With this release Iboga records continues their trend of rmx albums centred on the seminal pieces of their stars. After Antix, Perfect Stranger, and Ace Venture, it is Liquid Soul’s opus that undergoes treatment here. Capo is one of the select few who can contend for the much-sought-after title of most popular act in the Progressive Trance scene. Blending a rocking bassline with crisp riffs, good melodies and a Swiss clockmaker’s precision in track construction and build up, his style has changed but very little since Liquid Soul’s debut album in 2006, ensuring his global success. It is interesting to hear what will become of his music in the hands of a bunch of dedicated remixers.

1. Liquid Soul : global illumination (Martin Roth omfg rmx)
Multiple award nominee, top beatport seller, Ministry of Sound radio show guest... the list of titles could continue for Martin Roth, the Berlin based international DJ and renowned producer. He opens this CD with a piece that met with success after its initial digital release. His interpretation slows down the rhythmic combo, and takes it in a more progressive house direction, with a nice, almost slapped bass, indulging groove. The reverb laden arpeggiated theme is given even more room than in the original, notably in the mid term break, lifting it to a really anthemic dimension in the final bars. Nice job.

2. Liquid Soul : devotion (Protoculture rmx)
It is with a certain apprehension that your reviewer broaches the Protoculture rmx after the disappointment triggered by the previous appearance on Iboga records of the South African morning trance hero, who once enchanted the crowds with the cornerstone “Refraction” album (2003). Nate Raubenheimer stays true to the melodic trancey roots of Capo’s original, even mixing in some tried and true, but a bit overused ingrediants such as the large reverb rhythmic combo, the strong delayed voice sample and the inevitable arpeggios... all in all, delivering a good morning tune for easily satisfied pathos seekers.

3. Liquid Soul : love in stereo (Jerome Isma-ae rmx)
Next is progressive house star Jerome Isma-Ae’s rendition of Love in Stereo for Iboga. This track is a real success story, scoring high on the beatport charts for months, eventually being relicenced to Armada. It was a landmark in the Munchen-based producer’s career, announcing his current, crunchy punchy tougher production, combined with a strong melodic streak. Need I add that this is a great DJ tool, which has been tested and approved on the most demanding of dancefloors.

4. Liquid Soul : push (Phony Orphants rmx)
Phony Orphants returns with another teaser for the duo’s anticipated forthcoming album. Their rmx invites the listener to embark on a quite different journey than that suggested by the original score, with more psyish overtones. It sports new arrangements such as the pitched up and down pad, the wobbling, siliconed synth backing up the rhythmic combo, and has groove and appeal. Well done!

5. Liquid Soul : the reason (Perfect Stranger rmx)
Perfect Stranger’s interpretation strongly departs from the other remixers, transplanting the track into his own idiosyncratic soundscapes: the thrust expertly injected by throbbing bassline, the nano breaks, and the suspense and then tension expertly constructed in the virtuoso long midterm break. However, there is an the old-school flavour in this track, which is quite novel in the Stranger’s repertoire, and is audible in the acid retro synth. He has considerably enhanced the brief voice sample notably by introducing it at the end of the break, strategically relaunching the track for an outburst of dance in the final sequences. This is the tranciest tune of Yuli’s recent production, in which the true love of our wizard for that repertoire shows through, and the result is exhilarating.

6. Liquid Soul : clean mind (Human Element rmx)
Human Element is the new alias of the Swiss DJ Martin, Capo’s regular partner in music composition in their act Earsugar. This new version of Clean Mind takes the seminal piece to more pronounced morning trance territories. It’s punchy, it’s melodic, but all the arrangements are stale, routine and don’t bring anything exciting to the original version.

7. Liquid Soul : desire (Ovnimoon rmx)
Chilean Producer Ovnimoon prolongs the melodic Trance vein of the remixes but does not even modify the recycled old clichés, overused formulas and cheap melodies for the kids. Cheese fest to be expected. Only for unsophisticated stomachs.

8. Liquid Soul : sweet things (System 7 rmx)
On the contrary, legendary UK act System 7 gives a demonstration of how to make an exciting composition with old tricks. And the score is high for this stomping rework. It deftly combines a powerful compelling tribal rhythmic combo with invigorating crispy guitar soaring riffs and a truly elegant, reverb-laden, uplifting build-up in the second half of the track that slowly takes command over the general mood in a more breezy register. Close your late morning or afternoon set with this piece and get the applauses of an appreciative crowd.

9. Liquid Soul : the ritual (Lenny Ibizarre rmx)
Ibiza-based producer Lenny Ibizarre has recently made his successful Iboga debut with tracks produced in association with Iboga Head Honcho Emok. He closes the first CD with one of his trademark, down-tempo ambient tracks. It’s groovy, classy, atmospheric to the bone. Nice chilled out conclusion           http://myspace.com/adenbeatersweet

1. Liquid Soul : lost gravity
Opening the second chapter is a new production from the Swiss master, released on John O Flemming’s fresh-from-the-oven Set 11 compilation for Iboga. Nothing new under the sun, however, as this track is fueled by Capo’s trademark winning ingredients: a galloping transposed bassline, conversing melodic synth lines, gritty reverberated riffs, a heavy hi-hat pulse... All this converges towards a perfectly engineered break which launches a nice low-fat melody for a hands-in-the air finish. Another fine DJ tool from the Psy Prog hero.

2. Liquid Soul : devotion (Ace Ventura rmx)
With a style akin to Capo’s, is Ace Ventura’s production, the other “heavy weight” of the Iboga roster, who has an impressive CV crammed with honorific titles such as best artist Beatport nomination, which crowns an already long international career. Here, he has come up with a much appreciated renewed bassline, catchy synth whip hits and rattles. A subtle melodic build-up discreetly constructs the melodic vein of the track which unveils its true nature after the last break, disclosing significant elements of the seminal piece. Ace on his melodic side and another winner in this album.

3. Liquid Soul : out of the blue (Tristan rmx)
UK Trance veteran producer Tristan returns to Iboga after a nice debut on the Freq rmx album in 08. His rendition pitches up the tempo, and the bassline is more outwardly rolling and aggressive. The melodic aspect of the original is swapped for a thorough, full-on trance approach with classic, but dejà vu, arrangements. An effective but run-of-the-mill DJ tool.

4. Liquid Soul : escape (Visua rmx)
Mexican act Visua makes his Iboga debut with this unnecessary rmx of “Escape”. It accentuates the atmospheric trance vein with very cheesy effects, extra, but cheap melodies, and, overall, the production skills seem, IMHO, far below that of the original composer, as well as that of the remixers involved so far in this album.

5 Liquid Soul : Dreamdancer
This tune is a milestone in Capo’s career, one that strongly contributed to Capo’s reputation as a prominent Prog-Trance artist back in 2006. It originally appeared on a vintage Plastik Park compilation, then entitled “Daydreamer”, and was hammered by all prog DJs in the world. This avatar is probably a trick for relicencing. And a great opportunity for the collectors or the new generations who might have missed this classic.

6. Liquid Soul : in my mind
It is yet another relicencing of an old track. Not the best one from LS, and if this rerelease is of any interest, it would be to show the extent to which production skills have improved over the years, as Emok put it in a recent interview.

7. Fatali : ocean view (Liquid Soul rmx)
Another relicence from Fatali’s 2007 rmx album at Yoyo. A sweet, dreamy, lazy, sunfilled rmx that
complements the panorama of Capo’s melodic tunes.

8. Liquid Soul & Perfect Stranger : wild cave
Initially released at Blue Tunes six months ago, this is an interesting track, but more than anything a “funny” one that exemplifies that the collaboration of two great artists with strong personalities does not necessarily lead to a successful result. It’s the kind of mishap that one encounters when trying to make a mayonnaise either when the yoke is too cold or the mustard is at the wrong temperature. You keep spinning the ingredients but the sauce never takes. Here, PS’s techy whole grain just doesn’t emulsify with LS’s melodic oil. But nuff’ with cooking lessons.

9. System 7 : space bird (Liquid Soul rmx)
Last in the series of relicenced tracks is the classic System 7 “Space bird” released in January 08. I will not linger on this track as the initial release on A-Wave also included a Dubfire “deep space” techy rmx of the same that simply blew a lot of people’s minds, overshadowed Capo’s interpretation, and is probably still in a lot of DJs’ cases.

Bottom line
The generous package has enough arguments to satisfy Psy and Prog DJs and listeners’ demands for new material. Highlights on the Prog side are definitely the Martin Roth, Isma-ae and the new Phony Orphants, topped off with System 7, even if my personal favourite is the Perfect Stranger rmx. The Psy heads will savour the Ace. However, the amount of relicenses and re-releases likens this CD to a retrospective, aimed at collectors of Capo, since many of them are bargains but seem to be there mainly to fill-up the album.

A very funny review, so all the new appearances in Iboga seems to be the lowest remixes and the "big" names seems to be ok, bullshit....

Both CDS has a lot of stuff to offer, Ovimoon has make a great tune as well Human Element. About the Visua remix if you really but really knew about production you will realize that there were something wrong with the mastering, in some parts seems to be much lower than the rest so something were wrong in that one but I have got each release from Visua and the guy has a lot of quality he have like 27 releases around and as I said in other post some weeks ago, Visua don't used to use the kick or the bassline in your faceeeee as a lot of artists around, for that hear "Energy" "Stage of Evolution" or "Vishuddha", all those tracks from him aim to that build.. his sound is much intelligent and organic but not so many people get it.. experienced people knows it immediately!

From my side, Ace Ventura remix seems just "Ok" nothing really to scream, the same goes with Martin Roth just ok, Tristan and Protoculture did a wonderful job... so from my side I've enjoyed each tune included not bad tunes here.

All the Liquid Soul followers will be pleased with both CDS, truly epic morning stuff and great producers included.

Don't be upset, that's his opinion, but I am pretty sure that's not what the majority of us think of your rmx. And the deserved success of your last album confirm this if it was needed.

As Steve00 I have many different opinions about the tracks compared to Aden review. But I am still among those "kids" that prefers some nice "cheap" progressive melodic psy trance and remains mostly indifferent to the "recent" influx of progressive techish/electroish sounds that has unfortunately (in my opinion obviously) infected a lot of talented psy prog artists. But I have read this discussion already on this board, so no need for me to relaunch it.

Hey, Aden maybe you are a bit older? i mean of (mind heart and ears) for understand the new music? in my case im older, maybe more than you but not in these 3 important senses than anyone needs for understand the music! i find the tracks of the new artists in Iboga pretty nice and with lot of feeling! Do you know than this great selection of music is directly from Nicola Capobianco?, so he find all the tracks nice and with the necesary quality, melodys, atmospheres and sounds, all of them for published in his New album release from IBOGA records!

i think than you dont hear and FEEL the music, you only see the customary parameters than you use and the "rules" in your dj sets, your own rules.

Your criticism Lacks of objectivity!!! indeed.

We want objective reviews here! somebody in agreement with me?

I enjoyed listening to this music alot, although its nothing new or special.
I wasn't gonna mention anything about the mastering but since steve00 did im gonna...
who ever mastered the track - System 7 space bird (Liquid Soul rmx) should be slapped for missing such a fundamental thing as DC offset. a simple linear phase high pass filter at 10hz does wonders to the clarity of this track.
