yoyoyo. just had a thought while on the bog.
since ive started listening too trance ive devolped a  taste for mathematics. not boring algebra but number theory and the philosophy behind math.
i think the connection between math and trance is that they are both very precise and very very abstract at the same time.
im having troubble expressign my exact point but i hope you get the idea.
anyway any comments eloboration, maybe ill start my first really big thread.

math is science , trance is art . art can't be precise ,in art there are no boundaries - in comparasion with math with its laws ,where everything  is precisly defined .
maybe if u clearfy yourself better i'll understand what connection between these two u'r talking about. one thing is obvious - trance (as we know it 2day) couldn't be made without mathematics , but u can say it almost about everything in modern life .

I agree with tal - trance is art BUT the patterns ,must be accurate and fit in perfectly -
I can say about my self that since I was stareted to hear trance - my grades went up a lot (now in unversity) - maybe it's because the fact that it makes me to sit and study while listening to Goa trance

i think the abtractness of trance is what links it to math.
math is like in star treck where theirs always uncharted teritory and trance takes yu to uncharted teritory.
a crappy metaphore (is this a metaphore, im flunking literature) but maybe it clarifys it. ill try again
i think elad got me. go with him. even toug my grades plumeted

IMO there is a connection between the two, the beat is precise and repeating like math, but in the other hand trance is also art so u can do what ever u like as long as is sounds good.

i would say that all music has math in it. pythagoras knew that. it's all about patterns and nuneric reraltionships.

ok ... i agree that some parts of math r very abstract and in this u may draw some parallel with trance . i think that a connection that was built between these two in your mind maybe learns that u can actually feel math and trance quite deep :)
oftopic : there is ass kikking  set in philosomatika this time -> stay tuned

Music is very much art but you can't say art can't be precise. Without any precise in the art (or music) it would just be noise. So you can say that music is both precise and abstract.

I think that to be able to express yourself in such a precise way that people understands it but still without any boundaries, that is how good an artist is. Like when you draw something you have the picture in the head right... but to make that picture on the paper... that's the skill.

I also want to add, listening to trance is perfect when you study things that are only the same procedure on and on, if you can get in the flow with music and also study in the flow... But sometimes I study better when it's perfectly quiet (when studying mathemathics probably).

exactly , u can do only routine work , repetitive, when u need only technique but not brain skills ... and sometimes it frightens me :)

Check out the movie Pi, that will confirm your theory and give you some good explanations to back yourself up with. I had a very intresting conversation with some guy at a party about this issue. I was really fucked up so it all made sense to me then. He was talking about fractals and stuff, I was just nodding my head.

Well, as an engineering student and math buff, i want to add my 2 cents to this discussion:

First, fractals are mathematical objects. And they're also art. Therefore, math can be artistic, btw most advanced math is highly artistic (proving a theorem is much like painting something). If u're interested in this, read The Fractal Geometry of Nature, by Benoit Mandelbrot.
Second, music is not math. It's something rather more complex. Eletronic music, and psy trance included, is quite repetitive and structured if u think about it. So, in a way, they share some caracteristics with math. And, producing music in a computer is  doing math of a higher grade. That's because computers have math (binary math) as their natural language, so whenever Cedric writes a trak on his Cubase, he's not only creating new Talamasca music, he's also tinkering with a LOT of numbers. That's why most music software suck up a lot of computer resources. Because creating a groovy bassline means an enormous amount of number-crunching.

Having said all that, i don't think listening to trance improves or diminishes your math skills. I went through 4 terms of calculus listening to psy trance while studying, but i know ppl that can't stand it. So, come to think about it, we have completely unrelated things, math and trance. It only happens that some of us like them both.

Ok, than. how would you define art generated by computers?

Well u said it yourself: art generated by computers. ;-)

And i should add that i don't think any higher or lower of art done with computers when compared to art done with human hands only. After all it's us who program the computers...
