trance
AIRYCK - morning full on
MACHI - progressive

Midwest dreamteam if you will...
Amazingly good luck to all of you!!

Underground culture's follow the Hydra myth quite well - remove one head, and three grow back to take its place.

Can't wait to see what you guys have up your sleeves!

i've seen some of the best DJs in the world use Traktor, Ableton, and Serato. This statement makes no sense at all to me, sorry.

other than that, you got a solid contingent of DJs, kudos.           ..it's just another party..

Thats all the more reason for them to have that mission statement. Who will teach the next generation?

One more seed in the ground! All the best for 2008!

Richie Hawtin uses Serato and Ableton. He is more oldschool than any of us.

I honestly think that turntables and CD decks will soon go the way of DATs. no reason to resist progress. but, of course, to each their own.

YAY Lawrence - good for you!

I'm in agreement in avoiding the MP3 trend we're seeing in psytrance - those files are pretty weak and lack dynamic range - they remove all the masked sounds and take out a lot of the quieter sounds all together. Plus having your computer do all your level setting and beatmatching tends to make the mixes seem bland and lose some of that punch and zest I so look for in a good DJ.

Best of luck and I'll support you guys the best I can up here in NYC - gwyn

Congrats on the new group.. and another debate thread !!

Traktor, Serato, Live, Torq, etc all support wavs.. some with even 24 bit! (take that CD's)
CDR's also support MP3's.. even 128k ones..

Serato, Traktor Live, Torq, all support encoded vinyl or cd for realtime control.. There are also MIDI controllers with the same controls as CDJ's..

The Auto BPM detection is never spot on and requires manual adjustment. If you don't know anything about mixing in the first place you will trainwreck mixes like crazy.

The "great skill" of the +/- 7 trick is nothing special.. sorry..

Learning how to use the programs and interfaces can take just as much skill as learning CDJ's.

@ Dimitri and Donald Glaude can mix circles around Richie Hawtin,IMO and he still mainly uses vinyl.

Perhaps its a each to their own thing, but i personally feel that all the laptops and digital mixing are taking some of the artistry out of the act of mixing. Some share this view, some do not Perhaps im too much of a traditionalist for my own good, but thats how i see it.
but you must agree that it is nice to have a common thread and mission tieing those in a crew together, is it not.

@ Psycore, nice Hydra analogy. Really the timing with the birth of this crew and the end of Goahed, while something not planned, just happend to coincide. Ive been talking and piecing this together for weeks, with planning on doing the final leg work this past weekend at Earthdance. Meghan just happend to be the last missing piece of the puzzle, and it just worked out.

no one said any thing about mp3's. you can obviously spin uncompressed aif/wav in the above mentioned software applications. i echo DMTree's statements... i don't understand why we should limit ourselves to 16 bit CDJ's. if i'm playing my own original music, i would much rather present it in 24 bit coming off a laptop, even if i can't beat match it at all. any ways, apps like traktor and ableton allow you to play 24 bit files and beatmatch them, so i say the sooner we all switch over to that, the sooner trance labels will start releasing the music in 24 bit, and the better off we'll be.

of course, vinyl is superior to all digital formats. but lugging vinyl out to the forest/desert is a bit strenuous. and wind blowing the needle off the decks ain't no good either. and when it's cold as balls and yr fingers are so numb that you can't even feel the vinyl jogging against yr hands, it gets a bit tough to make a good mix!

also paradigm maybe you want to include some artists in your roster as well. an entire party of just DJ sets can get a bit stale, IMO. i like to hear at least one good live set in the middle of the night or sunrise.

Aktif kicks ass by the way!! word up homies, good luck with this, it's a good idea.

oh and i've seen great DJ's like Arahat and Bodhi connect their laptops directly to CDJ-1000's and just spin the digital files "traditionally" if you will. using EQ knobs and everything. and then they get to play their original tunes in 24 bit. very nice, IMO.

i do agree about the lives, but thats where your headliner for the night comes in

and ive got no problems with using a external controler, or connecting a laptop to cdjs as Tom and Bodhi do. It give that external "presence" to things

but 80% of laptop djs i see, just hide behind the laptop, run short mixes and use the plus or minus button to keep things on time. Not to say these people are playing bad sets, but something along the way seems lost in the translation

yes of course, but when you have artists in your crew, then you can quickly grow and become both a crew and a record label
then you're REALLY helping the local (US) scene!!
