A typical party here in nyc is 9 hours from start to finish (11pm-8am). Usually consisting of several dj+acts... i would like to know what people think of this in regards to the optimal number of dj/artists and their time share.

for example: most live acts are around an hour and a half. so lets exclude that as time that's unmoveable.

2 lives X 1.5 hrs = 3 hours

now we have 6 hours left for dj sets.

so here is the question again:
1. would you like to see vareity in those 6 hours? 1.5 hour dj sets can fit up to 4. (1.5 X 4 =6)
2. 3 dj sets of 2 hours. (3 X 2 =6)
3. 2 dj sets of 3 hours. (2 X 3 = 6)

please be kind enough to explain your answer so we can all understand why you picked it. if there is another config. i didnt mention, feel free to write it as another option.
thanks.

If it's a good DJ, I would always prefer the 3 hour set over the 2 hour. It gives them more time to express themselves by building up the set slowly and it also lets them play stuff that isn't as mainstream because they don't have to worry about fitting in all the hits as well. It would seem easier to go through a couple of different styles too. Not just focus on morning full on, dark progressive or whatever.           Both teams played hard

i would agree with apocalypse. . .longer dj sets in which a skilful dj can really take you on a journey. this is obviously dependant on that adjective skillful. mix of styles is good so if the dj only plays one then i would opt for 3 2hr sets. when neuromotor is in town he can do the whole party for all i care           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

SF peeps, notice that Surrender doesn't even propose sets that are less that 1.5 hours!! hint hint!! I think 2 hour sets in indoor parties is the best for variety and for allowing the dj enough time to express there style. for outdoor, longer parties- longer sets might be better
good question though...

well, it could be that If artists start writing tracks that are really fat, but 2 minutes long, then an hour set would be quite intellectually demanding for the dj. this could be a solution. I have also noticed that when I listen to blue grass, time actuallly slow down to almost a standstill, so maybe if we dj this type of music, the party will not only feel longer, but be longer

3 hours is too long for a DJ to be up there. If you happen not to like the DJ -- a 3 hour set will run the party for you. And I don't think a DJ will have a hard time "expressing" themselves in 2 hours… If a DJ can’t express themselves in 2 hours, I don’t think the DJ knows what they are trying to express. A 2 hour set also means over the course of the night, more DJs will be able to play, which is always nice.           my cat is deathly afraid of aluminum foil

3hours is a little long in my opinon too. After 2 hours of playing my back is usually killing me, and that in turn affects the quality of my mixes and what i put into it.
Sets over an hour are nice but also can be unbearable if your listening to a bad dj, so the short set thing at least lets you rotate through quickly
and if there a good dj, you should still be able to create a vision in an hour. Everytime i play i have a vision in mind for my set going from one place to another. It doesnt really matter if the tracks invovled are the newest dancefloor killers, or an underapprecated gem from a year or so ago. If it works it works, and i think a good dj should be able to create such a vision in what ever time you have to work with.

incidently though 1hour tag team sets suck

yeah i was keeping you in mind localsky since you didnt enjoy shanti's set... i thought hmm what its a nightmare for someone.
i think 2 hours are pretty good and should suffice to anyone... unless youre a journey dj that's used to play for much more.

and paradigm, all the dj's are good or they dont play in the first place           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

I do agree to an extent with your ideas Surrender, but sometimes there are djs that aren't the greatest, but due to some sort of social political maneuvering, they manage to be on the lineup.... I know that I am gonna get flamed for this comment, but a 2 or 3 hour set of Kode IV would make me not want to go to the party... The same with KJ... But both of them get booked all over the world... So as to all the dj's being good or they don't play... Maybe that happens where you are at and I applaud you for such, but that isn't always the case here in SF... There are seriously like 30+ djs in the SF bay area, and new ones pop up all the time... So as a dj I greatly appreciate getting long sets, but I would rather give an hour of my set to someone else who wants to play than "hog" the slot time myself... Now the LA party is a first for me to where I am playing the longest set I have played out at all... I am completely looking forward to it! My back isn't going to like me very much after that, but it's totally worth it... I haven't done a full progression set in years....           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

two hours is plenty, but i think i'd have to choose 4 DJ's at 1.5 hours. i like hearing a wide variety of music, and although it pains me when the best dj's set is over, its still nice to have some new air breathed into the party

Doesn't matter how many DJs at the party, IMHO (As long as there are not too many). One professional DJ, frankly, is enough. That way people pay less attention to DJs and more to music and partying. If you have several DJs at the party, they (DJs) should agree between each other on what music to play when. The result: Less egos, more fun for the people.

I don't know, lately I 've found myself seriously considering only those parties, where one DJ dominates, like Goa Gil or Neuromotor. All other parties seem to me like rock concerts and fade away in my memory fairly quickly. I think it has something to do with time that it takes for one DJ to really open the minds of the party goers... Again, it's only my opinion.

i agree with this nikita- the focus should be the overall quality and experience of party and if all the DJs including the main act can agree on the flow that makes for a stellar party with the best intentional flow you can hope for...

i don't go to many parties anymore for the same reason- i attend the gil parties because gil puts out a very clear flow with a very clear intention of the experience he wants to create. everyone knows what the flow will be at a gil party. (some people might not be strong enough to take the entire ride... but the intention and flow is clear and consistent- a great ride in my opin
ion)
in some cases though, more than one main act can produce a killer party - ala the danish mindshare dual main actsin sfbay area last year- that kicked some serious ass!

what i hate is when you have a line up of DJs that don't communicate or even try to share the flow or intention for the night... or worse when they battle with each other for the decks. i hate djs who don't trust the line up and or worse try to steal the decks... or worse say they should get to play because they brought the equipment etc. the focus should always be the quality of the party not the politics between people making the party.

longer sets are better when you've got a prolific dj with the proper sense of flow- if not, best to spread it out, but still- someone needs to pay attention to the overall flow of all the music- and this requires the djs and promoters to have a common intention of the flow for the evening.

bom!

I did write a big answer to this, but really its not going to change anything.

My ideal: 4 Professional DJ's : 1 to start things up, 1 to take us deep into the night, 1 to bring in the morning, and finally 1 daytime glory dj. Keep the flow of the party going and really let each dj express themselves properly.

If there is an International Act, let them express themselves properly (atleast 2 hrs).

Miracles dont happen in an Hour...

P.S. Id love to see KJ for 2 hours....

well IMHO , its easier to go up there and just blast out a PHAT 1 or 2 hour set. cause all you have to do is string together a bunch of killers and fresh tunes... and potently pack you set!

however it takes much more emotion , control, communication and a great sense of story and journey to play out a nice 4 hour set. you cant just get by playin one killer after another, you would have to create somegthing and take the dancing audience on a journey with the music. In goa most sets are a minimum of 3 hours to about 5 hours long. (this is the norm) and monster sets go from 6 - 12 hours or more!!!

aiiiiiight!
