The desire to be part of something greater than oneself is a common human feeling, which, in my opinion, is based on one of two things (which are most likely related):
1.) The fear of death/the unknown.
2.) The fear that there is no "greater meaning" to anything.
Personally, I feel like there is enough to wonder and ask questions about in the natural world without needing to diminish it by making up man-made myths, monsters, and spook stories to attempt to explain something which they otherwise cannot explain. So they invent an answer, because it's not as terrifying to them as having no answer at all.

Good observation. But you could also say:
The desire to be part of something greater than oneself is a common human feeling, which, in my opinion, is based on one of two things (which are most likely related):
1.) The love for oneself and others.
2.) The fearlessness that arises after accepting that there is no meaning to anything.
I tend to go with these two, for myself anyway.

I did not say it could not be spiritual 
Skepticism is very healthy. Carl Sagan in the videos you linked was a big skeptic and wrote several good books on the matter. I suggest his book "A Demon Haunted World: Science As A Candle In The Dark" if you're up for a good read.
But let's face it - the illusion of some kind of control or order is more comforting to people than the realization of no control. That's a fear-based reaction - love has nothing to do with it and throwing in for ancient wisdom does not correlate with love for yourself or other people.
Just because an idea is tenacious does not automatically make it worthy.

I posted these videos because Carl Sagan represents an skeptic mind who was not hostile toward religion just for the sake of being hostile.
He criticized believing in prophecies, horoscopes and all that hogus bogus, but he believed also that religion has a place in humankind and that it doesnt have to clash with science. He has a book on religion-science relationships too.
We construct the meaning of this holydays, being christmas, thanksgiving, pascua or mayan cycle end, in the end they are just celebrations that tracend their religious origin and create bonds among human beings.

What happens? Depends on your perception and who helped in engineering your perception… On the 21st of december, some believe the Mayan's will return as the serpent and harvest its followers…Eye took a trip once past the borders to be a skeptic.. Eye learned that skepticism was boring and that a true skeptic would eventually become skeptic over itself. Proving it was an awakening... Me wus enlightened to learn that type of thinking lacks imagination and thought creates reality so me couldnt no longer allow that type of thinking into my safety zone… ..
Butt! if ya want to toss around some exotic particles then the serpent can translate to the coiled snake representing the spiraling DNA in medical symbology - opening, activating, bringing you to higher levels of consciousness like in some yoga's or whatever your perception of the serpent is…. Many will notice it and many will never know!
