SkyBluGoa and i are planning a benefit party for a worthy charity. the concept of this party will be that ALL PROFITS will go to the charity of our choice. we hope to convince the artists to come to play for free and the same goes to anyone who helps this production happen art/decoration wise or in promotion. this way we can minimize door costs to $15 and still provide 2 live shows from international artists.
our original plan was to donate all profits to "Free Tibet", yet after talking to Tibetan monk friend, he explained to me that most charities who deal with that do not handle the money properly and the even the Dalai Lama pretty much gave up on it.

so we are looking for a worthy charity, we would like your help with suggestions:
key points are: 80% of the money sent by us must go to the actual cause (not %60 like some charities) and also it must be something that matters on a global scale. that's our view anyway... can be an american charity like saving american lands etc., but due to the latest election results i dont expect much sympathy from our global friends regarding that...
thanks.

First of all..good for you! That is a great idea and it would be great if all organizers threw at least one party like this..we could do a lot of good.

Not only does all the money go to the children in this organization but anyone is free to go to the camps in India and visit or work and see your money in action...

http://www.megfoundation.org/

The Children’s Village of Puri, Orissa County, Bay of Bengal was created by Mary-Ellen Gerber after the cyclone of October 1999.

The cyclone devastated most of the rural area of Orissa County, killing at least 30,000 people and leaving behind over 3,000 children with no means of survival except begging. Begging is a tough state of living and not always rewarding.

Mary-Ellen Gerber sold her successful business in Los Angeles and was traveling throughout the world seeking to put her money to good use. On her return to Los Angeles, she encountered a native person of India narrating the disaster of Orissa County.

Mary-Ellen went back to India armed with two names, an address and telephone number in the city of Vizakhapatnam. She met with Eliazar T. Rose and Pr. Parivaraj, both of whom were bringing some relief back to Orissa County. The chemistry between these three was right. They brought Mary-Ellen to the devastated site where these poor people welcomed her with their simplicity. Mary-Ellen’s visit was chosen as an occasion to graduate the 48 young girls who had completed a 3 months training. This training taught them to be first aid nurses and to help women giving birth where there is no doctor in the villages. Mary-Ellen was in charge of giving the girls their certificates.

Mary-Ellen jumped into the relief action by setting up 8 feeding stations for over 1,200 persons a day. The majority of the beneficiaries were children. Mary-Ellen took upon herself to rent a house in Puri where she fostered the first 24 Children. But she was concerned for the remaining children. Children had become cautious after such trauma. They had lost everything including their trust toward benefactors. They got used to being in the street. Pr. Parivaraj had made it his specialty to contact, talk and convince the children from the infamous “railroad station,” reassuring them that somebody was out there and would help them. These children would be helped by being given a hot meal each day, a shower and clean clothes. Eliazar T. Rose and Pr. Parivaraj had a program called “Meals on Wheels”. They had asked restaurants in the large cities to save their good left over meals every day to feed the abandoned children.

http://www.wish.org

Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation's mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish® experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors, and entire communities.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded in 1980 after a little boy named Chris Greicius realized his heartfelt wish to become a police officer. Since its humble beginnings, the organization has blossomed into a worldwide phenomenon, reaching more than 127,000 children worldwide.

Although it has become one of the world's most well-known charities, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has maintained the grassroots fulfillment of its mission.

A network of more than 25,000 volunteers enable the Make-A-Wish Foundation to serve children with life-threatening medical conditions. Volunteers serve as wish granters, fund raisers, special events assistants, and in numerous other capacities.

Thats a super idea 'surrender'.

The question is
'How do u make a charity more worthwhile than another'?

Im under the impression that the most important charities are the one's concerning children. It does not mean that other charities are worth less, just that my priorities wud lie in helpin the kids.

Djfanboy and green nun have named some great charities.

www.cry.com

CRY, Child Relief and You, is an Indian NGO that works for the benefit of underprivileged Indian children.

Rippan Kapur, the airline purser who founded CRY, was an ordinary person driven by an extraordinary dream - the dream that no Indian child would be deprived of rights as basic as survival, participation, protection and development.

Today, CRY peoples' movement for India's children is more than 1.5 lakh individuals and organisations. In the words of Rippan, "whatever it be that you choose to do, it will make a difference - to a child's life and your own".

ahhhhhh gadi my man
another solid idea...
i am all for it.. like karma cole i can vouch for cry as i believe the HQ's are based in bombay. they do alot of good for the kids there. pm bhoj i am sure hel tell u the same..

other than that i guess we could focus on an area like iraq, where i know most if not all the psyheads in america and around the globe are against the war.. thus any contribution comming from here is a peaceful way of givin the birdie to the 'war'. plus might provide an extra incentive to the artist to play here. (ps if anyone is for tha war and is offened my apologies but i dont believe that the innocent ppl there need to suffer)

whatever the outcome il be there for sure..
good going mate...

wow super suggestions! thanks... i will get going on them when i return to isratrance next tuesday
some very solid ideas here to check out.

-Karma Cola: when i mean worthy its not that one cause is better then another. its more that i want to make sure that your money is actually getting somewhere where it can help. ill give u an example of what im talking about: some organizations use 40% of whatever donation to give them for their office operational things such as their salaries, vacations etc etc... i'd rather donate this money to a place where i know most of it goes to the actual cause itself.

Suberb idea, Gadi, only you to come up with such a great idea. As Gaialau stated, The unicef has done a great work not just in our country but at other countries too. It's worth taking a look. For anything you need, you can have my support.

Peace

great you are taking this idea forward gadi.
it's good and rare to see actions like this in the trance scene, sometimes i got the impression of being part of an alienated scene, that talks a lot about spirituality and union, but forgets to take a look in the world out there...
you can count with my participation on anything you need...

what a wonderful thing to do for us and the world. allowing us to help out the world by trancedancing and helping the world out yourself.

and i think an iraqi cause is an excellent idea because of the global nature of the NYC trance scene and this musical culture in general.

unicef seems to be a great idea, because if you elect something smaller and with less reputation you'll have to take extra care of what is done with the money.
i say that because it reminds me a rock festival organized in the 80's by the rolling stones or something like that
for the benefit of an organization in africa. someone, who is probably burning in hell, ran away with the money.

anyway, that s a great idea , hope you'll do it!

Hey man,

Here's an idea.... It's not a huge NGO like UNICEF or CRY but it's an organization based in India called SIDH (Society for Integrated Development of the Himalayas). This was actually started by my mum's brother and he's still running it today. They have basically setup over 35 schools (balwadis) in the rural areas of the Himalayas. These schools however don't just teach conventional material that all of us learnt in school like Literature, Calculus, etc... They do cover basic math and stuff like that but tend to focus more on humanity, morality and things like that.....

Anyway, I thought it might be a good option...
