SPITCD017 - HUX FLUX - DIVISION BY ZERO

After the massively hyped "Cryptic Crunch" on Coyote Rec.'s 1999, the scandinavian, so called "trend setter", Dennis Tapper aka Hux Flux is back again to serve us with his xtravagant output one more time, now on Spiral Trax. "Divison by Zero" is the name of his second, highly awaited full length album, which was partially co-produced by Henrik Fietz.
Here's what u get:

1 Numbers
2 Ultrastructure
3 Bitshifter
4 Skurk
5 Artifacts
6 Tabulator
7 Telex 44/Null
8 Numerous Numerics
9 Postpone the Phone

1999 - 2003 is a fucking long time, and u can feel it in the music. its done with dennis' usual attention to the detail and multimooded feelings/sounds. certainly, a person does change himself while time passes and so does the music. the change dennis' sound made, is that it got more modern, u can say even similar to todays most fullon music, but it isnt so obvious as it seems in the first moment. its a step into future even, with different influences and new ideas, but still with the same sick attitudes and wrong things like in the first album.

"everything around us can be represented and understood through numbers". this speech is taken from the movie "Pi" and marks the spot where "numbers" gets going: fast built-up, tense and even morning feeling is what u get straight off. the first, small melody gives it an epic touch imo, which brings that huge smile on your face "yeah, hux flux is back". this first track shows that he has kept his attitudes....this is so twisted and wicked, more structured tho, but surely an innovative piece of psytrance for the brighter side of the day and a perfect LP opener. it pretty reminds me "calculus" (the opener on "cryptic crunch"), because of its structure.

the second track is "ultrastructure" with a jumpy KEBB in dry sound. it starts off with these hux flux sounds we all love and missed so much the last four years. this is wicked shit with rolling percussion and sick sounds flying around your head, makes u stand alone with the groove surrounded by sickness and evil. the synths at around 2.30 give it a nice warm touch, the atmosphere gets lighter and lead into a part with groovy and mechanic percussion. all in all very scando and groovy track, spreading different atmos.

"bitshifter" is _very_ psychedelic. it's bassline is, well they same old shit , but omg, the rest, simply brushes teeth. its a party tune from the beginning til the end, with always changing synthlines and sounds flying around much delayed. at 2.30 theres that funny gargling thing which spreads an epic nightime feeling. "headers, colours". the track is building itself up and down til 4.20, where this wicked huxy melody starts. veeery cool. love it. this track exactly shows how he jumps between moods and feelings. evil ---> sweet and back.

"skurk" starts calm with a voice flying around and a similar bass to "numbers". its definetly a morningtrack, with very psychedelic edges here and there, but without lifting off earth. very average and not so good for my ears. tho i'd enjoy to hear this in a start of a dj set. i enjoy these voices .... they are pretty cool with a trippy sound. also the percussion fits here really good....but all in all....least favourite.

"there's something wrong something worng something wrong". what a nice atmosphere in the beginning...."artifacts" is a trippy daytime tune, with trippy i mean that first little melody at 1.00, really nice, followed by a part creating a floating atmosphere through strange fx and deep sounds. a very warm feeling comes over u, let u make sit down and enjoy the vibes. i like the sixth minute, very strange synths in here, sounds very drunken, for a hot wicked outdoor digg. what a pity it isnt summer yet. hope it'll still be actual then

"tabulator" starts right off, after 40 seconds it gets really wierd and turns back into night. the bass is sat in here and the percussion sharp. this wont let anybody sit down, with the most strangest sounds on the whole album. yes, hux flux is back i love this vox alike synths. very psychedelic track, keeps u interesting for the next loop all the time.check out at 6.30 and u'll understand

the most surprising track is "telex 44/null", progressive KEBB with a shitload of fx work. just listen to it, dont feel like writing anything more bout it could be used as a filler for a kicking psychedelic set, but definetly not a filler in this album. its getting a real mess in the end, be aware

"numerous numerics" --> see track 7 W_I_C_K_E_D ecstatic power for the floor that makes u jump around in the harder manner. when i'm listening to this it gets clear why this is such an excellent album again...its neither a second ride on his old productions nor a poor ripoff of todays existing. its a completely outstanding thing setting a new trademark again. i'd like to hear some more melodic work in this track tho.

yes there were discussions around about the final trax on artist albums lately, and these usually were not the crème de la crème as they are meant to be as final trax. but this is. its a genious track imo, these flutes are really chilling and all the sounds are building a fine web surrounding you like a cocoon. excellent nighttime chillout, very danceable and addicting (the melody.....!!!!!!!) K*LL*R

favourites: erm all except 4

excellent work dennis, henrik, spiral trax and hinge design.

waiting to hear you on the floor baby.

GOD BLESS SWEDEN

anakoluth - sweet review.... for a sweet album.
it seems that lots of people are trying to compare this to cryptic crunch, which shouldnt be done, hux has changed!
but still holds his own for sure.

pretty sure huxflux played some of these at GAIAN MIND Festival in USA june 03, thier set was top notch.

1 perky rollin progressive with intelligent changes and deep programming.
2 heavy pumpin percussions/morning swirly gallop buzzer.
3. early AM twister rolling progressive, thick and deep. super groovy.

4 and 5 dont really ring my phone ... at first listen.
they sound comparable to the rest but dont catch my ear .... 4 sounds clubbish/AM,
5 also is late morning spacer... oh wait theres some neat voice fx in there , it gets going towards the last minute:30

6. though, that is some serious pumping detail with exciting zoom potential.
7. slams it home with a buzzy tech tripout.
8 is a crunchy pumping jam, sure to please the stompers
1,2,3 are great AM groovers, space out, more thickness than most proggys lately.
6,7,8 are serious nighttime rockers.
9 is decent chill.
great little details throughout. many many mouseclicks hehehe. so many swirly scribbly sounds, many fx all perfectly laid out.
its definitely a spiraltrax release... not too crazy like other swede lables.
cant wait to play these out.... need more parties! haha
bom and thanks huxflux

Another victim of the full-on craze. Lovely work but imo completely spoilt by the 'fasionable' jumpy bassline...
Still, a decent album and the old madness is there lurking somewhere...just don't like the tone of it all. Sounds a bit too familiar and play-it-safe.

6/10

His style changed a lot... and I don't like it at all Too progressive... and none of that psychedelic madness that made Hux Flux so unique.

It's good to see artists evloving... but the overall quality of the album is nowhere near Cryptic Crunch which will ALWAYS be remembered... this album will be forgoten in a matter of months...           How am I supposed to hallucinate with all these swirling colors distracting me!

i`m dissappointed..... for me it`s like hux flux lost its hux fluxness.... only the 7 & 8 tracks reminds me of the true hux flux sound. most of the album sounds like 10 thousnd other groups who make trance...
but ... tracks 7 & 8 r fu%&ing great.....           if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

you listen it the false way. dont listen to it with expectations or in memory of the old album...think of it as something totally new and you will love it !
