After the second watch, yea this is a great movie. Is it a timeless classic or will it create a new cinematic language and influence future movies? Probably not.

It rocks.
I've watched it 4 times and on each one of those I got more things to think about.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

Am I the only one who thought that the entire movie was all in DiCaprio's head, with the team each representing another part of himself (Juno - his morals, thief - his adventurous side, boring dude - his rationality, chemist - his pragmatism, etc). The backstory too hints at this. He said that at a certain point his wife and him stopped acting like it was a dream, but he implanted only in her the need to wake up. His wife keeps telling him to wake up (representing his connection to the real world), and points out he's living in a paranoid delusion that he can't escape.

It is his delusion, since in it, the laws of physics apply to the people, they act normally, and within a set of "real-life" guidelines. I doubt there ever was such a thing as shared dreaming in his life beyond the invention of his catatonic brain. It is just his torn, schizophrenic mind, which he has been living in for ages. His "wife" may or may not have ever really existed, perhaps a co-worker from before his breakdown, or a nurse from the asylum where he's kept.

He never escaped "limbo" - the name he has given to his insanity. His "wife" did, someone who tried to reach out and help him but eventually failed and moved on. He couldn't admit it, so his dream became a nightmare. His "wife" occasionally enters his "dreams" - actually, his way of coping with memories through the veil of his insanity. She tries to "wake him up", trying to get him to snap out of it, but he's too deeply inside. She keeps pushing people out of his lower levels, trying to give him time for clear thought, and he resents her for it, unable to understand that she's trying to help.

... The old man in the end wasn't the Japanese dude, it was a representation of him, unable to let go of the nightmare, wanting to be forever alone in his tortured imagination. When he shoots him, he wakes up on the plane, still in his own world, but having killed the part of him that forced him to be paranoid and stressed, which immediately takes action to set everything right.

He is still in limbo/insane, only now he doesn't care, and does what his "wife" has been asking him as one last mercy - he lets himself enjoy what little he can.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

^ Makes LOTS of sense!!
I had thought about it, but not as "intense" as you did.

After reading that I like even more now.
And I have to watch it again this week!!

I like that approach much more than my instant shallow reflection of it. Thanks for putting that seed in my mind, I will re-watch the movie shortly

The characters were so cliche, I was expecting something way better.

That's because they are not really characters.
