WOW this is just wrong-dont listen to these fools

What will help your odds on the menu of artist available to any style promoter to choose from is:

1)notoriety
2)popularity
3)can you draw a crowd
4) A large local email list helps too. I've seen shitty djs make a line just because "they have a list"

If you cant do these things then you will most likely be skipped for an artist who has the aforementioned when a bunch of promoters are having council about who to book.

Or you can do what I did. Which goes like:
1) made a mix tape (Spiritual Beings 90min)

2)Slaved for an Israeli promoter who made broken promises of dj slots to me in exchange for promoting her parties (Authentica) I did the promoting but she only ever booked me in the chill-out Funny story-One of the guys from total eclipse once yelled at me for playing too fast in the "Chill-out" I was young and wet behind the ears-my bad-life went on)

3)Hooked up with an emerging idea in Los Angeles which sought to break the mold and bring new life into a growing scene in california (Green Sector)

4) Played the worst slots for at least 3 years just to build my name

5)Hopefully if those slots turn enough heads over time the promoter will be forced to give you a better slot as now you actually can pull a crowd

6)Keep your skill razor sharp or semi sharp (on bad days) and stay consistent because people in the US or EU want the best all the time no room for errors or its too the dogs for you!!! The snobs will eat you for an appetizer!!!

7)Enjoy all the years of your hard work enduring all the criticisms of what you play when you play it, and keeping a high spirit through all of the politics, sit back and wait for the phone to ring... which if you follow those guidelines is sure to happen.

8)Then start worrying about how to jump that level of existence on into the WORLD CUP of djing or playing live at a proper European festival repeating steps 4 & 5 & 6.

Its a labor of love really but if you try hard enough...

you can do eh!!!!

^ dig it sir!

or do what i'm doing and just throw your own events, and build a community from scratch. then after 5-10 years of hardwork and network building, start your own festival and give yourself the best slot.

Seriously. Book yourself.

Who knows best what kind of party they want to attend? You.

8 years ago when I got into attending psy events I convinced myself it was this massive undertaking that I couldn't possibly fathom...

Rent a system. Find a space. Find some DJs. Throw some shit up on facebook and isratrance and go out into the woods and blast it.

It's a huge learning experience and when you do eventually attend a party not as an organizer you will appreciate it SO FUCKING MUCH!!!!            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

^ Personally I have mixed feelings of promoting oneself this way.

I could understand doing it when taking a slot on one's own event's lineup as a "filler" or when there's a no-show or something, on a multi day event, but it seems easy to be a grandstander and I've seen people run events for the purposes of boosting one's status and it didn't work out well for them in the long run. I've also seen those same sort of "social standing" promoters end up half-assing an event because their main focus was elsewhere. (That does seem to tend to not happen as often in this scene as in other scenes, however)

Yeah just like with anything else there are various ways to go about it...not all of them good.

For instance, if I threw a party and it was called "Suck Will's Dickathon" and I played the entire time...that would not be a good way to promote I don't think.

Sometimes though either you don't have an established community or...the parties that are thrown don't appeal to you and you have a choice between hosting events yourself or not having any events to attend.

The focus should indeed be on a great event first and foremost and not the promotion of yourself...but it all works out because a great event is the best promotion of all

If you look at the question closely, you'll see that Chemogen is asking how to get gigs in the US from outside the US. I would think the whole "throw your event" approach presents a heap of problems if he's to be coming from South Africa not just to play but to actually throw an event. It's all about catching the nuances

The biggest issue is the plane ticket. If the plane ticket wasn't so expensive even from Europe, things would be a bit easier. However, it is possible to arrange a tour between multiple cities. If you find a cheap enough ticket or are willing to cover your own flight to the US, I'm sure there would be people willing to have you play a show or two. Hit me up offline or via email and I can possibly help out a bit more.

I am in California from time to time, currently developing live set here, and would also be interested getting to play a show. Genre, lately mostly ambient...
