I am NOT the crowd

I have my own unique taste in music. I enjoy things in a way that is my own. I am a singular being. So are you. Individuals, each one with his own special likes and dislikes, quirks and habits.

When I go to a party, what I really want is music played for ME. So does everyone else, for that matter. Each DJ comes with his own idea, his own unique creative mind. But somehow, 90% of the DJs sound alike. A lot of the same music can be heard over and over in parties (Astrix, GMS, Tegma, Bitmonx, X-Dream, to name a few of todays most familiar music that's heard at parties).

Why does this happen? Why is each person so unique and special, but somehow we get to hear the same music over and over? Why can you expect certain tracks to played at a party and usually be right?

Buddha Source a while ago surprised me in his set, playing a lot of tracks I didn't expect, and he did wonderful things. Native Radio has some excellent choices. There are a lot of examples to this type of DJ. Why aren't all of the DJs like this?

This is the curse of modern society - the internet especially brings this to a new level, but all of the information from all around the world reaches so many people. People notice certain patterns emerging from this, and they read it and act upon it. And it works. One person isn't predictable. One thousand are.

When a DJ plays tracks that you could easily guess and recognize one after another, the dancefloor usually goes wild. But, this doesn't require a DJ, this requires a stock analyst. This is not art. This is research and marketing.

A DJ should become known for his own taste in music, for his own style, for the special ways in which he does things. This is what makes him special. That's what will make me remember him. If done well, then those are the sets that keep me loving trance music, and opening my mind to new styles and ideas. Those are truely pieces of art. That's what a DJ should be known for - the art of telling his story through the music.

I do not like what everyone else likes. I do not do what everyone else does. I do not respond in the way that everyone else responds. I have my own unique taste in music. I enjoy things in a way that is my own. I am a singular being.

I am not the crowd.

You are not the crowd. You probably agree with me. I'll go to the next party I can get to which brings DJs which have given outstanding sets that I liked which really stood out from the average "day to day" sets. In order to make a set like that, you can not allow yourself to become part of a group (crowd pleasers would be my definition). You, the DJ, are not the crowd. You, the party goer, are not the crowd, and don't want to be treated as such.

We are not the crowd.

Just do your own thing, in your way, and get better and better at it, and trust me, you may not make as much money as some others (*cough*GMS*cough*). But you will be the one that'll leave the impression. And when you go back to play somewhere, you'll have people waiting for YOU, not your music.

I may be right here, or I may just be totally wrong in a bunch of psychedelic induced totally out of touch assumptions and thoughts. Until then, I'll go sit in the darkest corner of my mental asylum, mumbling over and over to myself:
I, am not the crowd. I am NOT the crowd. I am not THE crowd. Iamnotthecrowd, IamnotthecrowdIamnotthecrowdIamnotthecrowd.......           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

i totaly disagree with you on this one, asaf.
you are overlooking one important thing.
taste.
i love those gms hits.
i love almost ALL full on hits.
thats just my taste.
and thats what i want to hear at a party.
and i DONT want the DJ to try out new style that he likes on me...
its all about taste.
i have the "luck" to like what many other ppl like.
so i enjoy myself very much at a good party when the full on starts to kick in.
for me the party is about kicking dust.
dancing like crazy.
listening to special and different music i can and will at home.
at the party i want to be "striked down upon thee with great vengence and furious anger..."
yes.
thats my two cents.

My guess is that you want a DJ that does exactly what he wants to do, in exactly the way he wants to do it, that loves GMS full-on and all those hits but does it with STYLE. Not another DJ that picks his track by reading top10s and puts them in a fairly random order, like way too many DJs do.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

well yes.
you are right about this.
but what can i say ?
when im at that party dancing like crazy, i dont think i will very much feel the diff from this DJ or that DJ, as long as they both make me dance all the time.
sad, but true.
and another thing.
i AM the crowd.
when im dancing like crazy at the dusty dancefloor, join in spirit and connect to the vibe.
that vibe that connects psy ppl all around the globe.
that vibe that make them all look alike.
even if for sure each one is an individual.
all together we are a group.
a group of ppl dancing like crazy at dusty psy dancefloors around the globe.
i AM the crowd.
and DAM proud.

I'm with Wako here. A DJ gets famous by making good parties. Good parties are when the crowd gets back home with the feeling "wow.. I danced so much I'm tired". And not with the feeling of "yea he made some nice refreshments, but I'm here to dance not listen to music".

I agree, but from a different viewpoint:

I am not the crowd.

The crowd is big. The crowd comes because psy is popular. The crowd has MTV tastes. The crowd will not come to a party without live sets. The crowd will not come to party unless foreign acts are playing. The crowd prefers attractive DJs to ugly DJs. The crowd is there for the drugs and not the music. The crowd wants predictable, comfortable music that doesn't surprise them. They want to be able to sing along to every song, just like they do when they listen to the radio.

I want music that kicks my butt. I want music that makes me dance EVEN WHEN I DON'T WANT TO DANCE. Music that lifts me off my feet and shoots me into the dancefloor because it is so crazy and happy. I want to laugh when I dance. I want a few sudden changes, a few musical jokes and twists. I want to NOT know everything that will happen. I want a song to end with me asking everyone around me: "Who WAS that?!".

I want Finland.

well u are just plain and simple looking for the bad things in the crowd.
the bad things are there...
but i connect to the good things.
to the vibe.
that what makes us the "crowd".
yes you too...
who ever you are...
thats what makes ppl around the globe be united no matter the politics.
no matter the color.
nothing matters but the love for the music and dancing.
i AM THAT crowd.
we ALL are.

Nah...I'm just venting a bit.

I guess my key problem is that while "the vibe" and "the unity" and what-have-you may be there, the fact is that, in order to satisfy the crowd, the DJs just don't play very good music, and the little good music they play is repeated to infinity.

I admit, my first post was pretty negative, but what I really meant to say is:

DJs nowadays play for the crowd, but the result is blandification, and once the music at a party is boring, the party isn't worth being at, regardless of the feelings of unity/vibe/connection that exists. After all, the reason a party exists is the music: without the music, there is no party.

yes.
the music is a reason.
but not the only.
i mean, you can hear music at home.
first of all a party is for dancing.
dancing to music.
music you like.
dancing with other ppl that like the same music.
sharing the fun of the music and dancing with those ppl.
all those are reasons for a party.
not only the music.
and you cant say what u say cause that is just making all DJ's the same, and thats not true.
well there are the majority...
but you cant say every dj acts like that.
and all in all its a matter of taste too.
as said before here.
for you the music is boring.
for 90% of the ppl its kicking ass.
thats just an example.
the numbers have no meaning...
