Dear Artists,
Two Questions:
1. When you are remixing another artist’s song (i.e. Dire Straits –Money for nothing [GMS RMX)], do you ask for his permission to rmx it?
2. When you are remixing another artist’s track (i.e. Xerox "Adrenalin Hush (Melicia rmx)" do you ask for his permission to rmx it?

In GMS's case this track was released (under the name 1200 mics - acid for nothing).
But maybe it's a cover, I don't know. |

it's obvious that they took the money for nothing .midi file and imported it to some music creation app..

I wondered that - if they got permission to use it?
I mean the whole riff is taken - and the song is released - they must have had permission.

I'm sure they didn't, not because i know them personally or something like that but because the fee for using the sample would be too high even for GMS

but this licencing thingy, as far as i know... works only in case of a rmx, and not in case of rework for example...
im pretty sure that to remake a track... no permission is needed.

Remix is when the original artist gives the rights (and the files) to another artist to rework with a certain track.
All the others things are just not a remix,Acid for nothing by GMS is not in any case a remix on Dire Straits-Money For Nothing, they just reproduced or copied or taked some elements from the original and putted them in a psychedelic tune.So Acid For Nothing (like many other tracks) is just another psychedelic trance track that was inspired by another song.
If this was a REAL REMIX then it would be called Dire Straits-Money For Nothing (GMS Remix),its not called like that so its not a remix of the original. As simple as that.

By the way also in the psy trance scene lets say that i like Detox take Xerox track Adrenaline Rush listen it to my home and decide that i like some elements from the original but i would like to change some other elemenets.
I go to my studio reproduce (if possible) or just record (if not able to reproduce) the sounds or parts that i like from the original and then add also some other elements and make a track that i name DETOX-Maximum Adrenaline and then i release it on some label. The track will sound a lot like Xerox-Adrenaline Rush but it will not be a remix to that track,it will just sound a lot like it and i dont think that anyone would be able to officially accuse me of anything and take this case to the court, people ofcourse will make fun of me of 'remixing' the track without the original artists permission but thats another thing

Well detox - I am sorry but you are wrong.
Sampling/ remixing without permission is considered copyright infringement. For those of you who are interested in knowing why it is illegal, I have included the name of the case that has set the law for this issue (you can look it up on the internet for more details).
And this leads me to my next question:
Why are artist complaining that the internet is killing their music when in fact they steal (yes I do mean steal) and make a profit off of other artists original ideas.
