Hi i´ve recently find out that if i layer my kick with a kick which is really low in volume it seems to improve the overall sound.
It seems that the kick with the low volume gives my song that extra subbass that my songs often seem to lack.
Anyone who can confirm this ?
Does an extra kick add more bass to your songs ?

I would be careful with that, your going to end up sucking up all your headroom and causing mud. If your room isn't treated and your not using an analyzer to monitor your bass frequencies then I wouldn't do that. when layering a kick, it usually means taking the body, sub, or highs of a kick and then making another one. As for layering sub bass, that can get muddy fast.

It depends on the bassline and the track too.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

layering is great
the trick is to find why it sounds better
for example one kick have great click and not so good subs , and the other vise versa
so if you think the sub of the new kick is better , HP the first kick and let this one be the subs..
some nice gap in the crossever of the 2 also sounds extra clean and smooth           www.sattelbattle.com

I started with single oscillator kicks, then went to layering, now I am back to single oscillator kicks again (for trance music, still layer for techno stuff).
The thing to pay attention to is, that the two layers must hit at exactly the same time and unless you are using a sample that lacks, bottom end, most (all?) drum synths, spit out an awful lot of bottom end.
I always subtract things down low from Ultrabeat.

great , and then u say trance produced less good then techno
just kidding , its all about the balance ,if its good all throu the spectrum then no need to be extra 'smart' i agree.

regard that , VERY VERY VERY reccomend to use FL sampler for this , and play with the 'pogo' knob (specialy on the sub one)
it makes the hole thing tighter by million.

and another thing , sometimes simply 2 kicks at half volume sounds better then each alone on full volume , so evrything is possible! when it sounds good it sounds good no theory will ever be better then this right here

I just try to tame the subs and make things tighter with compressors and appropriate kick lenght.

Check out some Industrial/EBM music. I know one producer who uses 7 different sounds just for his kick.

Got a sample of his work Chemogen?

Sounds like overkill, but willing to listen!

Yeah best thing I discovered with processing both bass and kick, is that there is almost always wayyy too much sub-bassfrequencies. Cut'em! A nice diagonal "shelf" from 0hz up to 100-140hz           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

That's one of the best things i've learn caming to isra, the bass we look for isn't where we think it is

@conny

Try and lower your kick at 300hz and see how it goes ,i tried the 2 kicks thing but didn't sound tight enough ,then again maybe it's just me

instead of layering the kik why not layer the bass and sidechain just the low part of the bass with kik. this way you will open room for the subs of the kik without loosing the bass with constant eqing (if we have a standart KBBB scheme and if we eq the bass acording to the kik we will eq the rest 2 notes also..., we dont need this, right ). dinamic eqing is really much better. also just download Tsa's kiks and you wont need no layering... just learn to make good layered bass where its subs are sidechained with the kik and you will be amazed how the subs of the kik will pop up without even eqing it...
