I am intrigued by the idea that of a chemical changing ones perception of music. Because a drug is a chemical that acts on specific receptors there must be some direct link between the physical changes that a drug causes in the brain and the physical charcteristics of ones perception (for example the perciencved pitch of a sound being shifted). Because LSD and psilocybin are slightly different (although in many respects very similar) in their relative affinity for different kinds of serotonin receptor (there are at least 14 kinds of serotonin receptor fyi), it seems likely to me that there might be differences in the way they alter perception. I imagine that individual differences also make a big difference in the details of how a drug changes a persons perception (I wonder if certain peoples percieving some geometric forms and colors more than others whilst on certain drugs has more to do with the persons genetic makeup or their enviroment)


However whether certain music sounds good on a particular drug seems like more a matter of aesthetic tastes. Why should peoples taste in hallucinations vary any less than peoples tastes in art and music? They both have to do with judging beauty.

The entheogen Ayahuasca for instance, is way better with natural organic sounds like congas, hymns and chants. Acid is a bit different I must admit, it’s definitely also a matter of personal taste and dosage, if you’re on really high dose LS-25, I would not recommend playing the most evil kind of dark-psy, even though it’s normally you’re preferred style of psychedelic.
