Personally I enjoy sets from DJs for 3 hours if the party is going to reach morning and beyond. I do not want to go to a party to realize i am going to be stuck with just one vision or journey, unless I know the DJ is just absolutely fantastic, and he is the reason why I am @ the party in the first place.

3 hours give you a change to start, build, bang and conclude, maintaining a high level of concentration and pushing hard.

For me it is like a 3000m race. You need to pace yourself, but also you can maintain a strong and stealthy push, using intelligence and strategy.

And if for some reason you do not like the DJ, three hours fly quick, in between good conversations, spliffs and some doofing around with some highlight tracks on the unwelcomed set.

BOM!

I went to a party here in New York recently that was very mediocre. Shanti was playing this "club house" dj set, that in my opinion was horrible. I was lucky that he only played around 1 hour and 40 minutes because he was not my cup of chai-lai-lai at all. So shorter DJ sets are better due to vareity and for pleasing all pallettes.

So uptil now the conclusion is:
2 hour sets seem right since if the dj is nogood then its a good thing for the listeners. Although if the DJ is a good journey dj then it makes sense. If we take surrenders hypothesis that all the djs playing are good (hahahahahaha) then it would make sense to give them their time to let them build their journey. Hmmm this is an interesting one. I wish I had anythin else to add - but in all honesty seems like a catch-22 - youre damed if you do and your damned if you dont.

I heard Goa Gill play for 16 hours straight and nobody complained... I think if DJ is good, he could play all night, and if he (or she!) sucks - well... it's better not to have DJs that suck, right? I guess play it by ear with each DJ/ party, there is no universal solution - is there one for anything?

I do not think any DJ who plays @ a party sucks. The skills, mixing and choice of music is usually very professional, but taste is a subjective thing and that was my point. If I personally had to endure somebody playing music, which is not my cup of chai-lai-lai... I have three hours to socialize and to explore the forest or surroundings But the DJ will have enough time to express him/herself and to make some meaning of his/her music

I heard Goa Gil played one time 36 hours but we all know he is a mad man he he

I'm going to jump into this slightly older topic b/c it seems to keep coming up and I never get around to posting my thoughts. My answer: it obviously depends on the party, the DJ's, and the overall mood, but I'm a fan of the 60-90 minute set.

Reasons: First I think w/ the right people up there the collaborative energy can form something unique. Karan I agree w/ you that a DJ CAN just blast all the new killers and be done w/ it. But this has to be done w/ performers who are not up there to be rock stars. Seems that rock star DJ's are there to do one thing and that's play the latest and greatest tracks. This can get repetitive in a hurry. I agree w/ Monica, it has to be performers who understand their time slot and the intent, their role as guides, not bright light superstars.

Second I think w/ more shorter sets you're more likely to introduce fresh talent instead of the same acts you see at every party. It's hard to take a risk on a small number of timeslots. I have a soft spot for this issue, because it was just such an event that really opened the door for me coming into my own as an area DJ. I don't think it necessarily hurts the "journey" aspect either. One of my most meaningful sets ever was actually truncated from an hour, ended up being 55 minutes. There were real connections made there - of course I would have liked to keep going, but who knows, any longer might have diluted that or diminished it somehow.

Point being that I think a shorter set is positive for the energy of an event and also can be good for the community overall. Keeps things nice and fresh. Just my two cents.
