Hi all

I'm looking at getting into jazz music... not sure what style of jazz I enjoy, so maybe a few compilations that cover the broad spectrum?

Or some classic jazz albums as well as some quality modern jazz?

Cheers

I would recommend you Friday Night in San Francisco - life recording from 1981 including John Mclaughlin ,Al Di Meola and Paco de Lucia..ok it is a bit flamenco though but with Al and John you find two of the biggest soulsin the old and new modern fusion experimental acid and anything else jazz area and Paco is a legendary Flamenco living legend on its own.

There are plenty of good names though but I would recommend :
- Egberto Gizmonti (14 string guitar deepness)
- Mahavishnu Orchestra (acid samadhi jazz to me)
- John Mclaughlin ( check his mahavishnu John Mclaughlin releases..or shakti)
- Jan Garbarek (sax)
- Jonas Hellborg (the psycedelic bassplayer) ..his raf (RAF) project should be suprising for death metal or speeedcore music..it is accoustic jazz at its best.Though should be very rare to get,I onw an original cd for 15 years or so - it is timeless heavy.

well there are countless more.

I saw them a few years ago ^ sounds amazing.

Trilok Gurtu also phantastique

In my opinion best way to get the beauty of this music is to visit a concert in a good accoustic room.By some great artists .

Great suggestions, "42".

For sure, you must start with "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck Quartet.

My favourite is Keith Jarrett, there are a lot of his tunes on youtube (my favourite is "Vignette")
He's a pianist, a usually performs with his trio.

Other stuff not to be missed:
John Coltrane - Afro Blue
John Coltrane - Impressions
Miles Davis - So What
Miles Davis - Flamenco Sketches
Chet Baker - Autumn Leaves
Chick Corea - Spain

Also try Esbjorn Svenson trio, Manu Katche and European Jazz Trio, for newer jazz stuff.

All of that can be found on youtube, I didn't want to spam the topic with 20 links

Cheers

P.S. if you liked some of those artists, let us know, and we'll provide you more info.

these are great recommendations ,the only thing is these is not modern jazz. And many like Davis or Corea or Coltrane (except of his son Ravi) are even not alive..i thin even more.
When it comes to history there are amounts of artists worth an ear.
Return to Forever is a great compilation too and yes these all mentioned spirits are immortal legends.
Great vibes guys.

Horace Silver - In pursuit of the 27th man
(vibraphone goodness.. )

Ornette Coleman - Virgin Beauty
(modern and weird.. i love it.. )

Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch
( "regular" jazz.. )

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
(deep dude... deep... )

Herbie Hancock - The Prisoner (and other albums..)
(nice..)

Ornette Coleman - Freejazz
(maybe not so soothing for everybody.. )

the Futuristic sounds of Sun Ra
(dimmed music.. very chill.. not like
som of that Miles Davis where the trumpet is annoyingly loud... this is maybe an opposite..)

Thelonious Monk - Blue Monk
(semi-'crooked' but brilliant playing.. )

check Eddie Henderson for spaced out fonky space jazz...

For some young blood jazz from New Orleans, check out Garage-a-Trois

Saw them live in New Orleans and was absolutely blown away.

I fail to notice Gerry Mulligan and Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Also, Duke Ellington and Count Basie..
Not to be absent from a jazz collection.

V3NOM I thought you were just a heavy metal kid, never would have guessed you're married! I dig some of the tracks on your suggestion there. My wife played 'At Last' on one of our first nights together. Magical!

I was listening to something on the drive home from LA to SF last night and was thinking of you venturing out into different music which is what I've been doing too, and I thought you might dig it.

Try to get hold of Eraser vs Yojalka's 2nd album called Tarinat. Start with track 3 and go from there. The production is rough, but if you're like me, that won't bother you. Gives it a more real edge, IMO.
You can hear some real musicianship here - some definite jazz touches.

look for material with Gary Husband - on drums (for me the best in drummer artist in the history)He plays it as complicated as nobody else I believe. Also on keyboards he is a supernatural spirit as well.He likes to sample his voice and plays supersonic tempo broken but harmonic in all octaves available like in the same time.
He plays often with John Mclaughlin but with anyone else from the virutosos as well.
