What kind of trance do you prefer, stuff that's innovative and built to be different than anything before it's time, or stuff that takes production and quality to the next level?

I remember some introspective times on the dancefloor, the question was: to try and recreate the amazing music that was coming out of the speakers ...or to try and integrate the feeling of that sound with all the other inspirations to come up with something totally new.

Am inspired by way too many things so am always for innovation, but that's slowly changing with age and realization that there is just "too much" out there, and there are just going to be more distractions as the amount of music makers are growing at such a high rate.

Very broad example...

Inspiration: Goa Trance

Precision.... Full On
Innovation... Suomisaundi

I don't understand why one can't be innovative and have great production?

Anyhow, speaking for my self, I don't care about being innovative.
I just re-create in the studio, sounds I loved so much, yet don't hear today (generally speaking).

Tastes and all that, but some simple sounds from the 90s, still sound a lot more fresh and interesting than some weird IDM like, "chin-stroking-till-it-bleeds" styles full of dissonant madness that sounds unmusical and just down right silly, to me anyway.

There is definitely precision within innovation and vice-versa... but I feel someone who creates, approaches the process with one being chosen before the other.

You're definitely more inclined towards precision Nectarios... and I love your sound for that very reason, it's brought back a great vibe in a futuristic way, which is also type of innovation. On the flipside can see the serious bearded IDM folk not even giving it a chance... only because it's trance music.

Who cares about IDM weirdos though?
They never dance, they just buy cool t-shirts and the latest smartphones and look in the bathroom mirror every 20 minutes to see which angle their beard looks thicker.

boOM!

IDM is one of the most irrelevant and misleading acronyms for sure

Not a big fan of most IDM that's made to be fast though, with rare exception of some Autechre and Squarepusher, more into innovations that have come from it, especially downtempo glitch / glitchop / origami sound.

Without weirdos there is no weird music to push the boundaries, without driven producers there's no growth beyond your own weirdo circle.

Squarepusher, Aphex Twin..etc are brilliant. I was reffering to the psy-trance "IDM" weirdos... You know the ones that like psy-trance that you can't dance to.

Anyhow, enough with joking and pushing personal tastes.

Here's my contribution to the discussion (an example of innovation > precision)

actually it's not innovation, it's just psychedelic trance. The real deal.

I like music that is written with true passion & heart. Even with psy/goa you can tell the difference.

So many of the release today sound like ppl working with samples/tools and crafting sound very well but with no passion. Especially IMO in the progressive & full on scenes. Even maybe some of the forest sounds & neo-Goa/Psy.

There's no more the "wow" factor. When I listen to my fav Ll time classics, I just imagine how amazing it must have felt to create such sonic artworks.

Then some track pops up that's so modern & generic it kills my heart and soul. It sounds so crisp & perfect in many ways, but so sterile it's sickening.

Thanks for the responses everyone, looks like all here posting after Nectarios seems to be putting innovation ahead of precision... interesting! (rubs chin)

There's a very innovative label called Schlabbaduerst Rekkords that wrote some stuff about their sound...

From Schlabbaduerst Rekkords page:

do you have a problem?

Schlabbaduerst-style music making:

1. We dont give a shit about clean sounds, we´re not fucking Toto (ewww...), we´re punk rock!

2. We do care for psychedelic and weird sounds. Strongly.

3. Sometimes we use mastering as a way to destroy the sound even more. We intend to destroy all sonic systems.

4. Sometimes we dont bother to clean the samples. A little extra hiss in the background is just psychedelic. = Yes we are lazy.

5. Bah!

6. Most sounds do have a thought behind, its probably supposed to sound the way it sounds.

7. If you think it doesnt sound right, thats probably what we wanted to achieve.

8. If you think it doesnt sound proper or nice, thats definitely what we wanted to achieve.

9. We dont elaborate, we do what we feel like doing.

10. The lust for destruction can be a creative lust.

11. After destroying, build things up again.

12. Thank you, please come again.

That doesn't sound innovative at all, it sounds like every heavy metal & punk band and their labels side the beginning of those genres and earlier.

It sound like every teenager who sees making noise as an act of rebellion.

I have enjoyed some releases from that label but I've not found them to be particularly innovative. Back in the 90's Sandman was innovative to me and still is, Astral Projection on the other hand to me was very much technical melodic trance with big room sound but sounded/sounds very same same.           Cuntus Maximus.
