The term GOA was coined by UK music mags many years ago so it has always been a marketing term. For me it has always been psytrance. The music doesn't come from Goa and never has (with a few minor exceptions). psytrance = goa trance. It is just a name difference ...

I see no problem with such some names...

Like many people (do I think) I have been digging psychedelic Trance initially thanks to compilations like these YSEs or the Goa Head, Pulse, Distance to Goa, Destination Goa among others...

And see today the Specialist I became... LOL

No honnestly, if it's been good for me, then it's good for you people..           .

My take is that the YSE comps seem targeted for non-conissiours of the genre, chance purchases, people surveying music. In the past i've bought collections from "goa" labels (Hypnotic, two producers make the whole "comp"?), other earlier collections like Trance European Express, Trancespotting, Earthdance, etc in search of the sound. Those collections have a completely different sound, even from club trance, scratching my head thinking "what's so trancelike about that?".
Still, not so formulaic.

I also interpret "Goa", in this day and age, to refer to that style of psytrance that has long-running arpeggios and ethnic-flavored samples.

From what i've been told, some of those YSE collections sell rather well. They must have good distribution channels.

Chill people... Goa is just a name after all. Who cares?? YSE does some great compilations nowadays by the way, their artist roster is steadily building: Sonic Cube, Chromosome, Andromeda, Blue Vortex, Herbal Essence (to name some) and their mastering is exemplary (most of the stuff is done by 4CN) So YSE can stay in my book.

"goa" trance is a term that can be used
under many conditions

I will agree with UnderTow here. There never really was GOA trance as a genre but only Psychedelic trance.

I don't understand why all people nowadays describe old-skool psytrance or music that resembles old-skool psytrance as GOA trance.

GOA is a place in India not a genre of music. It was always psychedelic if u ask me.
Don't hope 2 much 4 something cause u may end up getting it...

Goa trance or psyche trance is effectively the same thing but just a different name so not so important.
First of all goa is shorter than psyche... and far more exotic...so try to understand the label that use this world. personnaly I have always used the term goa trance and even when friends of me tried to correct me saying "psychedelic trance" I still kept on saying the same cause I preffer this !!!
it is quicker and far pore "poetic".
Even if the music is not made there and sometime has nothing to deal with the goa place in india, this music is a music of dance /trance parties and it all happenned there originally.I think it is a word far more important that you think in that it differences from all others techno style just by reminding of a place, a way of being, of partying...a way of dreaming and sharing....which can not be found in the name like jungle, hardhouse, psyche trance, hardcore and so on....the name goa trance is warmer than psyche trance and in fact signify far more than psyche trance for the one who is aware !

So yes goa trance is a genre of music !!
for compilations:
goa heads has always released shit
pulse: medium shit
distance to goa: the same
destination goa: you loose time when you listen to them
trance europe express are not goa
so are: transpotting and earth dance.
yse are probably some of the best compilations of goa trance music along with label compilations like, digital structure, dragon fly, tip and so on.
the term goa trance is a marketing name that can help labels to sell more and even sometime does not assure you you will find psyche trance music on the cd.
to find good goa trance music it always have been the same since the beginning: you have to acces to the fresh music created now by the artists, then throw away 50% of the tracks (not good),then throw away another 20 % that are not your style, then if you are lucky on 100 pieces that you got directly from good sources you keep 10/15 tracks that fit you and are groovy, psyche and good productions (and I am gentle !)
at the end only your ear and your heart are the final judge but keep in mind that your judgment is just connect to what you already know!

As Undertow allready said, this is the world of marketing, not the world of music. This means not that this label is stupid, they just know how to sell records. As far as I know, this is the root for a label to exist, but maybe I am wrong. The people who generate the tracklists are well known DJs, mostly from the german psyscene. Dont worry: They know.

who buys a cd and doesn΄t look at the artists??
so who cares if the cd is called Goa something or any other weird names people put on cds!!
people go after track list, and that is the information that cares, the name of the cd itself, in most cases is choosen to atrack the kind of public they want, for example, a comercial trance cd, will always have goa, or full on, or any other of this key words on its title while for example, label with a more hard sound , norturnal , their titles are always something like noctunal this, or dark that, or something similar
soooo who the fuck cares about the cd name??

they sell YSE comps at big german record chains, like WOM for example, they are made for a mass market of non-freaks, who went to a Goa festival once and now they want music to go along.           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

My point exactly. They've just released "Classic Goa Vol. 2". When I see that, as a freak, I would think that "classic" means older and established tracks/artists, i'd expect to see prana and astral projection, etc. Don't forget, "Language is a Virus"; it requires a host and it mutates. So, "Goa Trance" has acquired more meaning due to the historical momentum (mutation). It's beyond the sum of the two parts. You would be led to believe that it refers to that period of time when cross-pollination was happening, in Goa. However "Classic Goa" contains relatively new material. Guess they feel the material is "in the spirit" of the older skool.
